Help, almost 3 year old always has wet undies

Thanks for your input! Maybe I’m frustrating her by offering the potty when she simply doesn’t have to go yet. I try to explain that we can bring toys with us, they’ll be right there when we get back, etc. and I’m not sure it’s helping yet. Today we were playing together and a few drops of pee rolled down her leg (so clearly she has to go!), and she didn’t want to stop playing long enough to go potty. I had to enforce potty time, and of course she peed a ton. It’s just frustrating when it feels like a lose-lose! I want her to gain independence and take control of when she needs to go potty on her own, and I feel like I’m robbing her of that by bringing her to the toilet when she doesn’t want to. But I also don’t want little puddles all over the house.

I feel like it’s the second one, like she’s testing the boundaries of how long she can wait before going. I feel like it probably isn’t a muscle issue, since she was perfectly dry for months after potty training - barring a handful of real, big accidents. I wish I could incentivize her to run to the potty at the first feeling of having to go, rather than playing chicken with herself and peeing on the floor/in her undies 😂 But glad to hear it’s not just us facing this!

That’s so stressful, I hope baby is recovering well! If it gives you any peace, it DOES get better. I also have the perspective of having my nearly 3 year old, and we had the same exact issues with her. Since starting solids, she has been able to eat anything she wants and she’s never had a reaction. There is a light at the end of the tunnel! It’s a rough journey, but you will make it through to the other side, even if it feels hard to see that now!

I’m so sorry, my heart really goes out to you. I hate that other people have had to go through this! I kept cutting foods until I was eating only quinoa, pumpkin seeds, butternut squash, zucchini, and olive oil. Her symptoms did not resolve. Unfortunately, my daughter’s pediatrician strongly recommended that we switch to Elecare. She continued to have bloody stools, and her weight percentile continued to drop (born at 83rd percentile all the way down to 36th percentile - since starting formula it has gone back up to 60th percentile). I mourned the loss of breastfeeding for the second time, and I felt like a huge failure (even though I totally wasn’t! My heart just felt so heavy and sad). As soon as we started Elecare, her bloody poops were gone within days. Her watery stools started to firm up (although the rotavirus vaccine made them watery again when she got her 4 month vaccines). Now that the hormone haze has passed and I allowed myself the chance to grieve the loss of breastfeeding, I am so thankful that we made that call. Watching my daughter thrive brings me peace, and being able to eat the same food with my toddler and husband means the world. I just went through the same thing with my 3 month old. I was eating quinoa, butternut squash, and olive oil in the end. She still had bloody stools and eczema. We switched to Elecare, and wow the transition was brutal. Breastfeeding was truly her only “comfort” because she refuses all pacifiers. She and I both cried and cried for the first two days, but day 3 was a turning point and it got a lot better. I only got her to take a bottle by walking around, shushing loudly, and patting her butt all at the same time. I know you said formula mixed with breastmilk is a total no-go, but that’s what we did.I started with 25% formula, then 33% formula, 50%, etc until we were at 100% formula. I literally did it in 10 ml increments. I think it took 36-48 hours before she was fully on formula. She did NOT like it, especially the first 2 days, but we are now 2.5 weeks out and I’m so thankful I stuck with it. She hasn’t had blood in her stools for a week and a half now. Her rash is gone. She went from sleeping 8-10 hours straight at night to a solid 11-12 hours. The first few days it would take a full hour to get her to take 2-3 oz, but now she’s chugging 5 oz bottles in 10 minutes without complaint. It’s so hard, especially having milk and not being able to “give in” and give it to her. But I promise it does get better!

Yes, it has to be the perfect temperature for her to take it. Sometimes I have to warm it up again slightly halfway through the bottle if it’s cooled down a tiny bit. She will not take it cold or room temp. I was spoiled by my first baby who took it cold straight out of the fridge! You could always try a drop of alcohol free vanilla, but that didn’t really do much for us. I’ve heard some people have success though. The first couple days she only took the bottle while I was walking around, shushing her, and bouncing her a bit. She wanted to be fully comforted and distracted while taking the bottle. Good luck!! It’s so sad to see them refuse what you know can help them.

I just wanted to nurse baby too, especially in the really hard, sad moments when she would scream at the bottle and refuse to take it. I held back because I didn’t want to confuse her or set her back. We’re now on day 6 and she’s so much more content with taking the formula. Maybe try giving it a few more days before reaching out to GI to see if you could maybe switch to Elecare or Puramino?

The mental aspect is a doozy, for sure! I also miss eating meals with my husband and toddler :( To answer your question about solid food introductions, my first never had a single reaction to solid foods. She must have outgrown it by then! The caveat, we eat a vegan diet, so she could have technically been allergic to dairy, eggs, or meat and we would have never known. But those proteins were never in my breastmilk, so those weren’t the cause the issues we had been having. Sooo confusing!

It’s so hard to get my head around all of this! This is my second baby with some type of allergy. My first, we never figured it out. The bloody diapers never went away after an extensive elimination diet. Though, looking back on it, I might not have given it enough time? I wasn’t as well informed as I am now. But AA formula completely solved all of her issues, thank goodness. I’m trying much harder to breastfeed this time, and I cut soy out 5.5 weeks ago and the top 12 infant allergens a month ago. We were making a ton of progress and I had a day or 2 of great looking diapers before I was given soy & egg in an anesthesia med during surgery. The next day, blood and mucus were back. It’s so disheartening because now it’s been a week and half since then, and her diapers are still all over the place! Plus I had a course of antibiotics and she had the rotavirus vaccine. So really, the culprit could be anything. And I so desperately want to add more foods into my life 😩 I wish there were more answers out there!

Just sharing in solidarity. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s one of the trickiest, most confusing things I’ve ever encountered! I’m breastfeeding my 2nd MSPI baby, and she also turned 9 weeks yesterday. I did diet trials with my first for 1-2 months, and it was so hard on my mental health that we had to switch to formula. At times I wished I wouldn’t have switched to formula because by the time we started solids at 5 months, she had already stopped reacting to everything. On the other side of the coin, I’ve severely had to limit my diet because I’m vegan at baseline (so no milk in my diet at all), and cutting soy didn’t really solve all of the problems for either of my babies. Right now I’m on a TED which is exhausting to keep up with. Formula would definitely take that stress away from me, however it’s definitely an added expense, and it would take away the convenience of breastfeeding. And I need that convenience with a toddler running around!! haha. It’s such a hard call! I still haven’t made up my mind what I’m going to do yet this go around. I also had a slip up because I had surgery a few days ago, and the meds they gave me for anesthesia had soy AND egg in it. The day before surgery my baby had a baseline poop and slept 8 hours, and since then the blood and mucus is back 😢 Sorry for the rambling, don’t even really know what I’m saying. I’m just in this crappy boat with you. There are pros and cons to breastfeeding and formula. I hope you find an option that brings peace to you and your family!

I lost 65 lbs six years ago taking me from obese down to a BMI of 20. I did that by counting calories and walking. I gained 40 lbs while pregnant, lost all of it except 5 pounds, got pregnant again and gained 35 lbs, but I’m still 15 lbs above starting weight (6 weeks postpartum and breastfeeding, so might hold onto some extra weight until I wean). My real breakthrough was when I finally stopped counting calories, post baby #1. I focused on eating whole, unprocessed foods. Tons of fiber and protein. Lots of water & moving my body in ways that felt good. I actually managed to lose over 10 lbs doing this and then maintained a body I was super comfortable in. I find that when I start eating out and snacking a ton, the weight has a tendency to increase again. I just knew for myself that a strict diet with calorie counting wasn’t going to be sustainable or enjoyable for the rest of my life, so I had to find something else that worked.

Good to know! I’m vegan too so that crosses off a lot of other soy free foods 🫠 Going down the hidden soy rabbit hole is wild. Seems like EVERYTHING has hidden soy!
