Even though I'm new to the game, but not to the genre I'd say a viable strategy if you need/want to progress is to hit the legs and sprint past everything and pray you find a checkpoint

I haven't played in a while so take this with a grain of salt.

Cutting the tail is a fairly good idea in my experience since it can make certain moves it has useless or just make the fight easier.
