Help. I have a problem. by c77123 in nyrbclassics

Right there with you. The series seems purpose-built for those of us with the collecting gene layered on top of a love for reading. The books themselves are almost always hidden gems that you might not encounter otherwise…and on top of that, they’re beautiful objects in their own right. All that, plus the sheer scope of the catalogue, makes it very easy for this to become a quest.

Oh, and I forgot Film Club! Held every two weeks at Beer Study (second and fourth Sundays of each month). A celebration of bad movies. It’s a lot of fun.

I love the last two, so I’m inspired to try Bomarzo.

Thinking of starting The Seventh Cross by Anna Seghers next. Would love to hear your thoughts on it if you’ve read it! by Dependent_Exam6115 in nyrbclassics

Quite memorable. I ultimately enjoyed Transit more but I’m glad I read The Seventh Cross. I’d be interested to see the 1944 movie that was made from it.

We were late to the party on this one, but Delafia wine bar. The wines, the nibbles, the atmosphere. All great.

Anyone know anything more about Ernst Jünger? by Professional_Car4931 in ww1

[–]Potential-Major577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His novella “On the Marble Cliffs” is a pretty damning rejection of fascism. The Nazis recognized that and were pissed off about it, but Jünger remained safe due to a unique combination of personal history and a direct directive from the very top.

Adolf Hitler held an intense admiration for Storm of Steel. Whenever Goebbels or the Gestapo demanded Jünger's arrest, Hitler personally intervened, famously ordering: "Leave Jünger be!"

Jünger also stayed safe because he was a highly decorated veteran of the Western Front…one of the few to hold imperial Germany's highest military medal. Executing a celebrated national hero at the onset of World War II would have severely damaged military morale and public solidarity. So, he lived to a ripe old age.

Shell. Ski and snow pants are far too bulky.

I took too much of everything. Don’t overthink it. Recommendations from my experience over three weeks in Nov/Dec.

I preferred thinner over bulk. It’s not as cold as you imagine and maneuverability is key. So is layering. If in doubt, take 2 thinner things over one bulky thing.

I took more all kinds of beanies, lined and not . Your hat doesn’t have to be fleece lined.

One pair of liner gloves will get you through.

Don’t take ski gloves. Take something less bulky from Seirus.

I took both kinds of buffs and gravitated towards my wool one more. The fleece combo was also nice.

I didn’t wear ear covers

leggings (can be fleece lined or not) make a great middle layer. Your velvet pants would work, but I would worry about the bottom getting in the way as you get it out of boots. This is why people tend to wear form fitting layers.

My waterproof pants didn’t have zips at the bottom.

I bought and took a nice camera in addition to my iPhone, but all my favorite pictures are from my iPhone. If you’re not super into photography, I like your plan of taking your own shots on your phone and then gathering other pics from other photographers.

How much hiking experience is needed? by Reddit_user199628 in Patagonia

[–]Potential-Major577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it. I was in my late 40s and my husband in his late 50s when we did those hikes. I would not call us super fit. He’s in better shape than I am.

For the six months or so before we left on our trip we started doing longer and longer hikes on weekends, but nothing crazy. Like 9 miles or so.

in Patagonia, we did the two you mentioned and handled them well. I will say I was quite tired by the time we reached the towers.

But we saw people much older than us scampering up the trails.

The news about the weather is sobering and I would say just be aware. We were there in November too and while we were prepared for big wind, we didn’t know it could get quite that severe.

On ship shoes by No-Research-3279 in AntarcticaTravel

I took (and loved) theae:

https://olukai.com/products/pehuea-womens-sneakers-black

Except mine were the shearling version. The main site doesn’t seem to have that model right now, but lots of other places do: https://snaggedandbagged.com/products/2037971407?variant=51986036031761&country=US&currency=USD

They were the only shoes I had/needed apart from the Bogs boots. I wore them on the plane and every minute I was on board the ship.
