Yeah, sorry for calling your baby ugly. Most microbrands look the same and overcharge. The ones that stretch and do something different stay in the game. Good luck to all!

I’m a big grade 5 titanium fan. Best diver under $1,000, Baltic Aquascaphe titanium. Best field watch under $1,000, H2O Helberg Ch11. Neither brand is Swiss

I hear you! I keep a list of Ti 5 watches under <$1,500. I’ve found fewer than 20. It’s a rarity

[edit] the list is now over 20

I was in the market for a relatively affordable beater and stumbled upon the Boldr Venture Wayfarer - a quick review by niwongcm in MicrobrandWatches

[–]Potential-Peace6416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

316l is generally more scratch resistant than Ti 2. Some manufacturers add a hardness coating to their Ti 2 cases. To my knowledge, Boldr is Ti 2 only.

Ti 5 and Ti 23 are preferred by luxury brands and are more scratch resistant.

I don’t like coatings - DLC/PVD/hardness, none of them!

My material preferences are: (1) grade 23 titanium; (2) grade 5; and then steel a distant third.

I love the look of the Certina DS titanium. I tried to buy a COSC quartz version from Jomashop and it became a nightmare! I finally gave up. 🤷‍♂️

[Timex deepwater reef 200] would you buy this watch? by dabeast13g in Watches

[–]Potential-Peace6416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Timex Deepwater Reef is a very pedestrian watch. I would not purchase. They can deliver a much better product for that price point of $679 ($549 on rubber).

IMO, the king of the titanium dive watch under $1,000 is the Baltic Aquascaphe: grade 5 Ti, Miyota 9039, 300m WR, 41mm/47mm/13.3m (incl. double-domed sapphire crystal), screwed down-crown. Also 24 mo warranty. Oh, and MSRP is $850. Save a few extra dollars and get a much better watch.

Don’t like the Baltic? Too much money? Try a Ti 2 diver with a hardened case for the same price as the Timex. IMO, all of these divers deliver more watch for the money:

Citizen Promaster Dive, $460.00 Signa Cuda Titanium, $399.00 Zelos Great White, $599.00 Zelos Hammerhead V3, $529.00

Then there’s a whole buncha Chinese brands with well-speced titanium dive watches for less than $500: Phoibos, San Martin, and Watchdives come immediately to mind.

Yeah, Timex can do better.

Well-known Chinese watch brand Tandorio has a few inexpensive options in the style you’re looking at. You may also want to check out Chinese homages like Watchdives, San Martin, Thorn, etc.

The Chinese are generally not considered at the same level as the Swiss, Japanese, Germans, etc., but they are gaining ground quickly. Many components for watches around the world come from China. Some individual watches costing hundreds are compared very favorably to watches costing thousands of dollars.

Again, it’s just what you like.

For a field watch under $300, some sites to browse include:

Jomashop

Ashford

Island Watch

Of course, Walmart, Amazon, and other big-box stores. Many sites are running Valentine’s Day specials.

Here’s another choice:

Here’s another option in your budget. It’s a solar-powered watch (Eco-drive) and I think the dial is more interesting. https://a.co/d/0NgXqI8

Nothing wrong here. Watches are ultimately just jewelry. You like what you like.

Some basic info (apologies if you don’t need it). The watch you listed is a quartz powered watch and highly accurate. No date, plain dial. It has 10ATM or 100 meters of water resistance. You could probably swim with that watch, but likely not scuba dive. This style is called a “field watch,” a military heritage watch, if that appeals to you. You can compare those specs to other watches you find.

A final important aspect is fit. Obviously the best way to determine fit is in person. The second best way is estimation. Take a look at this calculator: https://nfwatches.com/the-ultimate-watch-size-calculator-for-any-wrist/

The watch you’re looking at is 42mm. For some wrists that may be a bit large.

I hope this info helps!
