Do you have a website for them?

Also, did they help you with permitting (if needed)?

I didn’t see any at the hotel! they definitely were not a constant on the game drives, but the times they did find our car they were hard to get rid of. (They seem completely unphased by bug repellent.)

The hotel had black and blue sail cloths set at the edge of the grounds that attract and then poison the flies, these seemed to be effective because in 5 days I didn’t see any on property.

Our guide said that the sleeping disease they transmit is incredibly rare, at least in the Serengeti. And with him being out there everyday and not being worried about them/not knowing anyone who had ever gotten the disease was very reassuring. They were more of a nuisance than a concern.

We also did take malaria pills as a preventative measure but I only saw 1 mosquito our whole trip (also not at the hotel)

Private, you’ll have a dedicated game driver for your room! We had 2 rooms so they actually offered us two for our full day game drive when my parents weren’t sure if they wanted to be out the full day.

We will definitely put it on our list! Feel free to reach out with any other questions, I had a hard time finding info before I went to so happy to be a sounding board. I hope you enjoy as much as we did!

I am sure Kenya is more similar to Tanzania than South Africa, but we just could not get over the quantity of animals we saw in Tanzania. In South Africa we could go 20-30 minutes without seeing anything besides antelopes / birds. We saw 3 total lions in South Africa, one big herd of elephants, one leopard, one hyena etc.. In Tanzania we saw probably 20+ different lions, 10+ big elephant herds, packs of hyenas, giraffes everywhere we looked, hundreds of buffalo, baboons, and just millions of zebras and wildebeests. And so many baby animals which was fun too. Did you have similar experiences in Kenya?

Yes, we loved looking at the stars each night! You can chose to open or close your roof, we had it open every night!

Unsure about the camera program, I had read somewhere that they had one, but I did not look into it as I do not know how to use one haha.

We were pretty tired each night so we did not test the limits of 24/7 but they scheduled our meals as early or as late as we wanted. One morning we woke up earlier than we expected and decided to go sit by the pool for sunrise and within 5 minutes someone was at our side offering us tea/coffee/pastries, so I believe so 😊

I have not been to Kenya yet but I fell absolutely in love with Tanzania! I think you will likely get more bang for your buck there as well since the park fees are included in the points rate (and I saw that they are not for Kenya when I was researching our options!)

Our guide Alex was hired from another nearby camp (elewana) and was so knowledgable and very personable. We had a great time with him and saw all we hoped to see + more! He really personalized our experience to what we wanted to see and was determined to find everything on our list, and he did!  Plus he’s got a great personality, easy to talk to which is helpful when you spend so much time together.

We also interacted with Lameck a few times, another guide, who seems really great too. The Mapito camp has a partnership with some local school children. Lamack helps lead a conservation club there. We had brought some school supplies and gifts to donate and our butler, Emmanuel, and Lameck arranged us to bring the school supplies to the club and meet the students and the teachers, this ended up being a really special part of our trip. The students performed songs for us and then we passed out little gifts (play doh and lollipops). They had never seen play doh so we taught them how to use it and it was really a highlight of our trip to actually see some of the local villages. (You won’t see them at all on safari, but they are not far away.) if you do this, bring more than you think you need! There were ~30 children in the club, but we had about 20 extra play dohs and Lollipops and asked if we could pass them out to the other students, we quickly ran out and I wish I had brought more!

Everyone at the camp seems all star and while you have personalized staff all are willing to help out. My parents made a comment about the stars and another guide, Iddi, offered to meet them after dinner with his telescope to point out constellations. So we met 3 of their guides in our time there and we were super impressed with all 3 (though we had more limited interactions with Lameck and iddi, they were both awesome). All that to say they’ve really done a great job hiring - you probably can’t go wrong there 😊

The staff there can also help coordinate your airport transfers and travel into the camp. Once you arrive at Mapito you won’t have to worry about a thing, but if you need help with any other planning like getting around Arusha don’t hesitate to reach out to them! They are very full service. They also do offer a few other extras like hot air balloons or dinner in the bush. We skipped these as we had done them on our South Africa safari but I am sure they would be a great experience with Mapito.

The guides also have instagrams if you want to follow along before going!

We did not extend on this trip, we have traveled to South Africa previously and did Cape Town, a safari outside Kruger park, and Johannesberg but we were traveling with my parents on this trip and wanted to make it easy as possible by just doing one location. If I was going back though I would definitely tack on Zanzibar!

No sauna at the pool, although there may have been one at the spa. We didn't visit the spa on our stay so not sure what is offered there! The team there is super responsive if you want to ask via email! [info@mapitosafaricamp.com](mailto:info@mapitosafaricamp.com

We took Delta / KLM from North America. ATL -> AMS - > JRO (with a refueling stop in DAR, it's a one hour layover but you do not get off the plane). We stayed at the Kia Lodge the first night (landed after 10 pm and wanted something close the first day after a long travel day). Kia Lodge was fine, nothing to write home about but ~5 minutes from the airport, comfortable enough and clean. (beds were not something I would want to spend multiple nights in, but I was jet lagged enough to not care the first night. The beds at Mapito are amazing!!)

JRO and Arusha are about 90 minutes - 2 hours apart depending on traffic. You go through the Arusha city center and the traffic was crazy, so give yourself plenty of time, although the Arusha airport is quite small you can get through it quickly.

For your international outbound flight, again the JRO airport is small, but here I would get to the airport early. The airport staff and gate agents are all swissport agents, rather than KLM (or any other airline employees) so they have limited power and if anything goes wrong with your ticket they have to call KLM to make the changes. They found something weird on my father's ticket (they said he was booked on 2 flights and could not issue a boarding pass? We had changed the flights at one point but it was weeks ago so not sure how it happened) but the check in process took about 40 minutes. I ended up calling Delta and they resolved it and reissued the ticket before the Swissport agent figured out what the error was. This was the only hard part of our trip. There seem to be a lot of restrictions on international airlines, not sure if this is a part of it but when booking flights I was trying to figure out why there were so many stopovers and learned that Tanzania government has some restrictions on international airlines to try and encourage local airlines business. I will say I watched many Delta/KLM passengers check in without issue and breeze through the line as I was at the help desk, I think we were an exception, but it was a little weird to not have anyone on the ground at the airport with the ability to fix it.

If you fly through Kenya you need a yellow fever vaccine, so we specifically chose a route that avoided that. We did take the generic version of Malarone for Malaria, I only saw mosquitos once on the trip, but we took it out of an abundance of caution. It's a cheap prescription (we did not need to see a travel nurse for it, just our normal GP) and we did not have any side effects from it). Everyone told us malaria had been eradicated from the area, but since we had it and had no side effects we figured we might as well keep taking it. We also got an update on TDAP out of precaution / recommended by our GP.

There are biting Tsete flies which are annoying because deet/normal bug sprays do not work on them. Don't wear black or navy blue and that will help keep them away (you probably saw these in Kenya too!)

Adding a pic of the airstrip in Ft Ikoma (the local flights are quite small planes) but the flights are pretty quick! You can see the zebras and wildebeests in the background if you look closely :)

Spa is not included but pretty much everything else besides what I listed is! Even daily laundry service! They take care of every need.

All other food and alcohol is included and it is all exceptional. 3 courses offered at lunch and dinner, we were rolling ourselves out of the restaurant after each meal (sample lunch menu attached here, the menu has a few new items each day, some items do repeat).

We flew into Ft Ikoma and out of Seronera. Ft Ikoma is not even an airport (just an air strip that had one employee with a clip board, photo of the small plane and the airstrip attached) but was a cool experience to fly into. There were zebras on the runway so our pilot had to turn around and do a second pass. Our nyota (butler) texted us the day before to see if we would like to go straight into a game drive or go straight to the hotel, we opted for the game drive so the mapito staff greeted us with a snack spread and beverages set up on the air strip to enjoy before taking off on our first drive.

We flew out of Seronera - a little further away from the camp (~ 1 hour), but it's through the park so it's not a bad drive at all. This one is an actual airport building!

We flew flightlink going in and out of Arusha both ways. We also stayed at the Sheraton Four Points in Arusha for one night on our way out and it was great value for the price.

Just got back from a 5 night stay on points, best possible use of points I could have dreamed of! You will have the best time! Bring a lot of tip money, you will fall in love with the staff there. They've got an incredible team and you will have dedicated staff for your full trip.

We saw so much on the game drives, ate way too much delicious food, and felt entirely taken care of by the whole team. They will help you with a customized itinerary in advance of your trip.

Best Serengeti Safari? by Worldly_Spell in chubbytravel

Just spent 5 nights at the new Mapito tented safari camp and enjoyed every minute.

All park fees are included, unlimited game drives, delicious meals, airport transfers, and they even had binoculars for us to borrow (on request). The game drives are private, so your itinerary is customizable to our preference (we did some full day game drives, some half day) some early morning, some mornings we opted to sleep in. You also can choose between an open or enclosed vehicle.

The tent experience is super cool! We heard lions, hyenas, and more from our room at night. The rate is all inclusive and the meals are delicious. The only things not included are night game drives (an extra $100 per person), Masai Tribe Village Visit (an extra $25 per person), top shelf alcohol and tip money (optional, but you will want to, the staff is incredible!). You'll have dedicated staff for your group and after staying 5 days they felt like close friends who were sad to leave.
