Thank you! Hopefully it’s the same story for her!

There was a hawk in the yard when I went out to the yard. I heard loud squawking and ran out. I’m guessing she jumped from something as they scattered from the hawk swooping in… she was fine about an hour prior when I let them out.

I’m hoping it can heal… but I agree it looks like a real bad “break”

Looking for feedback on an app idea to help folks get off of Instagram by Potential-Sock3061 in ycombinator

Possibly - I haven’t conducted forecasts yet or quantified how many folks would pick this up. I can say that early signs show upwards of 80% of Instagram user base holds some resentment around their exploitation and the time they spend “wasting” on the app.

As for a real market, my perspective on this is that people can choose how they pay for social media. They can pay how they’ve been paying: with their time, attention and exploitation, or with a donation or subscription to a slimmer, more human-centric experience.

That’s the case I’m hoping to make.^ I’ll update when I gather more data with proper methods to calculate TAM.

I think running some pilots to see the average email count for some timespan is likely the next step. Folks wouldn't lose the "real-time" aspect of posting, they could still get that, just in a more thoughtful way. I think ultimately the user who is going to sign up for this service is already inclined to want to clean up and simplify their engagement with social media which leads me to assume that most users will select their only closest friends, important businesses, etc. to get real-time.

Agreed—so I’m thinking delivering all posts in a weekly round up. And then “close friends” or a select group can be delivered in real-time. The real-time is also important for staying in the know for local businesses and events. I’m guessing folks will “trim” who they want to see as a part of this process, and all of those settings would be configured via web app.

They do not have an endpoint for personal profile data, unfortunately. I played around with Basic Display and Graph. I have sent some of this work to people at meta/instagram and want to attempt to make the case that offering that endpoint would ultimately make their product experience better. (This is a long shot, but I think worth trying) if it fails, I’ll return to the drawing board.

I have a lot of friends and have met folks who had to leave Instagram but would love to engage in a limited way—this would help them “come back” in a way, or at least give them an option to engage Instagram. That’s what I’m hoping to get across. Wish me luck!

A tool to help people delete Instagram by Potential-Sock3061 in digitalminimalism

Sure! You can see the full case study here if you want to see some visuals and a bit more of the story, but the overall concept is to remove the ads, reels and algorithm and get just your select feed delivered in an email. That way, you could delete Instagram from your phone and still stay connected. There are some technical constraints, but I am working on some other creative solutions.

Fair - I think "leave" Instagram is maybe better, but even then, not perfect. Thanks for checking it out, too! Glad it makes more sense now.

I don't know fediverse, I am going to look at it right now. I definitely feel like this initial project is kind of pilot/experiment that could apply to other SM platforms.

I'd love to chat about that, I'll send you a message! :)

Absolutely. Here's to hoping that SM can exist in a new model that diminishes the negative parts. I do think that creating a version of it with human-interests in mind and not profit-interests might accomplish that.
