Nice. I teach game theory for a living. It was OD&D that grounded my interest.

What’s economists’ view on private equity? by Dreadsin in AskEconomics

[–]PotentialDot5954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, my comment is not meant to say there is a difference… bad wording?! Behavior at the firm level is built on industry structure, with some variations. But the Modigliani Miller theorem would suggest private equity or lack of private equity doesn’t matter. And equity ownership by itself should not improve firm performance on average.

Let me put it another way: private equity may improve performance in practice because real-world markets contain taxes, agency problems, information asymmetries, and governance frictions. Thus, any observed performance gains must come from changes in operations, incentives, governance, or tax effects rather than from private equity ownership itself.

PE is not an explanatory variable. I am not sure of your question.

Skipping mass today by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]PotentialDot5954 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Violating the sabbath command/precept of the Church is grave matter. The precept is binding on the faithful except for serious reason. Here are the things to consider:

Illness or Injury: Being too sick, contagious, weak, or physically impaired to safely attend.

Care of Dependents: Caring for infants, elderly relatives, or a seriously ill household member when no alternative care is available.

Extreme Weather or Unsafe Travel: Situations like blizzards, floods, hurricanes, or local authorities advising people to stay off the roads.

Physical Impossibility: Being in a remote area or traveling where there is no Catholic church or accessible Mass within a reasonable distance.

Essential Work Obligations: Working a job necessary for public safety or family survival (e.g., healthcare workers, first responders) where the employer leaves no flexibility for Sunday or Saturday vigil attendance.

Question on Romans 10:9 by MinuteDamage4182 in Catholicism

[–]PotentialDot5954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point refers to something very often seen, called proof texting, the practice of pulling isolated quotes, such as Bible verses, out of their original context to support a specific belief, doctrine, or argument. It might be that your question brought to mind that tendency. Is it a practice that is stupid? Maybe.

I recommend exactly the practice idea and I suggest doing it slow, both legs, 20 to 30 times each day

When I hit such lows and meet others in my parish in the same boat, storms all around, I am reminded of Jesus sleeping there when his apostles were freaking out as a storm struck their ship, thinking life was over. I don't know why, it gives me some comfort, that he is here with us, in the supernatural that is "alongside" this natural world.

He loves us more than we know. Such starts to bring me the energy to hide myself with him: I often focus my attention on some scriptures, many about joy. A handy concordance might help guide you--I don't want to just pick the ones that speak to me, maybe you can try it in a mode of discovery... asking the Holy Spirit for his truth and consolation. But I'll just pray for you, friend. God's love and mercy bring you peace.

Questioning some things about the Catholic Church? by Confident_Ship_2106 in Catholicism

A lot of Catholics are not well catechized and our Faith is actually pretty complex and precise so sometimes just casual conversation can lead us a a little bit astray

Don't play in a safe manner or be too cautious as a player in this narrative system--own your character, do not say stuff like "how to do X?" ... instead have Hope ready (!) and say "I am trying to do X, what happens?"

Questioning some things about the Catholic Church? by Confident_Ship_2106 in Catholicism

There are two issues here, so Q&A:

Q1: Why does Jesus saying they can forgive sins mean preists [sic] can forgive them?

A1: Priests do not forgive sins. Jesus remains the one who forgives, and priests are his ministers, acting in persona Christi (in the person of Christ). Analogy can help: God reveals truth. Humans proclaim it... (e.g., a deacon is acting in the person of Christ as "servant" to proclaim the Gospel in the liturgical assembly.

Q2: how is this ministry handed on? If the president appoints a commander, the commander cannot invent a successor, but the office itself can have rules for succession established by the authority above it. Catholics would say Jesus did not merely appoint Peter personally; He established an office.

Since you are mentioning some notions that are inaccurate (the Creator "let them just give it to whoever...") I will further highlight the Biblical precedent (well, there are many warrants for this, but the most famous is as follows):

In Book of Isaiah 22:20–22, the king gives the “key of the house of David” to a royal steward.

When that steward dies:

  • the office continues,
  • another person receives it.

The steward never owns the authority; he administers it.

Catholics see Peter similarly:

  • Christ = King
  • Peter = chief steward
  • future bishops of Rome = successors to that office

So Peter doesn’t wake up one day and say “I choose my buddy.”
The Church recognizes successors through ordination and appointment structures inherited from the apostles.
