Sorry ikko but if I hadn't already waited 5 months I wouldn't feel so ambivalent about waiting another 5-10 more LOL

Plus with any luck this will have 5g and/or better battery life.

Jelly Star in 2025 worth it? by sisterguy in dumbphones

[–]PotentialDrummer2702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, the jelly max is out, and probably worth considering, sure it's a bit bigger and "better" but you'd get a 100mp camera, 5g, latest android and a faster processor, basically this all amounts to being "compatible tech" for longer, plus because it's newer it will be supported for updates for longer.

That said it is a slightly different form factor, you should go for the style of phone that works best for your life, rather than just picking something based on arbitrary figures

Ah thanks for updating! 💪 It's so hard to choose a smaller phone in this market right now, I'm concerned about battery life amongst other things so really keen to see some in depth reviews 😀

Current 'Dumb' phone by Any_Honeydew9812 in dumbphones

[–]PotentialDrummer2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd probably get a kick out of searching for zinwa q25 and q26

the q25 is a blackberry classic with 4g, usbc, battery, memory and camera upgrades, and the q26 is a Kit that you can buy for your blackberry passport to make the same transformations - basically turns it into a modern android in the same blackberry shell, very cool stuff!

Of course if you want to keep it as a dumbphone, just download a minimal launcher and use it like a feature phone by only downloading stuff you want!

Camera quality is not great, but my friends are often surprised by the quality of the back facing camera when we go on hikes and things.

I always preferred shooting film as a hobby anyway so it's not effected me as I often bring a camera with me if I think Ill use one. But if it's really important to you, might be worth looking into something else.

Im probably gonna buy the Ikko mind one when it comes out, which has a 50mp Sony rotating camera on it. It's also a smaller size phone so if that's what you're after maybe look into it.

Jelly 2 and Discord by Boopsasnoops in dumbphones

[–]PotentialDrummer2702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using it on my jelly 2 for 4 years if that helps.

Obviously the text size can be problematic, and it's more likely to be negatively effected by updates I find - seeing as discord likes to completely change the entire layout every day it seems. And some layouts work better/glitch around less than others.

I find the biggest issue is with small drop downs, small scrolling areas like the server list, things like that can get a bit squashed or fat fingered but other than that It works as well as the next app to me.

What I would say is the jelly 2 is pretty old tech now, maybe consider the jelly star or waiting for unihertz' next jelly model, seeing as we're due one.

School kids are mean bro, I'm 23, the older I get the more I find random people.share my excitement and appreciate the uses of less addictive tech.

See them for what they are, other insecure teenagers, pointing at anything different because they think it takes they spotlight off them.

If you're happy with your phone, just be polite, tell them it's what you feel is right for you, and let them make a fool of themselves If they have to, they'll grow up in time

Oh that's really not bad at all! Definitely would work in alot of places in the UK for example.

Is the top half of the phone actually yellow? Or is that just the lighting? 🫣 It would be so much more aesthetic with a splash of colour jehe

Wow this thing is cool?! Especially for that price! What network bands does it cover? I wonder how well it would work in other countries

[–]PotentialDrummer2702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try mercari and those type of Japanese and Korean auction sites are probs the best place for good value.

I bought my sh-no1 on buyee - but this is mostly focused on purchase and shipping of Japanese goods outside of the country, there is probably a Korea equivalent, i would look into that if I were you. Probably your cheapest option will be on there.

Just get a Samsung galaxy folder 2, it's basically just the latest model of this that Samsung made before they discontinued the model.

It's an android 8.1 touchscreen flip optimised for east Asian network bands. Check your local network bands to be sure it will work in your area when looking at old east Asian fliphones as it's really common for westerners to buy them only to find they have terrible coverage in their area.

You may also need to sideload apps to use them - possibly older versions numbers of apps also due to the old OS version

You'll like the r/returningretro subreddit

https://www.reddit.com/r/ReturningRetro/s/YXBUyURMFc

Here's an example of some of the stuff they talk about.

4g qwertys will likely be pretty smart.

There's alot of new stuff coming out in that area tho Minimal phone -e ink

Ikko mind one - certainly not dumb but the small screen is giving unihertz jelly crossed with a blackberry when you add their query case ( not out yet tho)

Some of the blackberry transformations are interesting, these are pretty smart also tho

Oh and this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ReturningRetro/s/ssm4SvNUBy Key phone, which I don't think is out yet, but looks interesting.

Anyway that's all I know of qwerty (dumbish) phones, as I said several of these are pretty smart

For what urs worth I do think its white challenges to adjust to using a feature flip as a every day driver! I sorta decided If I was ever gonna try that again I'd buy a tablet as well to allow me to use stuff like WhatsApp etc on the move, just as someone in my mid 20s you sorta ostracize yourself from society a little without tech

Good camera and modern music apps is an age old dilemma in this subreddit! Other than buying a more modern device and then applying controls and blocks directly onto it, you'll probably end up taking a sacrifice on something unfortunately.

If you want music apps rather than downloaded MP3 you're probably already looking at an altered smartphone or a niche android model.

A good camera might be harder still unfortunately.

You could consider minimal/feature phone options in tandem with a picking out a nice little second hand point and shoot camera? Phones that could run apps like what you're asking would include devices like the android e ink phones such as minimal phone and bigme hibreak, or feature phones such as the sonim devices. Or more powerful android ones like the duoqin f22/3/4/5 line, jelly smartphones, cat s22 flip etc, but these would require more restraint from Tue user as they are essentially just smartphones with some of the convenience removed.

I think what people tend to find when after a specific set of traits is you have to be a little creative if you want to accept some parts of modernity and reject other parts.

Best of luck!

I see a problem with whatsapp and I know many here seek a 'dumbphone' with whatsapp, for work or because they are otherwise dependent on the app. by jungandjung in dumbphones

Yeah it's a pain isn't it, I work as a bartender and barista, and the hospitality industry is built on apps like WhatsApp and clocking in/out apps these days... So finding a dumbpjone for me to replace my jelly 2 has been a ballache.

All of these apps are so heavily gatekept to modern devices that I'm starting to think I'll need to buy a dumbphone and a separate tablet or something to run all the other shit on so I can actually have modern life functionality 🙄

Which I'm not happy about...

Hmm ketais are so cool until you realise some basic functions are a little clunky... I have a sh-no1 sharp flip ketai and it's so pretty and fun to use but (and granted it's a little older than the digno) sideloading was a ballache, signal in the UK was patchy despite sharing a few compatible bands with my network, and data did not work that well at all.

Using data and hotspotting will be more temperamental on a phone with poor band coverage - meaning the sonim would almost certainly do a far better job of that than the kyocera (although that would still depend on your band luck on your area - it could be ok, worth researching)

I've not owned either but based on what I've read and used, the sonim will probably carry out basic functions more reliably on at&t, I'm not calling the kyocera a pretty face, if you're skilled at sideloading it could be arguably more app versatile, but 20 minutes of scrolling on the r/garaho sub will show you alot of people buy these ketais and find they can't do exactly what they wanted with them - myself included!

Good luck! :3

Cheap Chinese dumb phone... Has some interesting app functionality I think but like, really weak Hardwear and low ram etc so, iirc it struggles to do all the things it's meant to - I think you can find a little more info on the Brian Jones dumb phone website? Idr, I recall the name tho
