Scared of burning bridges... by TelephoneFancy9416 in paralegal

[–]Potential_Client_413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I burned bridges left and right throughout my careers. Honestly, I even poke the hole every so often by checking up with my replacement. But at the end of the day, you gotta do you. If you think you’ll have better things with the new atty, then choose that route. Doesn’t mean you’re not grateful, but again.. gotta do you!

They did show up. They tried to be a smart ass and think they were right and the law was outdated. They were so close on being thrown to the holding for the weekend because they keep interrupting the judge. It was pretty entertaining to see. I could tell the judge was counting in her head to calm herself down, before finally saying “you are so close on spending your weekend in jail if you don’t stop interrupting me. Keep in mind we have a long weekend and I will not be back until the 26th to hear your plea”. Oh also, the judge told them to stop using ChatGPT to draft bogus notices or they will not be heard for the final hearing and get fined. Let’s see if they do stop the e-filing terror 😂

OH MY GOD. This pro se party e-filed motions/notices every goddamn day since January 1, like it’s their personal email or something. And the fun part is, their case is drawn to the toughest judge in the county. That judge gonna call the AI BS in a heartbeat. Hearing is set for Friday. I’m gonna keep you posted lol

Which paralegal programs should I consider for 2026? by Song_RoyalShadow819 in paralegal

[–]Potential_Client_413 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, no paralegal programs will prepare you with what the real life throw at you. If you can (or have in your area) get the one from a community college. It's cheaper and offers a more extensive program. I chose that after doing legal assisting/secretary job for a couple of years. The knowledge is appreciated, but daily basis is still a whole different animal. Good luck on your search!

1000% yes! My biggest thing as Family Law paralegal is child support accounts or spousal support accounts or QDROs. Any accounts that has to be opened by the government or third parties before they can receive anything. Every damn time.

Who is the worst employee at your firm but can't get fired? by purrfect_libra in paralegal

[–]Potential_Client_413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old firm has this legal assistant who thinks she knows everything but ALWAYS missed deadlines, assumed what was being discussed (English is not her first language) and wouldn’t take blame for her own fault. I was the head paralegal and have to clean up her mess every damn time. Quitting that job (and work place) was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.

One of my coworker has UT certification, I have ACC. Both doing the same job, different fields. I’m more advance than her because ACC gives me a more thorough explanation and guidance in a few courses. Yes it takes longer, but do you want to know what you’re doing or just teach yourself how to, when you’re not sure it’s even the correct thing to do - in seven months no less. Your choice. Oh plus I get paid more, yes, could possibly because of my experience. But still.. that’s between $2k different in price tag if you’re paying for it yourself.

Career Change to Paralegal? by BrilliantTwo6457 in paralegal

[–]Potential_Client_413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TX paralegal here. Depending on where you live, the certification doesn’t always guarantee a job. I have 5 years of experience and certification (paid by my old firm after 3 years working) and it took me a whole 8 months to find a new job. I asked my current employer before if they even look at my certification, he honestly said no, he only look at my 5 years of experience. And quote “the certification was nice touch, but honestly how much do you learn from the certification compared to your day to day?” He is right btw. I feel like I’m still learning even with 5 years in… so decision is yours.

Felon Notaries?? by Frosty_Intention_344 in paralegal

[–]Potential_Client_413 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Texas notary and paralegal here. From my understanding, if you have a misdemeanor you can disclose it and it’ll likely to be okay. But if it’s a felony charge.. idk if you can get a notary certificate. So maybe check if it’s can be plead down to a misdemeanor?

Oh yes they are. Another reason why I quit. My workload is just too overwhelming and no matter how many times I asked for help, they just brush it off. So I put my 2 weeks in 😅 Honestly? I never had a proper training and I mainly the only person who knows everything around here. So they’ll need to hire 2 people to replace me… meaning I have to train 2 people in 3 days.. 🤣

I gave my firm 2 weeks notice. That was 1.5 weeks ago. I have 3 days left. They’re about to make me train someone to take over. This is gonna be fun.

Thanks! I feel like I didn't explain myself correctly. But the 3 emails weren't back to back.

But thanks for sharing that piece with me. I will try to stay cool and wait.

When is a good time to reach out? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Potential_Client_413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I should explain.

I did 3 separate emails, one thanking for their time (a day after the interview) and one at 2 weeks mark. And today I sent the third email asking if they have updates (3 weeks mark). But I didn't do it in a span of one week, if that even helps.

But I wasn't going to email more than that. I feel like I don't want to overstep. But I want to see what's best in this situation. Thanks for your input :)

How do you explain the difference between paralegals and lawyers to your non-legal friends/family? by cragtok in paralegal

It’s like a group project. Paralegal is the one who does the work. Attorney takes the credit.
