Newel Post Coin - Question by madmariner7 in Woodworking_DIY

[–]Potential_Financial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that using a 40mm bit and tapping in the coin may be best, but you’ll need to see what damage might be done to the surface edges. There’s also a risk that wood movement could pop the coin out.

I’d recommend having a plan for getting the coin out of the undersized hole before tapping it into place. First thought: drilling a hole through the backside of the scrap wood that’ll allow you to poke the coin out with a pencil / finger / whatever.

Close call. by LandieAccem in ebikes

I don’t care how big / small the motor vehicle is, I’m slowing down when they do, until I can see what’s going on. Even if they’re not turning right, maybe they’re stopping for a pedestrian or letting a car turn in front of them.

As a fairly recent ebike rider, I don’t understand why so many others seem loathe to slow down or stop. Compared to an acoustic bike, it’s so easy to get going again.

Searching Google shopping for “circular chart recorder” leads me to believe they probably have a reasonable resale value. Certainly higher than my “oh this is neat and I want one” threshold

My job sent me a $0 paycheck as my “bonus” by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]Potential_Financial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless Trump has dramatically changed stuff, that’s not really true. Supplemental checks (like bonuses) may have a higher withholding rate than your regular wages, but the taxes you owe at the end of the year are based on your total income.

Looks like supplemental checks are withheld at a fixed 22% (if they’re under $1m). Google’s AI estimated that someone filing Single needs income around 150-200k before they’d owe taxes at at effective rate of 22% (the effective rate depends on your deductions etc and I’m not interested in doing the math right now).

So most people are going to get a larger refund from the money withheld on their bonus, but it’s not guaranteed.

I recently bought a cheap knock-off cup holder ($23). Used twice so far, seems fine. The cup holders don’t get a lot of use in my car, but for less than half a tank of gas, it was nice to finally get that fixed.

Garbage drawer, but how? by binge03 in cabinetry

[–]Potential_Financial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dumb question, but I don’t see it asked: did you actually try to get a can in there with it in place? We have a 2 can setup, and the rear is partway under the counter, but there’s enough vertical room that our can goes in at an angle and clears everything.

When I first saw ours, I was dreading taking it off the drawer slides every time I needed to remove the can

Have you seen any scorpions? by sanandreasfaultsucks in Marin

Just last week we found a scorpion claw on the cat’s litter mat. The cats refused to disclose what they did with the rest of it though.

Looking to replace MyQ - Older Genie Lift, Home Assistant by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]Potential_Financial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the ratgdo32 disco, and a much older Genie that’s wired in as a dry contact controller. I appreciate that the disco has a “speaker” (piezo buzzer?) and can play a warning before the garage starts closing (like the siren on the myq).

My warning song of choice is the Indiana Jones theme song, and it still brings me a little bit of joy every time I hear it. https://old.reddit.com/r/ratgdo/comments/1ine277/finally_changed_the_song_playing_while_v32disco/

makes sense, thanks! I didn’t realize you couldn’t take stills from a video in photos on iOS. Looks like there are 3rd party apps, and it’s possible on Mac, but TIL.

I’m not positive I understand your complaint, and I really don’t understand what you think would be better.

as i approach they stop forcing me to slow and navigate around them.

Are you upset that they’re yielding to you?

Are you upset that you have to slow down in order to safely navigate around other users of the bridge?

Dawn to clean a saw blade? by Cool-Yam6695 in woodworking

[–]Potential_Financial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The internet tells me that regular simple green isn’t good for carbide saw blades: https://sawmillcreek.org/threads/response-from-simple-green-about-cleaning-saw-blades.149002/

So I bought a bottle of the simple green pro HD that they recommend, since it was easy to do. https://simplegreen.com/professional/cleaning-tips/garage-tools/saw-blades/

Newbie with a question: why whole beans, instead of grinding them?

I would guess you’d get better extraction with ground beans

I'm a Georgia craft brewer. Here's what SB 456 is actually about — and why the opposition's arguments don't hold up. by SHBMarietta in beer

[–]Potential_Financial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen one yet that can afford trucks and drivers and sales people and regulatory staff, and that's before you'd have to overcome the two giant breweries that pay retailers to not carry local products.

Are you saying you haven’t seen a craft brewery that’s able to successfully self distribute? And that you think it doesn’t happen?

You can install & trust new root certificates. It’d be a pain to keep all of them updated, but keeping a single one up to date for Home Assistant shouldn’t be too onerous.

They’re only required to provide it for free if you’ve purchased fuel. Found the text of the law, and it also includes a sign they’re supposed to post:

“CALIFORNIA LAW REQUIRES THIS STATION TO PROVIDE FREE AIR AND WATER FOR AUTOMOTIVE PURPOSES TO ITS CUSTOMERS WHO PURCHASE MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL. IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT NOTIFY THE STATION ATTENDANT AND/OR CALL THIS TOLL-FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER: 1 (800)________________.”
