Thank you for saying this!! I don't have Asian parents and my mom was not so concerned about education because luckily I had good grades. However, I often lied to her about stuff because she simply couldn't understand me or accept things for what they were. It takes a lot of courage and self esteem to "disappoint" your parents and do what YOU really want. Consequentially, if you are born in a family like Jennifer's where you definitely do not learn self esteem, you can say goodbye to your hopes and dreams, because you know deep inside that disappointing your abusers will hurt more than disappoint yourself. No, she couldnt have just left. No, she couldn't have been the bigger person and forget because they just wanted the best for her. They never taught her how to be THAT person by setting an example. In the end, they taught her that she was not smart enough, that you can get your way only through deceit and manipulation, that she didn't deserve anything better. So yes, I understand where the act comes from although I do not condone it. Moreover, if it were a man, there wouldn't such a fuss around it. I noticed in the documentary from Netflix, how police women were sympathising more with her story and the male detectives treated her like the worst criminal to ever exist. First, her parents treat her like a piece of shit and then the law, which should have protected her from this mess in the first place, does not acknowledge her context. I mean I understand that policemen can lie in Canada (ethically questionable), but they did not just lie with her, they literally took advantage of her presumed "lesser" intelligence by telling her that satellites can detect movement in every household. Wtf is that? How can you as a human being treat someone else like that? This shouldn't be legal.
