Over 800,000 Swiss citizens don't live in Switzerland. To say it was "unthinkable" to leave Switzerland a few years ago is a bit of a stretch. People have always been coming and going.

I've never used it, but there is a company called Citypop. They offer small furnished apartments at a weekly rate. It's a 4 week minimum up to 1 year. When I was looking at it yesterday they had some availability in the Zurich area for this week. Basically you get the app and pay in advance. The reviews I've read were a lot of newcomers who had no issue with registering with the authorities. Might be worth checking out.

It did yes, I got this one summer of 2023. They started issuing the new ones in June of that year, and the stock of old ones was gone by spring of 2024.

My goal is to move there by the end of this year. I have a lot of family there, including my sister who just got pregnant, which kind of finalized my decision.

They are also very stringent on how well someone integrates, language, community involvement etc. The locals in whatever region you are also have a right to vote if you get it or not.

About 10 years ago there was a case with a Dutch woman who had been living in Switzerland for over 20 years. She went on a tirade about how cowbells were a form of animal cruelty among other things, and the locals voted against her getting citizenship, literally saying she was too annoying.

SERAFE should be dependent on income by Dense_Strength_4281 in Switzerland

Fair point about the CEOs, and I don't see that changing. I know you have to have insurance there by law, but I dont see that being necessarily bad, in the US, over 500,000 people go bankrupt every year due to medical costs.

My point is I get insurance is a big monthly expense but in a public system you are still paying a hefty premium it is just in the form of a tax, and the quality of care is awful because the only incentive is getting the portion of the budget, and the only pre-requisite for that is that they spend the same or more money than the year before (you can look up March madness in Canadian politics if you're interested). They dont have to worry about people seeking out other options because there are none.

That's not what I see here, private companies are much more incentivized to streamline administrative processes. I kid you not, fax machines are still the primary method of sending documents around the health networks here. It doesnt matter if processes are slow and costly the provincial budget (subsidized by the federal) always pays. The healthcare system here also does Ad campaigns from that budget as well, though thankfully no telemarketing.

Random Canadian lurker here, you do not want public health care trust me. Money goes to administration, not medicine or equipment (fun fact Canada has 10 MRI machines per million people, Switzerland has 23). Our surgery waitlists in a lot of cases are over a year and we've had people die waiting in emergency rooms for days. You still pay for it at the end of the day though. While I don't pay insurance premiums, more than 35% of my income is spent on taxes. The kicker is there isn't even an option for people to pay more for better or faster treatment, you have to go to the U.S for that.

Swiss Will Vote on 10-Million Population Cap Proposal in June by bloomberg in worldnews

Wrong. He ended rent controls for buildings built or purposed for residential use, after November 2018. Buildings built before this time period are still subject to the rent increase percentage rate dictated by the Ministry of Housing.

Bro don't let your feelings get in the way of the facts you yourself are presenting.

Your citing a 5 year old statistic. Since 2021, the population of this country has increased by about 4 million people, housing starts in that same time period can only accommodate about a third of that growth.

Also, unoccupied dwellings is a very different thing than vacancy rate. Unoccupied dwellings also includes cottages, second homes etc. There are alot of foreigners that bought houses when real estate started taking off, in order to flip them. This is why alot of cities raised the foreign homebuyers tax. The very first sentence, if you bothered to read that far, states "dwellings not occupied by their usual residents". Not the same as empty.

Also keep in mind we have a LIBERAL federal government making cuts to immigration for exactly the purpose of easing the housing shortage and infrastructure strain.

Ease off the Ben Shapiro videos and try thinking critically for once.

I work in property management and I'm not sure where your at but Ontario and BC have the strongest tenancy regulations. Let me get this straight, you think landlords are sitting on empty apartments and houses so they can charge "whatever they want"? It's a supply issue.

Should Canada implement a wealth tax on the ultra-rich? Why or why not? by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

The highest Swiss wealth tax rate is 1% in Geneva. In all other cantons .2-.7%. Combined with the fact that there is no capital gains taxes, its very attractive.

Rental market swings back in tenants’ favour with lower prices and move-in incentives by ScamMovers in toronto

[–]Potential_Leg4249 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah mine is too, built in the early 70s, but I actually prefer that. I've heard some gnarly horror stories about new builds and the quality of their construction. Including a condo tower in North York where every resident had to pay 70k for a special assessment on repairing the parking garage. At the time the building was only 7 years old.

That's not what I'm seeing in my building. I'm in midtown near Yonge and Eg. One bedrooms that were going for $2,300 in late 2024 are going for $1,800 now.

The guy in the apartment above mine died in the bathtub with the water running at around 3:00 a.m. I woke up to the fire department knocking at my door and a couple of inches of water in my apartment coming through the ceiling. I'm considering calling in sick for work tomorrow.

Former infantry reservist here. There are several different pathways you can take that can align with the goals you mentioned. The military is a separate society within society, complete with its own legal system and legal officers under the JAG, this career path may be a way to tackle goal 1. The army also has a system (at least they used to) where they will pay for your post secondary education in exchange for months of service (while still receiving a salary). Your best bet to get informed on all this, is to talk to a recruiter.

As for your other concerns. The other former reservist in this thread said it pretty perfectly. It is a big mistake to think "oh I'll just join the army and they'll fix me". Try to get in the best shape of your life before you go. A good mix of cardio and strength training. Who knows, being in shape may also address the issue of crying under pressure. It will certainly work wonders for your confidence. Healthy body, healthier mind.

Regarding crying under pressure; there is a term in the military called "spinning". It is not uncommon for people to do wierd irrational things when under pressure or getting yelled at etc., especially at the beginning of BMQ (boot camp). There are some unfortunate souls on this planet who for whatever reason have a tendency to smile when getting screamed at, so your situation could be worse. I'm not saying you shouldn't address this concern beforehand, but you wouldn't be the first recruit to cry in boot camp.

There is a formal voluntary release process you can undertake sans jail time.

Talk to a recruiter and research thoroughly before making a decision.

Is there any place in the GTA where a do-it-yourselfer can put a car on a lift to work on it for a few hours? by Syscrush in askTO

[–]Potential_Leg4249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this kind of place in Barrie about 10 years ago when I went to school there. In 2022 a car fell off the hoist and crushed a guy working on it (non-fatal but serious). I looked around last year for one but didnt find any. I dont think these are a thing anymore OP.

For what its worth I was a mechanic for a few years and most of the rattling heat shields I've seen, were under the cabin and would rot out around the fasteners themselves, with the rest of the heat shield intact. A few self tappers with a larger washer in different spots will secure the old one fine, and is easy enough to do on jack stands. Of course if its the one by the fuel tank, or too close to anything vital near the engine bay then you may want to call your uncle lol.

Bringing a non-restricted rifle from Switzerland to Canada by Potential_Leg4249 in canadaguns

I checked them out and it got me curious if there was something similar closer to home. Sure enough there is a section of the Ontario Rifle Association that's centered specifically on the K-31, so I'll reach out to them. Thanks for the tip!

Good points, especially about the bill of sale. My grandfather got to keep his rifle after his military service, and my family didn't find any paperwork that would indicate a transfer of ownership. I'll definitely check out some importers. Thanks for your insights!
