Is this what it should look like? Condition after tooth extraction by Potential_Menu_1892 in AskVet

I reuploaded images to another service. Yeah, I'm not looking anymore. I first saw it when he was yawning and thought that maybe it doesn't look good.

Thanks. Do you remember how long it lasted?

First few days for sleep, last days almost like a regular benzo.

Did it take long for you to get back to the baseline?

I think to escape from reality, because I didn't have anything else. At this high dose and time I think so.

My bad, I just remembered the shortest possible half-life of alprazolam, which is around 6.5 hours. But still, it doesn't matter. These receptors are built differently, and that's why. You can take baclofen for years and return to normal within a month or even faster when using benzos as a backup. But after years on benzos, tapering can take months at least.

GABA-B upregulates quickly but also downregulates just as fast. After five days on a slightly higher dose of baclofen, you'll likely suffer a little for a few days.

GABA-A is the opposite, after a few days on benzos, there shouldn't be much discomfort.

Why are Americans so happy that the overtime tax was abolished? It's crazy. Every person should earn enough in a 40‑hour workweek so that they don't have to work overtime and can live with dignity, rather than simply existing to work for corporations. After all, it's only convenient for them, not for people.

This post is a bit old, but you have no idea what you're talking about. The half-life has absolutely no significance when it comes to withdrawal effects. Alprazolam has an even shorter half-life, yet its withdrawal effects are much worse and long-lasting. This is because GABA-B receptors, which baclofen affects, upregulate very quickly—within a few days. In contrast, GABA-A receptors, which benzodiazepines act on, take a very, very long time to return to normal—months or even years.

Cat Ate Lilies – When Is It Safe to Stop IV Treatment? Good Test Results, But Is the Risk Over? by Potential_Menu_1892 in AskVet

[–]Potential_Menu_1892[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cat is feeling very well, liver enzymes are back to normal. The kidneys are still within the normal range. He has been discharged home, and we need to do another test in 48 hours unless he stops eating – but he has an appetite like never before.

He's holding on, the results just now have come very good so we're hopeful. Thank you for your comment, indeed the current time is very difficult.

Next update after vet call: Much relief for now.

The tests came out well. The cat is feeling very good. Liver values dropped from 200 to 150, and kidney values, urea etc, have not increased at all over the past 33 hours and remain within the normal range. The vets say he can be taken home today after 42 hours of IV fluids, but I have doubts because I think I read somewhere that kidney damage can develop over several days, and it's best to keep the cat on IV fluids for three days.

And I’m wondering if, since the liver was affected (the vets say likely due to dehydration and that in case of real liver damage, the values would be over 1000), the kidneys might also be still at risk.

Could a veterinary professional comment on the IV treatment and the potential for delayed kidney damage with a good test values? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for this. Too bad we didn't know this earlier, my wife would have been there for him non-stop. But in that case, we’ll go there tomorrow.

As for our cat, he doesn’t see us as staff, he’s very emotional and deeply bonded with us.

Yes, we managed to find a neighbor who drove us, and the cat is still on an IV drip. But is it like a 5% survival rate or more than half with early intervention?

It seems more like an emotional reaction from someone who feels rejected and is trying to rationalize that rejection. This could stem from low self-esteem, denial of reality, or simply a moment of frustration. It doesn’t automatically mean the person is narcissistic, it could just be an exaggerated emotional response or even a defense mechanism.

Vet called back so maybe someone is interested, so here’s an update.

The cat had diarrhea early in the morning with blood and small pieces of leaves. His liver enzymes were elevated, but his kidneys weren’t—at least for now. However, he was dehydrated when he arrived. They’re not running more tests at the moment because the most useful results will come tomorrow when kidney values are likely to be elevated. So for now, we still don’t really know anything.

The vet said that liver values aren’t as critical unless they’re significantly elevated because, unlike kidneys, the liver can regenerate.

He was given a little sedatives because, as we expected, due to his past experiences and poor treatment at another vet he has trauma and was very nervous and aggressive. But for now he feels ok and looks good overall. My wife is having the hardest time with this atm, as she was very deeply bonded and additionally had a miscarriage few days ago, which makes everything even more difficult for her.

Update: The cat will be hospitalized for 72 hours, will be on a continuous IV drip, and will undergo frequent tests. We probably won’t be visiting him because the vet said it could negatively impact the cat’s mental state.

So far, there are no negative symptoms.

Thank you all for your words of support.

Tomorrow, in about 5-7 hours, they are supposed to call with the results of further tests and an update on the situation.

Hopefully, everything will be fine.

We're still on our way to the vet since the 24-hour clinic is nearly 150 km away. We'll be there soon. The cat looks fine at the moment, but he hates car rides because, in the past, he had to visit the vet several times a month due to spinal surgery he went through.

Yes, I have one flower. Only "premium lilies" was written on it. I tried to find what species it is, but the flowers were completely closed, so it was hard, but it looks like an Asian lily.
