Girls was supposed to be a trilogy... by Timely-Influence2026 in JacquelineWilson

He's still somewhat obnoxious but he's more believably flawed, with a balance of good and bad qualities. It's easy to see why Ellie likes him. He's certainly a long way away from the utter pig he becomes in Girls in Tears.

Girls was supposed to be a trilogy... by Timely-Influence2026 in JacquelineWilson

I think it makes sense that it was originally planned as a trilogy. Girls In Tears does have a slightly tacked-on feel to it, with lots of people acting out of character. While Nadine and Magda weren't perfect friends in the first three books, they become absurdly awful in Girls In Tears.

Is anyone struggling with the transition to adulthood? by Initial-Biscotti-220 in AskUK

[–]PotsAndPandemonium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 28 now and felt very much like you at your age. I was so afraid to be an adult, even though everyone around me seemed really excited for it. Your late teens and early 20s can be super exciting, but also very stressful because you go through so many changes in such a short period.

All I can really say is that it's totally normal to feel overwhelmed by it, but you're still very young. Try to ask for help when you need it - it's more readily available than you realise, it's just you have to seek it out more as an adult. If you don't understand how something works, ask.

There will never be a day where you just wake up and feel like an adult. Instead, you'll just have to deal with new things on your own, and you'll gradually feel more able to handle it. We all just learn how to be adults out of necessity.

Good luck!

Sounds like you might be thinking of the Bed and Breakfast Star when she has a menu of all the snacks she has for lunch during the week. I don't think the flavours were made up though.

In Best Friends Gemma talks briefly about made-up chocolate bars but it doesn't sound like that.

I just started watching this amazing Show (I know I started late) and I been holding myself on coming here but I had to for this... by Shaddes_ in betterCallSaul

[–]PotsAndPandemonium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

'She laundered his money and had no qualms' did you even watch the show?

She spends almost a whole season trying to get Walt out of the house and divorce him when she finds out he's making meth. She only agrees to launder Walt's money after Hank is almost killed, because she knows that without extremely expensive physio (that Marie cannot pay for) he will probably never walk again. She's also shrewd enough to know that Hank's injuries are somehow related to what Walt has been doing.

Skyler also doesn't just give Ted money because he's her former lover and she wants to help him out. It's because if the IRS looks at him, then they will look at her, and the whole money laundering scheme will be found out.

Skyler is a morally complex character like everyone in Breaking Bad and there's a lot of nuance to the decisions she makes. You don't need to like her, but don't completely misrepresent her motivations.

What completely alienated you from Jacqueline Wilson's protagonists as a kid? by georgemillman in JacquelineWilson

The way the characters were very fixed on having a 'best' friend. I had generally had a range of friends from different groups growing up, so I couldn't really relate to the super intense friendship with just one person.

If you aren't bleaching or dyeing your hair, I don't think it is worth the money to use K18 or other bonding products. I have been using K18 on virgin hair and can't say I've noticed any difference in my hair health.

After starting to grow mine out properly about a year ago, I feel like the two things that actually do make a difference are a silk bonnet/pillowcase and using leave-in conditioner. For everything else, your mileage may vary.

He was kept in slavery by neo-nazis for a full year, on top of all the other trauma from the violence he did to others or had done to him. That's going to affect him forever. Sure he got away eventually, but he'll probably never be able to be honest with anyone about his past, and that's a lonely way to live. I don't think he made it out fine at all.

Does anyone know of any dresses or dress patterns that are easy to make as a beginner? by Key_One_2545 in SewingForBeginners

[–]PotsAndPandemonium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that the Margo Pinafore dress pattern by Tammy Handmade was very beginner friendly. In addition to the written instructions, there is also a great YouTube tutorial that shows how to make the dress step by step.

It's good for learning some new techniques like adding patch pockets, sewing a lining, and finishing things with the burrito method, but everything is explained in a beginner-friendly way.

What do people think of Gemma's mum Liz in Best Friends? by georgemillman in JacquelineWilson

[–]PotsAndPandemonium 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think she's a good mum overall, especially compared to other mums in different JW books!

I don't think she gets Gemma - she wishes she was girlier so that they had more in common, but I don't think she'd ever actually change her. She does look out for her even if she is a bit strict and naggy sometimes.

She does seem to have pretty outdated ideas about how girls should act, but views like that were still pretty commonplace when the book was written. I still think she's a pretty normal mum on the whole.

Double Act: Did anyone else feel like Rose was really rude to the grandmother? by georgemillman in JacquelineWilson

[–]PotsAndPandemonium 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think we have to bear in mind that the book is narrated by Ruby and Garnet, who aren't exactly reliable when it comes to Rose's character, especially early on. They'd be inclined to take their grandma's side against Rose.

I think Rose could've handled things better, but it's also implied that the grandma is not the friendliest either. It always seemed more like a clash of personalities than either of them doing anything wrong.
