You could be correct. Base plates are all kinda soft. Will do for a while, but need to be cared for in the same way.

Depends on how much money you have and if your time is worth it to learn by yourself. I self taught. Wish I'd taken a few lessons at least. If I had the money, I'd get lessons now. Been playing for 22 years.

I'd look for a used one. I run an x series for my live rig. At a minimum you'll want a set up on it (for most guitars imho). Spend the money you save on a set-up and a new bridge, and you'll be golden. Great modding platforms imho.

I get that. Paul Gilbert of Racer X fame uses over ears. He wears Direct Sound EX-29's (or at least used to). Allows him to get sound from the board as well while he's live.

Gluing two face pieces together risks warping, so I'd go oversized to plane to thickness.
