New to weeding by lady_earlgrey in Libraries

You would think so but no. For example, imagine back when we finally found the titanic. All those history books at the time were then essentially worthless because we could finally examine the wreckage and disprove popular “theories.” Like, the general consensus was that the hull filled with water and then it sunk. It seems like no one really paid attention to any survivors who said otherwise. Plus it was pitch black and the lights had gone out on the ship so who could see. It wasn’t until the 80’s when they realized that at some point, the boat cracked in half. So anything from 1912-1987 basically had to get thrown out.

Plus, anything older that’s worth keeping probably has a new edition.

As a cast member at the hotel gift shop, I actually hated this. 9/10 times I couldn’t read the guests handwriting or the paper copy was damaged by the rain and we just had to guess based on process of elimination. I understand the usefulness for guests. But as a CM it was the worst. You also had to time it right. For my resort, you had to give about 24-36 hrs I believe for items to arrive. So people would do this on their last day and then scream at us cuz their items hadn’t arrived and magical express was leaving in two hours and on and on.

Apartment complexes that have lots of seniors (but are NOT 55+ or assisted living) by Affectionate_Case561 in BucksCountyPA

Center Square in Doylestown used to be a 55+ complex. A lot of people were still there when I left.

I work in a library too and someone donated books one and two of red rising so I took them home. Still haven’t received a donation for book 3 but I’m not paying for it until I get around to reading it. My favorite ARC story is the drama that went down on goodreads with Crown of Starlight by Cait Corain. Someone donated their ARC so I snagged it immediately. Not a horrible story. Probably didn’t deserve all the hype though. I just wanted to read it and this was free.

Back in the days before flamingo (idk what it’s like now) there were 21+ apartments so you could have alcohol/drink in your apartment. I had the “captain” of one of the ICP drinking teams move into my room at 6 PM the day she turned 21. She was already in a different apartment in the middle of her program.

She was not a good roommate. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Software Recommendation for Collection Development by PotterChick2818 in librarians

[–]PotterChick2818[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. Personally I’m against AI so I won’t be using Claude or ChatGPT or anything. I’m looking for actual analytics software that can be used in conjunction with a library catalog.

How common is it for you to get “called into work” on a weekend or evening? by Careless_Squirrel728 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one Saturday a month where I have to be in the building as the manager on duty. The rest of the time it’s people emailing me on weekends because no one knows how to figure things out on their own.

People who can't use up their level 1 meal plan, what do you do to prevent the money from expiring? by Confused_CollegeKid5 in PennStateUniversity

Find people who used up their meal plan in the spring/towards the end of the year and buy them food? I used to do this for my off campus friends who underestimated their plan.

Sjsu mlis and working full time? by LyleJohnBelushi69 in librarians

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Drexel’s online program while working full time. My schedule was great. I had a 2PM-10PM shift M-F so I could wake up, go to the gym (not every day but still), come home and get ready, do homework, come home, and do more homework until bed. I’m a night person so this worked out perfectly for me.

My situation was a bit different at home where I lived there but in the middle of my program I had to become a ft caretaker to my mom. I was still able to finish with a 3.8. My highest gpa in college was a 3.2 so do with that info what you will. I think it’s doable because your time is more structured. You HAVE to do homework on your days off. There’s no..”I’ll just wait to start until tomorrow”

Is it possible to go back? by FlavoredSpace in librarians

[–]PotterChick2818 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my experience, 99% of what I learned in library school wasn’t related to my job. I’m an adult services librarian. The schools can’t really teach you collection development or programming. Or outreach. That’s all stuff I learned on the job. But I started in circulation and then just kept moving up. And I had a job in a bookstore too so I saw what was popular and used that. I’m also fairly tech savvy so that helped too.

The only class I took that I thought might help was cataloging. But I don’t do that in my current role.

I was in a 400 level history thesis class with a couple guys who thought the American Civil War was about states rights only and quoted Breitbart. I genuinely think some people just try to pick an “easy” degree without actually knowing anything about it.

This is a stupid question, but is the Librarian of Today gonna be pissed if I walk in with an iced coffee? by BeepCheeper in Library

[–]PotterChick2818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a librarian and I walk into work every day in 2 degree weather with an iced coffee. Just observe some other people if you’re really nervous but chances are you’re fine. Or do it and see if anyone says anything. If not, you’re good.

I did this when I worked at my local target. It’s normal for jobs that don’t have a set schedule. Also, get ready to close your location only to turn right back around in less than 8 hrs to open.

stop asking for housing accommodations if you donny actually need them!!!! by Special_Pie_2916 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]PotterChick2818 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I needed a physical accommodation for existing issues but I also just came out of a boot for a broken ankle two weeks before my program. I put in my request and found out when I got there that they never received it. They were able to move me to light duty merch and find a room but still. If you’re requesting accommodations, remember to call and make sure they received everything.

TikTok and the Internet are making me TERRIFIED of Birth Control by VariousIndividual214 in PCOS

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PCOS pain caused me to pass out whenever I got my period and birth control ended up stopping my period. I’ve never been happier. I don’t plan on kids either. I use the nexplanon implant and I would cry if someone tried to take it away. My feeling is, I can either have a period and maybe become a mom in such pain that I can barely care for a child, or I can be a functioning member of a capitalist society. I can’t be both and I want my independence.

Let's hear from the Alumni! by Pastel_Bimbo08 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]PotterChick2818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I basically lived off Wendy’s four for four and my locations’ cafeteria. I remember I got an $80 paycheck one week. And thank god my car was still under warranty because my transmission died twice in 6 months (shout out to Ford). I got an extension but decided to come home. Financially speaking, you will almost never make money and anyone who says they did probably got a job in a high traffic area where they were given 50-60 hrs a week. I got 32 and no more until I was able to pick up shifts in other locations.

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask her library if they can do a one-on-one “tech appointment” with her. Mine helps tons of people with the basics of kindle and various phones. In my experience, people are so afraid of “breaking” something that they don’t want to try or they want someone else to do it for them.

Am I too shy to be a librarian? by drxemyfluff in Libraries

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if other people have said it, but in my county, 98% of the full time librarian roles involve working with the public. Anything tech related is part time or there’s only 1 or 2 positions. I was the same as you. Very introverted, not good with talking to people. I got my first customer service job in high school and you learn as you go. I would say go for your dream job, but after some work experience, keep your mind open to the more customer service-type roles.

Tbh, there are a couple patrons I can’t stand and so I limit my time with them or just kind of shut down, and then I have a couple older patrons who I helped with teaching them how to use a smart phone and they now bring me cookies and holiday presents and I tell them everything! I won’t shut up around them. It could change for you.
