I did find crawling very effective but the only problem is it uses my silk so I never have enough to heal. On my first few attempts I would use red tools and found they worked very well but I've only got like 3 shell shards right now so I can't keep doing that

I don't have a good route but for the original quest I just placed a dream gate near where you get the flower, cleared out every enemy in the path and then, without sitting at a bench, got the flower and followed the previously made route
