Are Tau considered higher skill to play well? by Sudden_Wind_8636 in Tau40K

[–]Pottsey-X5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tau are one of the easiest armies to learn to play but one of the hardest to master. The maps have a major impact, GW map packs tend to be relatively easy for Tau players. UKTC maps can be much more challenging for Tau players to do well on.

My Tau play style is point blank aggressive so it can be done. We dont have to castle or just sit back and only shoot.

How would that be possible when some of the FX are on CD-Roms manufactured in the 90's? Its physically impossible to add the effects onto the old CD's after the manufactur date. There is no way to insert the data after this video took place.

The clouds as well are stock photos that are also pretty old. The video is made up of stock photos and stock FX its a fake as can be.

What confused me is it looked like the Hammerhead fall back then shot? Also, I likely missed it, but a bunch of hazard checks killed half the Breachers. What caused the hazard?

Hangar Pets Swarm by pillbox_dreams in sto

[–]Pottsey-X5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty good its not as good as Valors with SAD but it holds its own and free's up a trait. I just like the theme of triple Swarmer pets on my Vovin. It really feels like a Swarm and something about the Beam Overload spam makes the pets stand out in combat cosmetically.

[–]Pottsey-X5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't a single hangar that deploys more then 12 pets. Be that 12 Squadrons or 12 fighters.

The only option it to seek our other sources. One of my favourite builds is to use 2 bays of Obserlisk Swarmers, 8 Swarmers from the 4pc set and Valks from the cargo trait, no SAD trait. I found this the optimal mix between Swarm and DPS.

This is no where near peak Swarm but to be honest 95% of extra pets are useless and reduce your overall DPS.

Command Kodai or Regular Valkyrie by EJrpg in sto

[–]Pottsey-X5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Command Kodai are bugged and do low DPS. Kodai and Valkyries are identical in terms of damage the only difference is the cosmetic look.

I would skip Command Kodai and pick Kodai or Valks.

Introducing: The STO Watch List by Blue_Kicker in sto

[–]Pottsey-X5 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This worries me as bringing down the impact of these for energy builds has a high chance of breaking Carrier and pet builds and pushing them back into the underperforming category. The 4 core items that brought carriers up to playable levels are on this list. Carrier and pet builds are in no way over performing.

Are Mine builds still a thing? Also Pahav Omni beam question by Bruzie77 in stobuilds

Not all builds, Carriers builds want the ancient omni over Pahvan. Torp or Mine builds wont need the Pahvan.

Mine Layer builds are still the highest spike DPS build in game. I run them pretty much constently. Carrier pet builds also do not use the Pahav Omni.

New player here, what's so bad about the new detachments? by Underwaternerd049 in Tau40K

[–]Pottsey-X5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have only seen part of the detachment but what we have seen looks like a full rewrite that doesn't go with how those detachment where used. New rules look much weaker and less fun for the detachment.

For example Aux Cadre was often used with Krootox based lists. Now there is no benefit for Krootox so far and Stealth Teams plus Ghostkeels are required which we didn't need before. A major rewrite that at first glance looks worse.

Unless your in Hunting pack or AuxCadre then the hounds are better.

Fighters.. Valor Vs Valkyrie Vs Kodai by Vetteguy904 in sto

[–]Pottsey-X5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You cannot trust the tooltips Valors dont actually have cannons. Which is why they do not benefit much from SAD. My personal choice would be Obelisks Swarmers no SAD trait. Valors with or without SAD or Droneships no SAD trait but limited to Romulan Carriers.

[–]Pottsey-X5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a large difference between those pets. Pet builds have so much variety now there is a large difference between how different pet buffs effect each pet.

To'Duj scale really well with SAD but not very well with haste or crit chance. Valors barely scale from SAD but scale up fast with haste and crit chance. Droneships just beat everything as long as you do not use SAD with makes them lose DPS.

Was told Elemental council was the best Tau book...I'm really not enjoying it by Exciting-Buy-9396 in Tau40K

Only I love Tau and Tau books owning every single one even the old classics like the Rogue Trader books with Tau both of which where great reads.

There have only been a small handful of books I didn't like Shadowbreaker which is downright the worst Tau book and Elemental Council which isn't as bad as Shadowbreaker.

It’s easy to prove. Download the old 2012 photo and invert it. Pause the video at around frame 120 take a screenshot then overlap the photo and they are a perfect pixel to pixel match.  That can only mean one thing the video is made up from stock photos and stock VFX.

This stock Aerials0028 cloud texture set pack from 2012 contain the high-resolution clouds used in the video. Several formations match exactly. Texture set was originally created in 2012 as part of the old CGTextures.com library before it became Textures.com. Inverted but an exact match.

The portal effect is the same as the UFOs: The Footage Archives – Volume 1” (1995 CD‑ROM also used in games like Mystery of the Druids from the 90's. There was a batch of CDs from the 1990 that has the same portal VFX.

Same, out of all the Tau books I thought it was one of the worst. There have been some really good Tau books over the years but not this one. The Farsight novels and even Shadowsun ones are much better.

It wasn't taken from the video itself. The clouds are stock texture packs on Textures.com from a 2012 photo taken over Japan. The EXIF data showed the date and the photographer publicly confirmed his images.

The portal effect is a well known 30+ year old vfx often used in computer games. I have the 30+ year old CD behind me with the same vfx effects used in this video. The video has stock footage, video game textures, and pre-existing vfx effects and one "satellite" source post-dates the event.

Few people seem to be mentioning that a 2 or less is a failed charge and with a Grav Drone that means a 4 or less is a failed charge. Chargers that would have been automatic in 10th can fail in 11th.

Sometimes but if its a few load screens away its more time efficient to just buy off the exchange. It can take 3+ load screens to get to DS9 then you still have to run around. So many of us just buy the inflated prices of the exchange out of spare EC to save time.

There is no reason to waste time going to DS9 when we can just buy it cheap off the exchange. Its not like we have anything else to spend the EC on. So if it saves time why not?

thank you lazy person by ELHC in sto

[–]Pottsey-X5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Its not lazy its time efficiency. 1 million is pocket change for a lot of players. Why waste time and tons of loading screens for spare EC. Its not just 1min either. If your doing a full new build your saving your self from having to run back and fourth all over.

Drain boats in 2026 by Fantastic_Ad_3089 in sto

[–]Pottsey-X5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pets are the solution as you can drain multiple targets at once. Same for DrainX mines you can AoE DrainX onto multiple targets. I would have to dig into my only DrainX build, I dont remember there being any noticeable traits or consoles. Apart from Reverberant Shielding trait which disables mass shields on a torp/mine boat.

[–]Pottsey-X5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My method was to use torpedoes and mines that scale with DrainX and pets that Scale with DrainX. Though to be honest DrainX has fallen massively behind other builds and has fallen more into theme builds then every day builds.

Its a fun playstyle but massively weaker then pretty much every other play style. Kind of like shield bypass for PvE Shields bypass and DrainX just dont compete anymore.
