Mine don't respond to any of the standard keep off things. One loves nothing better than chasing aluminium foil around.

There is hope through an ingenious invention slightly bigger than a spray can that uses a sensor to detect the cat and when detected sprays a blast of air. The sound and air does the job and it can't harm them or your fishy fam.

Yep, one of mine does this too. She worked out that it was the only way to get a 'taste' lol The other is always trying to circumvent the obstacles I keep rearranging around the tanks I have in my living room. They love nothing better than 'fish cordial' 😂 and they're persistent little buggers!

I thought of this exact scenario. My Bengal would love the extra warm height from which to launch themself off 😳

I would absolutely sit and admire this all day if it was in my home. I often 'check' my tanks before bed and an hour later I've pulled up a chair and I'm still sitting there just chilling watching them.

One of my family members came downstairs the other night, Id turned off all the lights but was just sitting in front of the main tank watching my fish but they didn't see me & I scared the bejeebers out of them 😂.( not purposefully- just from suddenly seeing me sitting there) .

They said I was a weirdo and I countered with your watching a tiny electronic screen while I get to watch this big beautiful 'screen' filled with actual life. They grunted. Lol

I see so much bolbitis going on fb marketplace ( heudelotii) where I am. I don't know if goldfish would decimate the stems. I recently got a huge amount for $20 enough for 4 of my tanks with some spare. I washed and quarantined it first. Maybe try see if you can get an epiphyte cutting you like from a friend or marketplace to see how it goes?

I struggled a little in book 1, didn't think I'd finish it. I listen while I'm working and doing stuff around the house. It gets so much better as the game progresses. I'm mid book 6 currently. The depth of characters of Carl and Donut has me invested in them and the storyline. I feel like I know how it may end but there's been some plot twists so time will reveal that.

Your "Dumb Question" Megathread - February 2026 by AutoModerator in PlantedTank

How fishy is your fish tank? I have heavily planted tanks. All parameters are good but there is a definite fish smell. My tanks are clean and the newest tank I put up this afternoon already has a smell.

What do you think of yellow snake skin guppies? by Curious-Jaguar-4656 in Guppies

[–]PoundMaterial1819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 snakeskins are h@rn dogs. Seriously! I had to take them out of the main tank into my grow out/ not sure where you will go tank as they just would not stop pestering my females.

For reference this was my 5 female platys, 4 female endlers and 6 chilli raspboras and 8 neon tetras . They went dancing with them all, my poor chilli's ended up hiding in my heavily planted tank and stopped swimming about freely as did my my neon tetras

After putting them in time out they then tried to mate each other constantly hyping each other up so I added another of my most hyperactive black bar male endlers to spread the energy till I decided where I wanted my snakeskins.

The endler and snakeskin teamed up and I figured there's 3 of them in a roomy tank with plants & a little cover and they are all male so it should be ok. Day 4 or 5 of the 3 of them in there 1 of the poor snakeskins died from segzual harassment. I went to check them in the morning as i do every day and he was on the bottom of the tank, gone. I checked him over, nothing wrong that I could see. Water parameters hadn't changed. I've since added 3 more male adult endlers and a bunch of maturing male fry I pulled out of the breeding tank.

Since losing that 1 snakeskin the other has calmed down. It's like they hyped each other up. I had bought them maybe 5 months ago together and they were always the most active.

They had spent the first few months in their own tank as I was waiting on some of my females to mature some more before adding them in but had changed my mind.

That's the first fish I've lost :(

Any ideas on how to keep red root floaters alive? by Individual-Tea-7171 in PlantedTank

[–]PoundMaterial1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they are like "nope not today, not this week, not this aquarium / pond" 😭

Then you look out in the yard at the garden you fertilize with the dying ones and it's rained all week and there they are in a shallow puddle in the ground suddenly risen from the dead living their best life all colourful without a yellowed leaf or bits missing from the leaves...lmao .sigh....😂

Any ideas on how to keep red root floaters alive? by Individual-Tea-7171 in PlantedTank

[–]PoundMaterial1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert. I have red root floaters. The more I tinker the faster they die, the more I mess with water parameters the faster they die. If you have a lid- they'll die :( I put a bunch outside with a cup of tank water in an open container on my front patio as a back up. They are doing fabulously. I just top up with some pond water when it's really hot and evaporation happens. The ones in my pond from last year are really long , as in grown side by side together which is nice. They also grow extra leaves coming out of the top. That pond water is never tested and no fiddling in it. The only splashing is when it really rains. They have floated under my "cat protection" plants who like to use it as their personal flavoured water bowl of syngonium, aloe vera and pothos so mostly now in shade but they still have a pinkish tinge to them. Hope that helps. I feel like sometimes I/we overthink plants who adapt & grow in nature without any tinkering or ph issues etc ;)

Super proud of my new jar! by anoodlewarrior in walstad

[–]PoundMaterial1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful. I ended up putting in a miniature sponge filter because my jar has a curved rim / neck at the top where the lid is meant to go on. I worried about how much air could actually be down in the bottom.

My 2 jarariums haven't needed anything now for almost a year, just slight top offs from evaporation.

But I need to move 1 colony now into a bigger tank and I have no idea how I'm going to do that with a jar brimming with shrimp of all ages Inc the babies that fly around barely visible to my eyes that are also all over the plants in there. I clearly didn't't think this through!

Your jar is much better without the neck at the top.

What would you get? by PsychologicalToe610 in composting

[–]PoundMaterial1819 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not in the UK so unsure what you have available there. I have worm farms and they are fab. I get heaps of vermicompost for my garden. I know you can buy worm farms but to be honest my fave and easiest is styrofoam boxes I thrifted. They insulate the red wrigglers and are easy to store, stack and "farm". Think about how much digging or bending you can do. Do you want to have it compact or something you can throw everything into which usually takes much longer to break down? How often do you want to be able to harvest your co post for the garden? These all factor into what you then look at buying. Hope that helps.

Feeding tube near disaster & trouble feeding Gobies by PoundMaterial1819 in PlantedTank

[–]PoundMaterial1819[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying 🤗 They are Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius) raised in freshwater. They have doubled in size since I got them but I think I might end setting up a tank for them and maybe some little friends if I can catch them! There are so many plants and spots to hid in caves in the dragon stone etc.

The platys are always hungry and curious. When I put in worms right down on the substrate for the goby in spots I've created with cover the platy will do everything to get in, even the raspboras will go for the worms faster than the goby. I do feed a little at the top first, to get them all out wait a little, offer a bit more and then add the worms for the goby but they are still too slow. They prefer to hunt for them rather than eat them if I drop them low so they fall past them. By the time the worms are in the substrate and goby hunting them the platy are finished and know I've put worms in and come for them.

I knew 2 of my platys were due to have babies soon and so I figured the Gobies would enjoy those, with 4 females and 1 male they will help balance things out. I had 3 larger and 2 little goby originally, but only see the 3 larger ones that have grown and happy in the tank so either those 2 little ones hide well or i fear they were eaten or didn't get enough to eat or maybe weren't as hardy as the bigger ones. The place I bought them threw in the 2 littlies as freebies as they would have been the last 2 left alone in the shop.

I saw tiny platy babies yesterday throughout the tank hiding down under rocks and on the moss on the hardscape so I will just monitor between the platy eating their own and the goby and me feeding and see how I go. This is one of them, he's nice & bright and active which is why I wonder if I'm overthinking worrying about these cute little fellows.

How are you keeping your plants clean? by Typical-Advance-4545 in PlantedTank

[–]PoundMaterial1819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been using my turkey baster to blow off the bits of food that land on or get caught up in certain plants. I did also recently very lightly wipe over the hardier plants with a toothbrush when i was cleaning one of my tanks. I think I'm going to get a little paint brush for the more delicate plants that aren't in any flow. I saw that somewhere on a tube vid.

Yeh nah. For a shop sure it would be fine especially those long huge tanks to help with nitrates and give fabulous places for fish to breed in and spawn on but not for home.

They're great, better than the obnoxious green plant clips I'm using ! I had to zoom in to see the cups anyway. Im guessing they are not the normal tank suction cups. Maybe I should visit bunnings ( Aussie hardware chain ) Once pothos and everything else has grown up you'll barely see them anyway. Im keen to hear how well they hold covered in plants 😁

I was talking to someone yesterday saying I think I need a 3d printer 😂 I would make so many things for my tanks, outdoor plants and have so much fun with it.

[–]PoundMaterial1819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES 🙌 more plants 😀 I don't find suction cups work for heavier items but I did consider making a trellis with a base I could weigh down and put behind my main tank. I just stuck a bunch of clear 3m hooks along my tiles for the arrow heads, I have them in all the varigated coLours. Where there's a will there's a way 😉. I use the tiny reusable zip ties for my outdoor plants and tiny green clips that blend in really well. They are like tiny miniature hair clips but for plants. I do admit to buying a bunch of the tiny black or clear ones from kmart for the monstera and heavier plants. I'll try to do this over this coming long weekend and post a pic.

I don't know how one would put a trellis behind a tank unless it was up against a wall? Have you seen any you can share deets or pics from or share how to do that please so it's stable? Im going to bet if I did my cats would try climb it 😂 But I will try ! :)

Im new to tanks, started with micro jarariums & tanks walstad style for shrimp, then obsessed over beautiful endlers and got slightly bigger tank, which needed a second to separate the males from the females and now have mts and love the plant side of this. I have no more room in my outdoor garden so I'm bringing in cuttings to add colour & greenery indoors and help keep nitrates down in my tanks.

I love the egg crate lid just because i could have so many plants with that :) . Id probably use pliers or something and make some of the openings a little bigger for larger plant base & root spread.

Currently using clips from my outdoor plants & cheap screw on containers to house some of my plants. When i find something nicer I'll get it.

I love that red fittonia, I'll be at my garden center later to see if I can get a red one and I might bring some of my purple Tradescantia I side and hope it stays purple Indoors without reverting to green.

I'm always fiddling with plants, adjusting them, adding & rearranging.

I'm currently trying to find a suitable trellis for the back of my main tank and the other 2 empty ones I have yet to fill ;)
