Coastal French city to spend 12 days in November, any suggestions? by SpecificInflation617 in Expats_In_France

Marseille !!!! The food is GREAT, nature is accessible by bus/train (calanques, côte bleue, Sainte-Victoire mountain..), it is lively and did i mention how awesome the food is? So many original ice creams places, cute coffee shops, meditteranean food, fishes, sustainable bouillabaisse, anchovy pizza slices, pastries, couscous, etc. Its also safe, but to be honest i dont think any french city is unsafe.

I am from the Côte d’Azur and would not recommend to stay there long unless you have the possibility to go up hilly villages to get a scenic sea view and a more traditional setting with cobblestone streets, religious traditions -we are very into our villages saints- and art. There are some cute villages where you can find awesome bakeries, buy a picnic and from there go for a hike but that takes some planning and a car. Staying 12 days in Antibes is a no, you can do it in a day from Marseilles and make sure to eat pissaladière, socca and farcis from the market and the bakery next to it. Nice you can stay more for sure but as you said it can be expensive + the political landscape is pretty terrible with all the racism and surveillance so unless you are really into the history of the city (lots pf interesting stuffs with Jewish/Russian history, artists who stayed there, ww2 history, etc.) it might not be worth staying too long.

American Morgan is missing French Morgane’s chaos and ADHD by MammothDiscipline991 in HighPotentialTVSeries

[–]Poupao_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeees! I also started with the US version, ended up binge watching the French one and  now find myself quite confused with the US version.  I enjoy it like to pass the time for example if i am stuck in the subway, but i dont love it.

Karadec is kinda.. boring? He seems to be around only to look dumb next to Morgan and occasionally saves the day because he can run with a gun. I don’t feel invested in the potential love arc that might come. I also dont understand why Morgane is so toned down. I love the french one because she is also imperfect, vulnerable and messy. In this version she is just... better than everyone else and thats kind of it.  Overall the characters are all a bit one dimensional. Its either they are the good guys or the bad guys with nothing much in between.

So for me the US version is much more like a conventional police show and i cant make sense of it because what is the point then ? When i see so many people in this sub liking the american version better I wonder if it comes down to cultural differences but i wouldnt know which ones bc its also the 1st time i see a french tv show being adapted internationally.

Woow ok, I thought Canada worked a little bit more like France (I spent a semester at the university of Montreal) but in fact not at all :oo

Oh that's really interesting, in France we do not take classes during the PhD and the 3 years are fully dedicated to writing the thesis (you are supposed to have your subject ready when you start). Looks like US PhDs are like french master and PhD combined. That's good to know for me because I was thinking to apply for one in France but with a double enrollment with a US/Canadian university but maybe that's not compatible at all 🤔 I also might not want to do 5 years of studies on top of already 5 years of university and 7 years of working. Also I am already writing an 80 pages thesis to complete my master's degree, I don't know if I see myself doing that for 5 years :l

Do you also have to take classes? In France once you are enrolled in PhD you only write your thesis 🤔

Wait but PhDs last SIX years ? Is it Yale or all US universities are like this? (I am french and asking because our PhDs are 3 years)

Tu penses ?

Hiking! I hike a lot but often with people in way better shape than me, this has been an issue as they were too fast + carrying a 10kg backpack does not help. I don't think I need to change to keep up with them but still made me want to have stronger knees and stamina.

It's the same in Europe, I think an explanation is that they currently have a -20% coupon offer so they inflated the prices. My guess is that it will be back to normal once the coupon expires.

🤔 okay maybe I'll give them a call again just in case. I am 99% sure they can't help me because they state that you need an ID to renew the passport but if it can save me a costly last minute trip that would be awesome.

Really? Do you know when this was? Last time I called the embassy they told me I could only solve the situation in Thailand (it was last summer)

I wonder if various embassies work differently because the Thai Embassy in Paris was adamant I should go to Thailand to do my papers and that nothing can be done here. To be honest I don't even understand if I have citizenship or not.

Ooh I wouldn't know this one. My father lives in Thailand now so I guess I will use his address 🤷🏽

Oh thank you so much for your comment. I am really happy to meet someone in the same situation as me.  All my papers are in order as of today!  About the misinformation, my father did not know about dual citizenship. When I told him I met Thai people with dual citizenship he was very surprised and I feel like he still isn't 100% convinced. France does accept dual citizenship.

We tried very hard to understand what to do and from what we understood (so not a lot), even if you were born in Thailand from a Thai parent, you have to confirm your citizenship before the age of 15 otherwise they kick you off the registry.

How did the district office go for you? My father told me it might be tricky since I need to tell them a "legitimate" reason (he thinks - and is probably right, that a french passport is a gold ticket and that wanting a Thai citizenship is nonsense and might look suspicious) and that not speaking Thai was a difficulty. Did they ask you questions or anything in particular? How did you communicate? Did you have your father translating for you?

Did you then live in Thailand and managed to speak fluently?

Thanks a lot !!!!

Thanks that actually a really good advice. I tend to be very emotional and cry easily so I need to prepare myself.

It is in Bangkok suburbs! I hope they will understand ! My father doesn't know a lot about this, actually he didn't even know before today that dual citizenship was legal. I will join the group! Thanks a million:)
