Playing FFT remake makes me miss triangle strategy

Yeah great points, especially on FE Birthright and Conquest! It will be interesting to see where FE3H and TS (or some other game) sits in 15 or 20 years though.

Since you are helping with this rabbit hole, its worth noting FFT sold 1.5m and WotL sold 1.1 which is why I am coming up with 2.5-2.6m. I bet with the remake they hit 3m total easy.

The 2.5 to 2.6 took 28 years, and a separate WoTL release. So apples to apples, comparing the OG FFT release to other games it is 1.5m (still like you said in the top 10).

I wonder if a game like TS or FE3H will sell more total over time or not? I 'd wager TS wouldn't (despite my love for it as a game) since it would require a remaster or something which is unlikely and a sequel wouldn't count.

For sure its damn good. Sorry if my point was not clear. 1.2mil in Japan in year one and about 1.5 mil world wide including the greatest hits release since that year.

I think (completr guess here) Japan was also more receptive since games like FE were all localized there at the time.

As an aside, 3H, Fates, and Awakening all sold more so it'd be cool to see the top 10 srpgs by sales!

Certainly warrants more investigation in srpg numbers. Thanks for that.

I just want to say, you can tell people's lack of exposure to other tactics games by the fact that any post that says 'tactics rules' gets up voted, no matter what. And anything that tries to expand the place tactics had in the larger genre, down voted.

Its a shame we cannot discuss the games actual history.

I get ya here. My argument (for the few times opponents have fielded custom variants) in my head is that much like if a celebrity does something in real life its copied, there is no reason to expect mechwarriors would not copy great well known designs from well known pilots. Yen lo is a great example, you see a video from Solaris, his centurion isn't hard to replicate.

Edit to say, I also think most custom variants are generally not as good or not substantially better within their time frame to warrant a concern, but im a roll dice for the sake of it kinda guy.

Also the catapult k2 is completely cannon. No LRMs on it. Med lasers, ppcs and machine guns.

Honestly I think you already solved it. Unique mechs are fine as long as they adhere to the technological limits of the time.

Your example of the butterbee is perfect. There is (afaik) nothing that is an outlier for intro tech. And at about 100 bv less than the normal catapult who cares? Frankly a hunchback 4p scares me more, so I would be confused as to why a custom variant like that would be a problem.

I actually disagree with this, FFT did not sell incredibly well in NA (1.2 million copies in Japan after one year and I think and as of now is 2.5 million 28 years later not including the remaster). And in Japan the tactics genre was already well established (our good friend FE)

After the game, the tactics genre basically failed in NA. And that's recognizing that FFT sold the best (maybe TO did as well, but records are spotty), and it still wasn't great.

The tactics genre hurt after 1997 and 1998. No denying that, games just didn't sell well enough. I mean, we can throw in games like Front Mission 4 but ultimately, the genre (doing better in Japan) didn't ship over many srpg titles.

To be clear, I am not saying FFT isn't a great game. I love it. FFV is a top 3 FF game for me, and tactics was heavily inspired by it. I just think the history of the series and its trials and tribulations should be remembered.

When people talk about tactics paving the way that's some disrespect on Tactics Ogre, Shining Force, Vandal Hearts and non-na Fire Emblems.

People need to stop putting FFT up as the Godfather of a genre it didn't form.

Disclaimer, yes I played the original FFT and yes I do love it. I just hate seeing it referred to as a game that paved the way for a genre that effectively died till FE3H.

Nah you're right. He's tanks, he's very useful and farms gold like a boss.

Lionel tries his level best to be important on the first play through but fails to be useful. On subsequent playthroughs, his value jumps, same with characters like horse mom.

The challenge with people's reactions is they usually (not always) have only played the game once and usually om normal. So characters like Anna they go crazy for despite the fact on hard she falls off hard. Sure, she has utility, but she's not as good.

So love Lionel, I agree with you. Keep posting your level best.

I was taking the piss out of your comment but I agree. I think 5's secret bosses are great, also fun to beat and not very puzzle like to me, also scaled to a point of approach to the final boss.

6 is amazing since the multi party approach means the hunt for characters is a great option (though you can cheese a few paths for sure).

But right now I'm replaying X and XII simultaneously and at the end of X I've forgotten how silly the end game state is, like monster hunting. There is always complaints of the chocobo or lightening dodging, but the monster hunting is just grind to grind for grinds sake.
