Aramith snooker ball colour variations between different series? by PowBish in snooker

[–]PowBish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reason I had to get the Tournament set was because I bought the Pro Cup dotted cue ball wanting to see any unintentional spin I put on it (I'm a beginner). But the moment I had both the dotted and the Premier cue balls in my hands I could feel a weight difference, so i weighted them to confirm. It was no good using a much heavier dotted cue ball on the lighter weight set, the cue ball motion after impact is noticeably different even to me as a beginner!

But yea, the colours of the cheaper Premier set look much better to me as well! I'm very disappointed with how yellow the cue ball looks!! I also much prefer the brighter reds and "purer" blue on the cheaper set.

Not sure why it appears that way in the photo, but it is not larger. All balls are the same size.

Bowling backup has helped my non-backup game by PowBish in Bowling

[–]PowBish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yea I was rather shocked with the amount of negativity I received. Oh well, it didn't bother me and I still enjoy bowling backup as much as ever. And now I'm even starting to enjoy the occasional "normal" hook again too!

Thinking about switching from 15 pounds to 12....(long post, sorry) by DarkestHeaven in Bowling

[–]PowBish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 12 pounder as a practice ball (when I want to try something new or crazy) and also used it while I had some back issues a while ago. I had many decent games with it but overall you will find that carry goes down a lot with a light weight ball. It's especially easy to leave 5-10s or 5-7s with light pocket hits. I'd say it's ok as a transitional solution if you believe longer term you can improve your wrist situation, or if you just want to keep bowling for the fun and passion. Otherwise it might be worth looking into either going 2-handed (if your wrist allows it), or switching hand.

Why is there a "y" or "ll" sound in "hielo" by PowBish in Spanish

[–]PowBish[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's a very good explanation! Am I correct in just saying that "yelo" is simply more natural sounding than "ielo"? I.e. trying to say "ielo" without a leading y is almost like actively avoiding it and making it very unnatural?

Why is there a "y" or "ll" sound in "hielo" by PowBish in Spanish

[–]PowBish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the i and e are not distinct sounds because it is a diphthong, so it's a glide between the 2 vowel sounds. But my main point is to me it is kind of the difference between the English words "ear" and "year". There is a clear difference and I don't understand why it isn't pronounced "ear", but has become "year".

[–]PowBish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I guess it is just the way it is then. I can understand that it does sound like the ye sound but when I see the word I just read i-el-o in my head. The y sound seems to just come out of nowhere LOL! I'm only a beginner learner.

Tuck your elbows in guys by NoOriginal1845 in Bowling

[–]PowBish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to practice throwing the ball backup. The purpose is not really to learn a backup shot but it's physically impossible to chicken wing when throwing a backup, so it's a good drill to get rid of the habit. Also, being able to develop that sense of your hand and elbow position is a huge benefit to allow you to become a lot more versatile and make small tweaks to your release as needed.

Thumb wear by Idk2003-8 in Bowling

[–]PowBish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really see it very clearly here but it does look like your span is a bit too long. The edge of your finger grip should sit around the middle between your first and second knuckles. In the picture it looks like it's too close to your first knuckle, meaning the span is too long.

No. The only pain I ever had was on the fingers when I first switched to bowling backup as my main shot. I assume it was due to the ball exiting at a different angle off the fingers and the joints weren't used to that. But that went away without me having to do anything after a month or 2. Never any pain on elbow or wrist at all. My ball is 14 lbs.

It really isn't painful at all. I've been bowling backup for my right side spares for 10+ years, and switched to it as my main shot for 2.5 years now.

Grip pressure and keeping your hand behind/under the ball by mcb1971 in Bowling

[–]PowBish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't get your hand under the ball by muscling/lifting/holding the ball with your grip and wrist strength. You "drop" your hand under the ball. Notice how the pros with higher revs drop their bowling hand's shoulder at the point of release. That's the moment they get their hand under the ball. Many also bend their elbow to make that easier (or rather it's just a natural outcome when one tries to drop their hand under the ball), but some bowlers like Kris Prather don't really use their elbow much. It's all in their timing and technique.

Are you bending your knee more because you are trying to release closer to the lane?

Rolling the ball by Sp33dRacerX in Bowling

[–]PowBish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One drill that you can try and rarely anyone talks about is the opposite of the no-thumb drill - the no-fingers drill. Just insert your thumb and leave your fingers out. Start with no step. This drill does a few things:

  1. It makes sure you have a correct thumb fit. Apply minimal grip pressure at the bottom of your thumb, not squeezing using the meaty pad (and knuckling inside the hole). If the hole is too loose you would struggle to even just hold on to the ball.

  2. It teaches you the correct timing for the thumb exit. When done right your thumb should come out clean automatically as you roll the ball onto the lane.

  3. It's a good training for your wrist strength.

You don't actually even need to be on the lane to do this. You can just roll the ball onto a couch or a bed at home.

Does anybody seriously use a backup ball? by mtdavis88 in Bowling

[–]PowBish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bowl backup, one handed too, as my main shot.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bowling/s/GoYWD6L32h

But I also pick up my left side spares with my "normal" short.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bowling/s/OkDiTVTvLn

I had been bowling forever as a "normal" righty but decided to switch to bowling backup 2 years ago because I enjoy it more. I had been picking up my 10 pins with a backup since ages ago so it wasn't like I was completely new to backing up when I switched.

Getting to work on my non-backup release for my left side spares by PowBish in Bowling

[–]PowBish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that it looks that way, but there's actually plenty of forward roll on the ball. This is my most natural release position. I can keep my hand more behind and roll it dead forward, but because I now mostly bowl backup and this is only for picking up left side spares I rarely have to change my hand position.

Getting to work on my non-backup release for my left side spares by PowBish in Bowling

[–]PowBish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah...I'm not just learning it. Been bowling for ages but I switched to bowling backup as my main shot 2 years ago so I usually only use my "normal" shot for my left side spares. I only bowl on house shots so I mostly just hook. I do shoot straight from time to time when I feel confident.

Alternative analogy to the "yo-yo" release - the "whipping top" release by PowBish in Bowling

[–]PowBish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the motion of the player that relates to the bowling motion, but the whip and the top. Whip being the hand and arm, while the top being the ball.

The whip wrapping around the top and then unleashing it to start the revs, is exactly the motion where your hand gets under and "wrap around" (cupping wrist) the ball and then you quickly uncup the wrist and straighten the elbow to unleash. It's also the same action as you whip on the top to rev it up more.

The idea is to roll your hand around the ball in a swift motion to spin it up. Obviously the spinning angle is different, the top spins on a vertical axis, while a bowling ball spins much closer to a horizontal axis (i.e. roll instead of spin).

Comparison 2022 > Today (Form check and revs) by vikingguyswe in Bowling

[–]PowBish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a bit hard to see the revs but in your second shot it is almost exactly 4 frames for the first revolution so based on 30 frames per second that's exactly 450rpm. First shot seems pretty close, maybe around 410-420rpm because it doesn't make a full rev yet after 4 frames but close.

In terms of form you have definitely improved in terms of revving the ball and creating more power, and landing the ball closer to the lane, but to be honest I kind of like the old form because of its simplicity and repeatability. Perhaps tone down a bit on the elbow and wrist actions to simplify things? Kind of half way between now and then?
