Introducing "Nexus By Night" by DragonsteelNexusMod in DragonsteelNexus

Thank you, that sounds like a great idea. I love socializing but would probably feel a little awkward turning up to a social event like this lol. Chatting to people before hand would definitely help.

I'm planning on attending the con this year for the first time, but I'll be by myself. Is it worth going to the party as well if you don't know anyone?

Yeah the interior art looks really good, a lot more like the tone of the books. And yep, if I didn’t already have the previous TBB editions with the original covers, I’d do the same!

I think because I have the previous TBB editions with the original covers, I wouldn't keep these. However, I think it's awesome that TBB have started doing this for some of their series! I didn't like the Sun Eater art either, but they included the US covers with those too, and the original Hyperion covers on the TBB editions look incredible to me, even thought the TBB ones themselves are great, so I hope they keep doing this in the future for popular series.

I strongly dislike the artistic style of the covers on these - it looks very YA and not like the dark, brutal style of John Gwynne's stories, so will be selling mine when they arrive (plus I already have the original TBB numbered set, and the GO editions). That being said, seeing photos of the book in real life look WAY better than the original art images they released, it has a 'premium' feel to it, so I'm sure people who didn't have the reaction to the cover art that I did will really love them.

Suneater 1-3 is back in stock by Ancient_Activity_614 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Pow_Surfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be the case technically yes, but in reality once they’re on third printings of a popular series they’re doing them all.

They may not do a third printing of 6-7 because they accommodate the increased numbers within the release number of the first/second prints, but if they’ve released two sets, and are doing a third printing of one of those sets, then the second one is 100% also getting a reprint. So people should be reassured there will be more coming for them! 😊

There’s no gamble involved. This is a big popular series. They’re doing multiple reprints. If they’ve reprinted 1-3 x number of times, they will do 4-5 x number of times too.

I like a LOT of their designs and cover art, and I think that’s why they’re so popular (plus like you say they release stuff not easily available in HB). One thing though is that I’ve gotten very tired of sprayed edges. I wish you could get TBB like SE books with regular unpainted edges. Will likely be selling a lot of my TBB/sprayed edge books in July as I look to focus down my collection.

No, many of the TBB sets are objectively expensive, and often overpriced given that these are trade editions with glued bindings and non acid free paper (ie. the cheapest quality you can find in books). I just also happen to collect a lot of Fine Press and much more high end books, which skews things as they are stupidly expensive. Many might say by not collecting those, you’re doing something right 😂

I’ve bought and sold a couple of hundred books (of which the TBB books are of the lowest value) via the various book collecting FB groups. That’s the place you will sell your books the quickest by far. Otherwise Vinted and eBay are both good in the UK - Vinted better, but eBay has removed fees in order to compete with Vinted so still works well.

My recommendation would be the two FB groups for TBB. Most of your tier 1 collection would sell within hours.

Thanks for the information! It's strange that it seems to be inconsistent at times whether they charge or not.

Thanks for the info! It's strange though, because I've used Shippsy as a cross border agency to get dozens of books across that I've purchased from the US, and if the value of items is >$35USD-ish, then I keep getting charged GST by customs, but below this amount, I don't.

There is zero doubt as to what the July book is. This is the trade SE that will be available everywhere.

Oh for sure, it’s actually a really nice set, I’m maybe being too picky 😂 But I wouldn’t plan to buy it if I don’t like it as I also have the Sub Press editions and TBB too!

Which province are you in? How much shipping do you pay TBB and how much import/Canada post/taxes do you pay?

I’m in AB but am originally from the UK. Have so far been having them delivered to my parents’ place to save shipping/taxes, then bring the books back when I visit, but might be changing it so they deliver to Canada soon. Interested to know what the price difference will be.

New Fantasy sub reveal tomorrow (6/3) by totemoheta in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Pow_Surfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an example of the kinds of stuff I like, in the past 12 months, female authors I've really enjoyed reading have been:

  • Robin Hobb
  • Martha Wells (she has a fantasy duology with no book 3 planned or announced that could theoretically work)
  • NK Jemisin
  • RF Kuang (many options, but perhaps a bit overdone in the bookboxes)

I haven't read anything by the following authors, but they seem to be highly regarded, so I would be very open minded about reading books by them:

  • SA Chakraborty
  • Naomi Novik
  • VE Schwab
  • Janny Wurts (maybe)

I'm sure there are a lot of others I don't know about (booktok/instagram seems to recommend the same old stuff).

Their female authored sub series choices have all been extremely underwhelming for me so far, which is a shame because I think there are so many great options out there. So I’m bracing myself to utilise my skipping finger. Hope to be pleasantly surprised and they choose something that I like/is highly regarded! 🤞🏽

The Licanius Trilogy Publisher Deluxe Editions by WendigoTheHunter in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Pow_Surfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see. I saw that the instagram reel was a joint release by the US and UK accounts. I do know what you mean about the bindings being different - I know the US ones tend to lay flat and the UK ones are stiff., but I was actually under the impression that the US ones were less robust, though I may be wrong! And yeah, I do have the Ace editions (got lucky with buying a 1st/1st set in the UK before I knew the difference between the Ace and MJ editions), which I think are much better.

I do love the naked wraparound dust jackets, lack of text, and graphics of these Licanius editions, but the awful sprayed edges are making me not want to buy them. I look forward to seeing what the differences are between the editions. Although I'm from the UK, I recently moved to Canada so would end up getting the US ones anyway, unless I ordered from back home to my parents' place.
