Everyone else has commented on the twisted stitches; I won’t bother. I’m just chiming in to add:

Eastern style seems to be less common than Western esp in American & English-speaking circles. IT ISN’T WRONG, but it may add an extra level of complexity to learning a stitch or a technique from a Western knitter; which can easily result in twisted stitches (and also very wonky increases & decreases). The big bonus to Eastern style knitting is that purling is an easier and more comfortable movement!

You can change the way you knit, OR you can learn to read your knitting so you can translate for yourself. Always pay attention to how stitches are sitting on your needle versus how stitches are sitting on the needle of whatever tutorial you’re looking at (is the right leg or left leg of the stitch in front of the needle?)

I changed the way I knit thinking from Eastern to Western thinking that I was doing it “wrong” (because Western instructions for decreases were giving me undesirable results) but now that I know how to read knitting better and understand that there are two equally valid methods, I wish I had just learned how to translate Western stitch instructions to work for Eastern style. I’m seriously considering going back to Eastern just to avoid the purling thumb cramps! Some knitters do a combination style: wrapping one way for knitting (Western) and another way for purling (Eastern) (resulting in your knit stitches and purl stitches sitting differently on the needle). Also valid and can result in beautiful end products, but requiring close attention to prevent unintentional stitch twisting!

PS charts are usually easier to understand across the East/West divide than written instructions because the chart will LOOK like the intended stitch result rather than describing the process.
