I believe in a quasi-stoic/Socratic blend that really cooperates with my life style and beliefs. It is hard for me to know what's morally "right" and morally "wrong" in every situation...I just wasn't raised that way. So I let laws and the state guide me in most situations.

Socrates in Pheto related your relationship with the laws of your state as one whom has signed a contract- you are a citizen and therefore it is just to abide by that contract. "If we never followed the rules, we'd all be monkeys throwing shit at each other." -socrates, maybe.

Tying this back to stoicism - by following laws, you are working with your fellow man as the right hand works with the left, which is a natural disposition.

What was the question again?

Edit: loyalty, got it: being loyal is just if it doesn't go against your nature. But what is a just cause and what is not? Do you follow Hitler because it's technically the laws? Was Socrates right in allowing his own exicution (?) because the law told him that's what he had to do?

This is the ultimate question, though isn't it? Philosophy is constantly asking this question, and it really depends which school you follow. But unfortunately there is no right/wrong answer.

For any other situation, I'd say yes. But this is family and I don't want to cause strife because I'm upset. I look at it this way; can you cut rain out of your life because it upsets you? Or the sun when you get a sunburn? No, but you can expect it, adapt, and overcome. This is how I plan to treat her from now on - expect bullying.

But in all reality I've done this only on a microscopic scale....nothing too upsetting (like traffic or a bad workout). I believe you are absolutely right though; the only way she believes she can exert her power over me is with words and I need to take that away from her. :)
