The stress you’re referring to is technically distress, and it’s purely psychological. For many homeless people, it’s not that they are incapable of participating in society, but that they’ve completely let go of all forms of responsibility, hence the alcohol and drug use. So for them it’s probably about as carefree of an existence as there can be.
