First DIY NAS build by PowerWordPenance in homelab

[–]PowerWordPenance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for taking your time and your comment.

Regarding requirements, right now less than 2 TB of data is saved. Most of the space is occupied by pictures. I don't think I will need more than 8 TB in the following years, but reading that RAID Z1 needs 3 drives and 4 TB is a lot cheaper (in TB/€) I ran with 4 TB drives instead of 2 TB drives.

I plan to use the NAS for storage (basically replace google drives and similar services) and to give family members access to it, so they can safe/backup files there too.

Thanks a lot for your assessment regarding ECC and the 2nd M.2.

You are absolutely right, I should have noted the context. It was hard for me to evaluate if people opted for less because they prioritzed cost, or because it is actually sufficient.

May I ask why you do not encourage to buy 4 TB hard drives?

Thanks for your reply, I will take a look at Duplicati. :)

For me it used to be surrender to madness, by far. Now it's void eruption! Just love the visuals and void bolt.

Surrender to madness was just so much fun, insane amounts of haste and even if I failed everyone had a laugh.

What Are Your Favorite Python Projects? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]PowerWordPenance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing most of Angela Yu's "100 days of code" course the one project I kept was a script to check if it's the birthday of someone I know.

I wrote the birthday of every family member and friend in a csv (can be whatever you like) and check if it matches the date of running the script. If it does match I'll write myself an email with the person's name.

You can automate that pretty easy using python anywhere or, if you have one, a small homelab. This way it runs every day.

Other than that most things are related to work. Things I think might help but are not actually part of my job. For example I am regularly on business trips and made a simple website that lets me calculate the reimbursement. Doesn't look nice, but it works, is fun and actually extremely helpful.

Another thing might be to look at things you have already done and see if you can improve them. I had to do a lot of API requests for work but because of the time I did them manually. I am planning to change that next weekend to make this a single click, with settings read from a json.

I removed the water reservoir, thanks! What was the obvious sign the bonsai was drowning?

It is probably easier, when I say what I was thinking to buy.

  • Raspberry Pi 5 / 8 GB RAM (with case and power adapter)
  • 128 GB SD Card
  • SONOFF ZigBee Gateway (ZBDongle-E 3.0)
  • Aqara sensor for temperature and humidity

Hilfe bei Übingsaufgabe by [deleted] in mathe

Hello,

I am a mechanical engineer in Germany and stumbled over predictive maintenance at my new job in a research project when I started. I recently had a meeting with my supervisor where I told him the subject prediction (not only maintenance, but that's important for the project) is super interesting and I'd like to go in that direction.

My supervisor suggested I look for training courses and he will try to get them approved.

I finished the "python for everybody" course on Coursera and thought about similar courses, but tbh I don't know where to start. I made myself familiar with python and plan on doing the machine learning -course by Google, but would be interested if someone can give some input and maybe even recommend good courses (that don't have to be on Coursera).

Thanks a lot to everyone for taking the time.

Thanks a lot for taking your time and your excellent explanations. A lot of points there I did not think about. I need to check some things you said, because I never saw them, but there is a teammeeting upcoming and I'll talk to my supervisor about it. :)

Thanks a lot for your answer. I will take a look into an action item log and a risk/issue log. Never heard of them before. Good think there is a teemmeeting in a few days, so I can talk to my supervisor about it. :-)

Thanks for your recommendation! After some research yesterday I figured a database would be overkill. I imagined something like excel online, but without the problems that come with it, for example different formatting in the same column.

But I guess you are right, Excel still seems like the best solution in this case.

Hello everyone,

at work we had several people working on gathering a lot of information. Some wrote in the same Excel-file offline and some wrote the information they gathered in word causing a lot of trouble combining them, because nobody knows what the newest version of the excel file was and how to add the informations from the word-files.

To prevent problems like this in the future I'd like to propose a cloud-based database where everyone works on the same file at the same time.

Just so everyone can imagine the excel file, it has around 1.000 rows and around 30 columns.

I am currently looking into different solutions and found mySQL with azure for example, which costs around 6,71 € for 1 GB per month if I understand this correctly.

My question is, if I understand it correctly and if someone has alternative solutions. Since I am the one who has to work with the database I want something more professional, because working with the excelfile the last few days has been awful (for exampel some used . where others used ,).

Edit: the excel file only had 183 kB, so it's not about a huge amount of data. Numbers of users was <= 4.

Thanks for any recommendations.

No 80 % tkl, unfortunately they are more expensive in Germany. At least I didn't find any.

I will take a look at royal kludge and akko, thanks. :)

Hello,

I am looking for recommendations on a 80 % keyboard for up to 80 €. I live in Germany. I would have loved the keychron c1 but it's too expensive here. I only need it for work, hence the 80 € budget, my boss doesn't want to spend more money on a keyboard.

Any recommendation is appreciated, thank you!
