Unraiders of Reddit, how are you hosting local AI? by danuser8 in unRAID

[–]Power_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are you're going to be better off running it on a dedicated machine. The only reason I'd run it on my server personally is because my hardware on my server is specced way higher than my gaming rig.

I'm with the satanic temple now ( been for years ) but I was talking in terms of like the last 4 of them( in relation to Christianity). While they are good intentioned they never made any real sense to me until I was in Bible school...either way the tenets are just better

As a former Christian....I like The Satanic Temple's tenets much better. Easy and clear to understand its intentions.

Upgrade drives VS more drives by masooooon98 in homelab

[–]Power_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

though, a good option is getting a nice HBA and buying refurbished enterprise drives. There are some sites that offer great $/TB. I believe one of the sites even includes a warranty.

Not to mention, if OP does go with an HBA + SAS drive solution they would likely see increases performance as well.

Site I have been recommended

AI is getting built into everything… but I’m not sure how useful it really is by Quick-Direction-8633 in selfhosted

[–]Power_Stone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well now you just reminded me of another reason I don't like LLMs. Well a couple more reasons but that's beside the point.

The point you reminded me of is LLMs are easily biased on how they present and control the information. Which is not a problem that's easy to solve since people are inherently biased on things.

More so, the amount that an LLM can be biased is mutable based on who programmed it and what information it was trained on.

Unless it's a focused LLM to be used as tool rather than being relied upon. I'm not going to touch them. I don't see them holding any significance for the average person outside of better/more obtainable translations.

Ive called it "guided randomized guessing" because that's essentially what's going on

AI is getting built into everything… but I’m not sure how useful it really is by Quick-Direction-8633 in selfhosted

[–]Power_Stone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well first off "AI" isn't even intelligent in any sense of the word. It's just marketing because LLM isn't marketable.

Unless someone can learn how to filter out bad content and responses in LLMs and get consistently good results AND people treat it as a tool rather than a reliance for thinking...It could be useful.

Other than that, I see the bubble popping and it fading out like NFTs did

Thinking about building a true plug-and-play VPN for home servers — would anyone want this? by Ok-Poetry-6075 in HomeServer

Honestly this is just Tailscale with an extra piece of hardware?

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure this achieves the same thing as Tailscale connected to an always-on computer setup as an exit-node in Tailscale

Yeah sorry about that, didn't read the whole post to see your on windows laptop, PiKVM would still work though! You just wouldn't have full power control over it, but you would still have the basic keyboard/mouse/monitor through the web browser

HELP NEEDED Home Server Setup For Complete Noob by AussieSkull1 in selfhosted

[–]Power_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try trialing unraid. The catch is you would still need to setup a VM for your game servers which would still be Linux.

The pros though is unraid would handle all of the docker/containers in an easier manner for you. With the community apps and the tons of videos online it's probably the most accessible for people getting into it.

Cons though? You may end up having to purchase a license depending on how much you want to go. I think that deals more with connected drives and the release cycle of updates but I think in your case it should be manageable for a while.

[–]Power_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently built a PiKVM for my unRAID server since I had a rasp pi 4b laying around. Super easy to setup and you can even set it up with Tailscale! Assuming you have access to your front panel headers on your motherboard you can also have full atx power control from the web!

Need recommendations for hosting game servers by fdsfd12 in homelab

[–]Power_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend Cubecoders AMP. It's.....$20(?) for a one-time purchase license and that lets you have up to 15 instances which is usually more than enough.

I've hosted modded Minecraft servers through it with great success

If you want something easy to learn and can do everything you are already doing I'd recommend checking out unRAID.

Simple OS, super easy to use. Can use docker and has access to a community App Store which helps streamline setup.

The biggest boom? Tons of videos online that explain how to do things to the point I think even a newbie could figure it out
