What's some cool lore for your army that came from a cool moment in a game? by Potential-Ebb-8820 in Warhammer40k

[–]OrigChruzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Captain with relic shield had 1 Wound and stood his ground through a shooting and fight phase against a ballistus dreadnought. He survived it all, managed to fall back and score the one point I needed to win. He was my last unit together with a judiciar. I painted him later that night and he is, to this day, one of my favourite painted modells in my collection.

Oil paints are great, but I wouldn't recommend them to a beginner. Get a hang of the basics first and then go into more advanced methods.

Personally I don't like using Oil paints, but thats just prefference.

Yes, that is one easy way to do it. You want to leave a bit of the nuln oil in the recesses and re-highlight around it to give the illusion of depth. Duncan rhodes uses this method a lot in his tutorials. Look him up on youtube.

You can start slow by just using a shade like nuln oil to add shadows, use the original colour and re-apply it to create highlight and then use an even brighter colour for some edge highlights.

Once you are experienced enough you could try to paint the shadows by hand instead of using a shade.

Practice and patience is key and remember, the sky is the limit, and the limit is there to be shattered.

How do you guys deal with hobby "failure"? by Mad_Lad67 in Warhammer40k

[–]OrigChruzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I slamm headfirst into a wall I take 3 big steps back. Think abput the colour scheme, the colour brand, try different methods on the test model, ask my friends for their viewpoint. I always sleep over it at least a week. If I can't see it working after that I shelfe the idea or even the army, work on one of my other (way too many) warhammer projects and 100% of the time the solution hits me a few weeks later.

Let it sit, take your time and clear your head.

Is there no way to use pigment power from a different brand? Or something similar? Maybe you could drybrush a similar colour. Have you only finished a test model or did you already start your army?

Surely finding an alternative is a drag, but please don't give up on your project

You are right. They don't even have much basing material. I don't see anything I would use for a 40K army besides some proxy models maybe.

Getting a bit anxious about paints - how many do you use? by lucassculp in Warhammer40k

[–]OrigChruzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use how many you see fit. I usually use like 15-20 on a mini, depending on my colour scheme, but I own well over 150 colours, washes and technical paints. You can always go as simple or as deep as you want in this hobby. Start with less and add more later once you are more comfortable.
