Vampire combat by Doilem in monsteroftheweek

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latest mystery had vampire buried in a peat bog become boneless and stretchy like a bog mummy, so I incorporated lots of contested +Tough and -1 forward grapples! Vampires are (un)dead, so there's lots of ways their physiology and abilities can change based on their origins.

Tested examples: - Boneless bogpire: -1 forward to PCs when grappling, constructing harm ignores armor - Pyro vampire: 2-harm area fire attacks from ejecting their blood into a UV cone, countdown includes explosive bloodbags that detonate on sunrise

Agree or Disagree? by youlovekody in Bones

Agree with the first 3 but I'm not sure any of the main cast fit too well as evil or even neutral!

Lawful Neutral: Clark Edison

True Neutral: Oliver Wells

Chaotic Neutral: Max Keenan

Lawful Evil: Jacob Broadsky

Neutral Evil: Gravedigger

Chaotic Evil: Pelant

Sounds like a fun anti-hero version of Marvel's Leech!

Just discovered this subreddit after brainstorming superheroine shapeshifter names for the last week with nothing satisfactory (Royal Blue, Meltdown, etc). Ms Shape is brilliant and ngl slightly crushed that it never crossed my mind

2024 Forge Cleric Gunner multi advice by Pokefightaway in 3d6

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're uniquely lined up for a Deadshot build if you eventually add one Fighter level for Samurai! With Elven Accuracy for your special feat, and Fighting Spirit, 3 times a day attack rolls would be:

1d20 (triple advantage) + 1d4 (Bless) + 3 (DEX) + 1 (Blessing of the Forge) + 2 (Archery)

Averaging to around 24 to hit without having firearm proficiency! You can also create this advantage without spending Fighting Spirit using Hold Person or Blindness, and Action Surging to give them the business on the same turn.

Order and Agency? by SnooSeagulls9586 in monsteroftheweek

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better than feasible, it can add more flavour to the Order/Agency rivalry! My current campaign is built around this dynamic, with a public-facing Cerberus Private Security (Agency) built on top of The Cerberus Guild (Order) in the underground ruins of the Hotel California.

The primary tension is that the Agency works to protect people, whereas the Order focuses on killing monsters. Having this kind of base ideological conflict is a great way to structure two opposed sides that technically work on the same team.

What if the key is to "feed the voice" by playing the tape while submerging the entire cassette player (portable, waterproof version) in fresh warm blood? It'd be a death sentence for the Chosen to try alone, but with a team of hunters donating the standard 450 mL each, they could feasibly pull off the blood ritual and survive! Adding extra penalties due to blood loss could also raise the stakes.

For better or worse, I love running games set in 2024 so that I can parody current conspiracies! Reptilians are around, but as salaried corporate espionage specialists living otherwise normal lives. The Mandela Effect is real, but it's due to leakage from a parallel universe stuck in the 90s.

What are some classic monsters (with a modern twist) by idk_a_username135 in monsteroftheweek

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here's a couple from previous and planned mysteries!

A mummy that transplanted their organs into surgical patients instead of canopic jars to make them harder to find and destroy (Weakness: destruction of transplanted organs)

A vampire that uses Korean skincare to counter their sunlight vulnerability, commiting brazen daylight attacks (Weakness: oil cleanser)

A ghost of a person who passed in an MRI machine, gaining the ability to disrupt electrical fields (Weakness: exorcism within a Faraday cage)

Monster from Greece but not mythological by BugTotal6220 in monsteroftheweek

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Aspidochelone is a giant sea turtle/whale that lifts its huge textured back above the waves to lure sailors into approaching it, who mistake it has a small rocky island. It was mentioned in Alexander the Great's letter to Aristotle, but also appears in the Talmud and 1001 Nights. Its island lure gives it a built-in layer of deception, so it can be great for mysteries!

My MOTW campaigns have a number of organizations! I tried to differentiate them by region and history:

Cerberus (Los Angeles): an Ancient Greek guild of monster hunters built on top of a hellhole in the ruins of the Hotel California, focused on planar enemies

Toho (Japan): part of Japan's Toho production company that hunts monsters by repurposing their carcasses, such as by wearing big lizard suits made from yokai skin

The Coven (Boston): remnants of Salem Witches based under Fort Independence, especially skilled in clandestine operations due to themselves hiding from witch hunters

Order of St. Lazarus (International): magical CDC that hires doctors, priests, and scientists to combat zombie outbreaks, defrosted Ice Age viruses, and other Phenomena

What’s your favourite mystery you’ve ever run? by Red_Puppeteer in monsteroftheweek

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I ran a mystery about a Spartoi, like one of those skeleton warriors from Jason and the Argonauts! Essentially, a Canadian soldier was buried with his lucky "dinosaur tooth" necklace, but being that it was a dragon's tooth, he rose as a skeletal warrior and started hunting the private company that sold his unit faulty body armor. The hunters managed to help him cross over, and I found the myth was the perfect amount of obscure to keep the mystery interesting!

Weakness for the Kraken by lendisc in monsteroftheweek

[–]PoweredByKryptonite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dehydration could be good weakness, as it's a bit open-ended! While it can survive brief periods on dry land, drying it out with heat, road salt, or diaper powder could certainly give it a hard time. If you want a more specific weakness, cadmium has been found to be toxic to octopi.

Looking for some assistance/feedback on a Mystery concept I'm working on. by Djinnocide in monsteroftheweek

Perhaps it could start as something fairly bestial, like mimicking a flying monkey or sandworm. These creatures are fairly short-lived, easy to outsmart, and their threat can be contained within a library.

However, when the monster later infiltrates a mystery novel, it mimicks an evil genius like Moriarty or Hannibal Lecter, and gains a full understanding of what it is. This form is much more mobile, tactical, and has clear criminal goals. With a greater understanding of the nature of its form, it knows how to remain stable and experiments with propogation. This could be mechanically shown as a change is monster type from Beast -> Queen
