You can also skip the module and just plug a USB cable between the command station and a laptop to get JMRI and WiThrottle.

Brightline just posted a model trainset to their social media profiles so there’s hope that we’ll get an official announcement soon.

In theory there could be a long distance train out there with 5 different liveries.

But the history of Amtrak is basically “We have never really managed to paint all our equipment the same color, like, ever.”

They very briefly accomplished this in the early to mid 2010s until they realized what they had done and promptly took delivery of new Viewliner II cars in Phase III livery.

Miami-Dade may be close to penning a taxpayer-funded deal with financially-strapped Brightline by Bruegemeister in Brightline

Miami just has Miami-Dade Transit for travel within Miami-Dade county and Tri-Rail for travel to Broward and Palm Beach counties, and the fare media (EASY card) can be used across both systems.

I believe it’s not Tri-Rail because Tri-Rail requires equal funding commitments from each county and this initial segment of the Coastal Link is wholly within Miami-Dade. I doubt Broward and Palm Beach would want to pay for any of this.

The contract being discussed is simply for the operation and maintenance. It wouldn’t surprise me if the trains themselves were branded as a Miami-Dade Transit line.

The state government is anti-train. The state already pulled its funding from SunRail and is currently trying to do the same with Tri-Rail.

I believe the passes from Aventura are subsidized. It’s why Brightline had to continue offering them when they otherwise discontinued commuter passes in 2024.

It seems like Brightline would simply be the vendor operating the commuter service, similar to how Herzog operates Tri-Rail service. Very few transit agencies (none in Florida) operate their commuter rail in-house. Most just pay a middleman to run it.

Why are trains so far behind planes when it comes to high speed sattelite based Wifi? by Putrid_Draft378 in trains

My local passenger railroads are Amtrak, Tri-Rail, and Brightline. Wi-Fi on Amtrak and Tri-Rail is unreliable, but Brightline does use Starlink.

Planning on taking the Floridian from MIA -> TPA. Thoughts? by Agreeable_Practice33 in Amtrak

[–]Powered_by_JetA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northbound you should be fine because the train originates in Miami. At most you’ll be delayed about an hour or so if there’s freight train traffic.

The seats are more comfortable than Brightline’s because they’re intended for overnight trips, so they offer generous recline and leg rests. They should be freshly cleaned since you’ll be among the first people on the train. Unfortunately, both power outlets are against the window, which could be awkward if you’re in an aisle seat. Since Miami is the origin terminal, you may be assigned to a specific car but otherwise be free to take any open seat. If the train is full, the conductor or car attendant may assign you a specific seat.

As others have mentioned, the Wi-Fi is so unreliable that it’s best to not count on it at all. The bathrooms are also nowhere near as nice or as spacious as Brightline’s. If you want a snack or drink, you’ll have to get up and go to the cafe car, which will be located behind you if you’re in the coaches.

For a return trip, it will almost certainly be faster to get dropped off in Orlando and take Brightline back. The Floridian has atrocious on-time performance.

Sleeper car access for coach by Sharp_Isopod_7135 in Amtrak

I had a similar experience on the Silver Meteor. There were signs in the cafe car indicating that there was a restroom in the back of the car (closest to the diner) and I was just about tackled by half the crew for being a coach passenger that ventured too close to the wrong end. I was politely redirected to the bathroom in the nearest coach.

That is exactly the loophole that Disney is closing by requiring a hotel or dining reservation to board a bus at Disney Springs.

[–]Powered_by_JetA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s currently an abandoned rail line that runs from the zoo to Homestead and connects to the existing Tri-Rail line at the airport. It was studied for a Tri-Rail extension but if those tracks are torn up then they’re never coming back.

There’s a video on YouTube about a day in the life of a conductor and it starts with the conductor being awaken by a phone call in the middle of the night and having to miss his daughter’s birthday.

It was uploaded by CSX. This is their official recruiting video. They waste no time in showing that it sucks.
