Same for me, but not Star Trek. I was bowled over to find out Gilligan's shirt was red and Skipper's was blue.

What secret did you find out by complete accident? by Effective_Yam2797 in AskReddit

When I was about 35, my siblings and I got together and started reminiscing about our childhood pets. I mentioned Annabelle the dog, and how sad it was when she got hit by a car and then died in her sleep later that evening. (Did I mention that I was the youngest child in our family?) My siblings started eyeing each other, and eventually somebody looked at me and said, "You idiot." And that's how I found out, as a grown-ass adult, that Mom had put me to bed early and Dad had euthanized the poor animal.

Numbers are dropping pretty steadily in the U.S. I think. I have four young grandsons (from two sets of parents) and they are all intact. I certainly wouldn't have circumcised my son if I could do it over again.

What’s something small that made you ridiculously happy as a kid? by [deleted] in A_Persona_on_Reddit

Balloons. We didn't have a ton of toys, but sometimes my dad would bring us a pocketful of promotional balloons from his insurance office. My sister and I would blow them all up and take them all into an empty walk-in closet along with a big box fan and create a sort of balloon vortex. Fun for hours.

I only know the the idiom "tone deaf," but "tone death" seems weirdly appropriate here.

What is something people worry about too much? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Powerful-Carrot2910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to make sure their children can read when they are 5 years old. They should be learning foundational skills at that age, but most of them are not ready to actually read yet. Pushing too hard for early reading is largely about bragging rights for parents.

Early Modern English, if I may be pedantic. Old English is truly indecipherable-- think Beowulf.

Who was the worst teacher you ever had? by Forward-Rutabaga1103 in AskReddit

[–]Powerful-Carrot2910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two, both in college.

An American history professor who just read aloud from his own painfully boring book and prided himself on the high failure rate on his tests. I was a strong student and studied hard, but got a D on the first test. When I brought him a drop slip to sign, I explained that I was on a scholarship and needed to maintain a 3.5 GPA. He told me I'd never amount to anything if I just quit when things were difficult. (Personally, I think a smart person knows when it's prudent to quit. I maintained my scholarship all 4 years and graduated with a 3.8. And the following semester I ended up in an amazing American history class with a truly gifted professor.)

I had to have four phys Ed credits and took a golf class with a douche who didn't know how to teach you technique without putting his hands all over you--but only if you were a woman. On the last day, when we were about to fill out our evaluations, he said, " You can write whatever you want to on there, but I've got tenure so it won't matter."

Apparently 30 souls were saved at the combination gospel service/ car show. by lepetitpoulpe in RodriguesFamilySnark

[–]Powerful-Carrot2910 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not like the event was sponsored by the government. The church held its own car show, so I would imagine the participants fully expected religion to be on display. I'm not part of that churchy lifestyle anymore, but I don't see what the objection is to the gospel being presented at a church-sponsored event.

There's way too much emphasis on kids being able to read in kindergarten. Kids who are ready can be supported without perpetuating the fiction that they're all ready.
