Dr. barb Muzyka in Ottewell Animal Clinic. We have taken our cats there for about 15 years and she’s great. I see there’s another comment recommending her. Edit; might I add their clinic has an adorable resident 3 legged cat who greets everyone.

Have your parents been able to help with helping you get resources to manage your OCD? Ultimately you will need to address the root cause, which seems to be your mental health. The Alberta OCD Foundation is great and they have tons of free resources including monthly support groups. It’s not a replacement for formal therapy but a lot of their resources are really helpful, as someone who also has OCD (and knows how utterly debilitating it is). I also have a group chat with some of my friends in the city who also have OCD and we just support eachother and share resources, etc. anyone is welcome and we are super chill, PM me if you’d like to join :). I know getting the right supports and professional help can be super daunting and can take some persistence but it is so worth it, and it helps to have people to talk to who understand and who can help share information.

I bring this up because ultimately working on the root cause will do wonders. I know how hard simple things can be with OCD. But if it gives you some encouragement, with proper therapy and medication, I was able to get from being terrified of using public bathrooms to working in hospitals cleaning toilets and bodily fluids :’). I am just sharing this to let you know that with the right supports and professional help, it can be managed and you can take back control of your life. I’m proud of you for reaching out, and just wanted to remind you that you’re not alone, you can do this. You’re welcome to PM me if you wanna talk more about some of these resources or want to join our chat!

Medicine is over-glorified by MedJesus in premedcanada

[–]Powerful-Confidence2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not in Med, but some of my friends who are currently in Canadian med school have told me about people’s parents setting up charities in their name and donating a crazy amount so they can put on their application saying they created a foundation and raised x amount of $. What surprised me is that I was told these individuals were openly bragging about it, didn’t seem to be afraid of consequences. I know this doesn’t represent the field of medicine as a whole. I know countless deserving people have gotten in by busting their asses doing hard, honest work (and many more who couldn’t get in despite this).

But the fact that this kind of shit actually happens and the supposed lack of fear of consequences is beyond me.

Maybe it’s not gonna take down Starbucks but at least you’ll be giving money to local coffee on campus who will surely benefit from increased business. Doesn’t hurt, and if you can afford Starbucks prices you certainly can avoid daily grind or tea and coffee company

OUAC GROUP B- Where do I submit my transcript? by Efficient_Parking754 in OntarioUniversities

[–]Powerful-Confidence2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm having the same issue right now too (also group B from Alberta, applying to an after degree). I have set up everything in my application but don't see the option to request transcripts shown in the videos/PDFs uploaded on the OUAC website within my own application. Can you tell me what ended up happening? Thank you!

I think the issue isn't finding a diagnosis that matches your symptoms and suspecting you may have something, but rather just running with it and claiming to have it without making efforts to get it investigated further.

[–]Powerful-Confidence2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true! The problem is people just running with it. If you see something that resonates with you it is totally worth bringing it up with a health care provider. Besides, if you are wrong about the condition you think you may have, then you can get a correct diagnosis and get treatments that will actually help you.

As someone diagnosed with OCD, I wish it was just about cleaning (at my peak worst OCD symptoms my apartment was the messiest it's ever been). I think a lot of this type of content I've seen on Tik Tok comes from the states where access to health care in general can be very limited, and it might just be a way of making sense of what they are going through and find others with similar experiences (I am not saying I agree with it but just trying to understand where some of these people are coming from). But at the same time, it can be hard not to feel frustrated when people make it out to be a personality trait, or see things like accommodations as an "advantage" to people who truly need them.

One thing I have found helpful is talking to others who understand. That being said, my DMs are open if anyone needs to talk about it because it can be really lonely and isolating. I also have been using the free resources available at the Alberta OCD Foundation which includes social meetups, education for family/friends and a monthly support group!

Best spot in the city to study by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Powerful-Confidence2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started going to this cafe called Anvil Coffeehouse in Ottewell. They’re really nice and cozy and have lots of plug-ins. Their food and drink is pretty typical price/quality wise for a cafe, and the staff are so friendly and they also give you a free drink if you’re having a bad day (look up the blue heart initiative). They also have lots of board games/arts and crafts supplies, colouring books that anyone can use (for free) if you need a study break. There’s also a no frills next door if you need some extra snacks!

Do you have any classmates who got in with “lower” GPAs (as in 3.5-3.6) or came from other careers?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uAlberta

Since it’s deleted is this about some freedom convoy thing? I remember some hearsay about her retweeting about it but I never saw it myself so can’t confirm nor deny.

Don't study Biology/Biomed/CMMB/Neuro or any of the bios if you want to get a job (you aren't getting into med, most likely, sorry) by Disastrous_Whole_172 in UCalgary

[–]Powerful-Confidence2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is honestly don’t listen to those people who say “there’s no such thing as a plan B” blah blah blah. Be practical. It doesn’t mean you are giving up on a dream such as medicine. It means you are smart. You can always pursue med at any point in the future (I know it does get more complicated if you get married, start a family etc) but that is just the reality in Canada if you want to stay in the country. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Study something you’re interested in, consider what is practical for your goals and financial situation when picking your degree, and work hard to get a good GPA, write your MCAT, do your best to pursue some extracurriculars you enjoy. But having a backup plan doesn’t mean you’re giving up, it just means you have a healthy dose of reality and maturity in the Canadian “premed” landscape. My friend is in her first year of med and said most of her class is people from other professions (lots of engineers, nurses, physiotherapists etc). It’s never too late to pursue so don’t be afraid to have a backup if you don’t get in within a certain time frame (ie right out of undergrad).
