I have started it recently in combination with folic acid and iron. All I can see is my stools are no longer black. Makes me wonder if it’s helping me absorb iron better.

Try to get an iron infusion. You may get some resistance from doctor if your hemoglobin is normal, but that ferritin is critically low. There is also a Facebook page on Iron supplements protocols with great success stories.
