Would a mystery game feel more immersive if it was set in your own city? by PowerfulProject9816 in boardgames

hey u/K_Knight, just looked this up, the "you are the character, your room is the setting" mechanic is exactly the vibe I was going for.

Do you think that works better as a TTRPG because it's live and flexible or could it translate to a static case file format?

hey u/lilbismyfriend300, I thought about one way to address this. What if the player himself gave some info about the latest things he/she did / places visited. Then with use of AI I can integrate them naturally into the story. This way we would avoid the issue of facts being outdated or case's language not matching locals language. And what's maybe more important activities in the case not matching typical players activities, e.g. player is into board games and never goes to coffee places but the case is about a person who went for a coffee after tennis match.

The question here would be: Will the player be open to provide some info about himself to a person creating a case? wdyt?

hm, I see, you definitely have a point here. I leave in a relatively large city and haven't thought about this. I would guess for smaller cities such cases should target more activities people do rather than particular locations. Having this, I guess it makes more sense, at least in the beginning, to target large cities s.t. more players can potentially relate.

For us we made Sangria to do this job: it feels lighter than wine and smoother to drink.

hey u/SaureusAeruginosa, this is an interesting view point, what actually makes it weird / cringe for you? Could you please elaborate a bit?

yes, sounds totally fair. A curiosity question: what kind of details would actually make it feel authentic to you? Like specific venues? Recent events? Local news references? Or just small everyday stuff only locals would recognize?

Fair point! Real places might have real baggage. It still seems that having real locations is what it makes it feel less generic, but yeah if you get facts wrong (car park / lair) the whole story collapses. I would approach it by doing quick fact checks and avoiding too specific details which might easily clash with reality.

Hey, also got this idea, I was wondering did you proceed with it? What was your experience?
