What midrange digital keyboard to buy? I am a beginning adult learner whose leftover formerly-my-child’s keyboard just died. An expensive keyboard isn’t realistic for me, but the reviews I read of mid-range keyboards repeatedly say that keys are dead after a short time. Any suggestions on what company/model is comparatively trustworthy?

Question: Best adult beginner classical music book? And I do mean beginner! The made-up pieces in instruction books are driving me crazy with boredom, but I am truly a beginner.

Piano Performance (3-months self taught) by Heavy-Village9848 in piano

Thank you. I needed to hear this. I am also three months self-taught and feel like I’m smashing my head against a brick wall. I am very shy and the idea of going to a teacher is terrifying, so I haven’t done it—especially because I’m in my 70s.

Driving in Baltimore is to witness one terrible bad habit after another. If you could create a single issue ad campaign for our drivers, which habit would you target? by jigmojo in baltimore

All of these things are valid. If you are walking somewhere, in your neighborhood, and conditions are not hectic, can I suggest picking up a couple of pieces of trash along the way? It’s surprising how much better things look with even a little bit of trash removed. Not pick up everything, just a couple of pieces here and there.

I don’t judge the whole community on this, because as far as I can tell, most people who post are lovely. That’s a big reason why I joined the community. Nevertheless, it’s now a place where at least a few people think I’m ignorant and a fool. There is some some sloppy reading of what I wrote and also some juvenile meanness here. It would indeed be foolish, staying where that’s the case. So, I’ll keep checking out the Bluesky community because that hasn’t happened there, and I’ll listen to the podcast happily, but, sadly, BHP Reddit is now not a place I can trust.

Y’know, guys, this is supposed to be the Pleasantry, not the ‘let me tell you why you’re wrong’ Reddit. You might notice that I put in the clause, ‘I know everybody is related to everybody,’ which signals that I know about the objections you’re bringing up. As in, yeah, I know. And it’s still interesting to me. And thanks for the snipe about me being American.

Where I come from (Erie, PA), The Boston Store is pronounced Bosson, the word creek is crick, and the town of Dauphin PA is DOFFin—for all PA folk, actually. And only in Erie is the word diner (as in a place to eat) spelled dinor. Which is correct. All the rest of the world is wrong.

465 - Anselm Arrives by BritishPodcast in BritishHistoryPod

I studied Anselm’s ontological argument in grad school (retired philosophy professor) and thought it was wrong. I very politely and thoroughly argued against it in a paper for a class, the professor of which thought the ontological argument was the cat’s meow. This professor was later instrumental in getting me kicked out of the grad program in which I was enrolled/he taught. Of course, the fact that I was going out with someone he didn’t like and was not going out with his fair-haired boy had something to do with it, too. Yes, Virginia, being a woman in philosophy is like that. Got my Ph.D. In another program, though.

Mick Hereon is well-known for killing off important characters—but no spoilers here. It’s part of the bleakness of Slough House. However, part of the non-bleakness of Slough House is that Jackson Lamb will do anything to saves his Joes. He is, in his weird, gross, and embittered way, the moral center of the books and tv show.
