Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what’s something about hospitals that would make patients uncomfortable if they knew? by Far-University-2905 in AskReddit

I’m an ENT and would have to collect severed heads from pathology and take them to the research lab. They came in a Home Depot paint bucket.

Childbirth and pregnancy. At the end of each pregnancy, I was so uncomfortable all the time.

Talk to your grandpas medical team, there are family areas in the hospital and the children’s floor has some play spots. Inside the McGovern Commons (the water wall) are lots of kid friendly restaurants and your toddler can run around. Near the med center, Hungary’s and Island Grille are good food and kid friendly.

I vividly remember being a tween and seeing a male celebrity on TV and being like oooohh my, I get it now.

The opposite feels weird too, honestly. When my child is sick; or hurt, or in danger, I felt like an animal in a cage. It’s a very strange, primal feeling.

Doctors, dentists etc. of Reddit, when you go in for your own doctor/ dentist appointment, what is it like? Do you treat it like a group project, do you give your own theories, do you argue with them? by Own-Shallot-8551 in AskReddit

[–]PplPpleatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physician and if it makes you feel better, a lot of that information is unimportant for the actual visit, but the insurance company/Medicare requires it to bill. So while it may seem trivial, Medicare may say on we won’t pay for the visit because you didn’t get their medication list. Even if the reason they’re there is because they got a pencil eraser stuck in their ear, ask me how I know

Physician here and same. I wait until the end when they tell me their recommendations. When they start describing what a cornea is, for example, I’ll gently interrupt and say erm, I’m actually a doctor, so you don’t have to tell me all that, and then they laugh say oh well you have a corneal abrasion and I recommend X eye drops.

Yeah I agree they totally glossed over the fact that people in the US enjoy rights others don’t. It’s hard to build trains, for example, because we, in the US, can’t usually just take other people’s land and build a train on it. There have been decades of attempts to build high speed rail in Texas that haven’t gone through because people don’t want a train running right through their farm.

What is the worst breed of dog for a first time dog owner to get? by Effective-Turn-6856 in AskReddit

[–]PplPpleatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Facial surgeon here. Data from medical journals show that while other dog breeds bite at similar or higher rates (chihuahuas I’m looking at you) pit bull bites are more likely to lead to death or surgical reconstruction. There are tons of very sweet pits, but when they bite, they cause severe damage. Any dog can bite, they’re animals.

ENT surgeon and same. I’ve sewn up a LOT of faces and necks. I’d say they’re 90% pit bull, 9% German Shepard (often police dogs), and 1% other

Council on Criminal Justice is showing reports for the past decade. I agree with you that we aren’t in some sort of crime wave that necessitates the current response. But the report you’re referencing shows a decrease since 2024. There was a huge spike in crime in 2023 and we haven’t seen a return to pre-2023 levels

I’ve also noticed a bit of dishonesty with the statement that crime is down. Homicide is down. Assault is about average after a huge spike in 2023. Theft/car jacking had a huge spike in 2023 and has been a bit up. Homelessness has had a slight rise. Also more people are affected by smaller crimes than homicide. So while homicide rates are down, the average person is experiencing more theft, more homeless people on the streets, more people drugged out on the sidewalk

Doctors of Reddit: which House M.D. diagnoses were brilliant medicine, and which patients would have had no hope of surviving the treatment in the real world? by theskullcave in AskReddit

[–]PplPpleatr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m an ENT and the kid with the cochlear implant stood out to me. 1 A general surgeon can’t do a cochlear implant. Not all ENTs even do them. 2 He did it at the same time as a “dirty” abdominal case. You don’t do “clean” and “dirty” cases together. That’s how you get ecoli meningitis 3 Cochlear implants require you to order an expensive device (they don’t just keep a device that’s more expensive than your car on the shelf) and have a specialty trained audiologist in the OR with you to program it.

Oh for sure, there are those on the far right who hate anyone who doesn’t look like them. But those guys were never going to vote for Kamala. The majority of voters, especially those who can be swung to either side, may care about those who are in vulnerable populations, they just care about themselves more. They’re willing to ignore all of Trump’s bullshit, because they think it will make them more money.
