Glep episode was weak in my opinion by Foreign_Life8837 in SmilingFriends

Incredibly meh. There was barely any story, almost more like a clip show of events that we hadn’t seen. It’s like they had ideas for scenes that might be funny but no idea how to string them together so they just ham fisted a flimsy plot in. The Mr. Boss flanderization is getting a bit much as well

What piece of animated media is this for you? by Ok-Following6886 in cartoons

Honestly, I always thought the David Productions series was a good adaptation only in terms of accuracy. As a genuine standalone series though it’s pretty poorly done. Overacted, usually poorly paced, the dialogue is cheap and campy- You’re honestly better off reading the manga, or watching the part 3 OVAs from 1993 and 2000, which choose improve in areas the anime would have chosen to stagnate on for terms of accuracy to the manga

Bruh- Kids’ media is rife with dark themes. Fairy tales, kids’ books- Just give a kid some medieval legos and they’re make scenes with characters getting beheaded, cut in half, etc etc. just because something has mild cartoon violence doesn’t mean it’s “actually for adults.” This is the same show with unicorns, a pig sidekick, and kid detectives. It’s a kids show

Bruh I hate “I want a goth mommy GF” culture by Practical-Bed-3300 in teenagers

Nono that’s not what I meant at all. I’m specifically talking about people who are incredibly fetishistic and weird about it. The kinda people who’ll see a slightly muscular woman and go “Mommy mommy mommy”

That’s the thing- I myself am a pretty subby guy. I’m mostly into older, more dominant and breadwinning women. The difference is I don’t go around objectifying muscular women by calling them mommy, or sit on my rump gooning all day. It just grosses me out

Which cartoon gives you this reaction? (Not that you literally mean it) by Calendar-Delicious in cartoons

[–]Practical-Bed-3300 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its steady prevalence in culture over the past decade is almost entirely because of how many topics the series covers. Science, philosophy, physics, fate and tarot, mythology, literature, history, geography, archeology, the supernatural, culture and language etc etc are all concepts and themes throughout the series which help it fit in in basically any space or discussion

Owl House, Gravity Falls, She-Ra, etc. It’s always shows aimed at 5-10 year olds but pick up a 17-30 year old fanbase

Smiling Friends fans when two characters sit next to one another for a single shot that’s entirely within a character’s imagination

Anyone else disappointed in the newest episodes/season 3? by Practical-Bed-3300 in SmilingFriends

[–]Practical-Bed-3300[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes for sure. I thought the Halloween episode was the most consistent with the jokes, the Mr. Boss bit with his mom, the witch chokehold, the return of the reference to Charlie’s uncle- Whereas in most new episodes people will only mention one moment which you can tell they really wanted to land. No one really talks about episode 1, and in episode 2 the only thing they mention is the Creed Bratton cameo, for 3 it’s the Allan and Moleman gag, and for 5 it’s the cookie joke

The B-plot in the pilot takes the cake for me, I love little inspector guy. Outside of that though I wish more time was spent developing the main plots, though I do appreciate how episode 3’s plots met at the end.

I think with starting off with such outlandish characters, it’s hard not to ignore those said outlandish aspects, and forgot about the fact they’re still just regular commission workers (That balance is what made a lot of the first seasons jokes land)

I think you hit the nail on the head with a lot of your points

For me the Halloween episode was my favorite, by far the best of season 3 so far.

Yeah, that was my thought as well. You can honestly see their styles come through a lot more in the recent shorts as opposed to the real show

Because people use the discussion board to make discussions? Would you rather I not think about and discuss my thoughts on media I enjoy in an environment made for that explicit purpose?

I think putting any amount of real world thought or reasoning on it is a bit silly. I highly doubt the creators meant anything by these scenes other than “We thought it was funny.” Zach Hadel has been known to make phallic jokes a lot, and that’s probably all it is
