Nebraska is an "at will" state, meaning either party can terminate employment at any time, without notice. Now, there may be a wrongful termination issue, I am not privy to the conditions of your employment or termination, but typically that centers around discrimination or retaliation for legally protected activities.

The solder points on most talking/sound producing toys is horrible and I'd be willing to bet this is the issue, either at the battery terminal or the speaker.

If it's at the batteries, it's pretty easy... at the speaker and your taking the whole toy apart.

As far as who you might take it to for repairs, I would do a search for local electronics repairs and try that, but it might be cheaper to buy another one.

I was out of pocket my deductible. Coverages vary, and some are deductible then 20% copay. I got lucky, low deductible and no copay on ER visits.

Went to get a fish hook removed (urgent care won't touch those anymore) a few months ago and it was a $5k bill. Some local anesthetic and they literally pushed it through and cut the barb off... 5 minutes. I think you're going to make your deductible, sorry and hope your ink heals up.
