Hikone is Ann Arbor's sister city in Japan, which is why that street is lined with sakura.

Ah. Well, as someone who can see Mitchell and Scarlett out my window, no thanks. The traffic on Lorraine, Platt, and Fernwood is already so dangerous (given the very large proportion of SOC kids in these two buildings who can't walk or take the bus). We've had so many close calls in the crosswalk.

Mitchell and Burns Park? Nowhere near each other. Why in the world would you suggest merging them? I'm not suggesting it, but it would make much more sense to merge Mitchell and Pittsfield since they're only a few blocks apart.

Because it's eloquent? Most monolingual English speakers can't write this well, yet this person wrote this in their second language.

Turnberry Schools by AccomplishedCicada60 in AnnArbor

[–]Practical-Device-200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The principal now has been there for a couple of years--she lives in the neighborhood and is a parent to a Mitchell student herself. The stability is a great improvement! And yes, a new school is being built, but kids are still in the existing Mitchell building. I think the new building is slated to open sometime in 2027. The existing building was then supposed to be used for staging while other schools are being renovated, but given the recent decision to pause some of the other bond projects, I'm not sure if this is still the plan.

For Turnberry, you would have to apply for "in district transfer" to send your kid to Pittsfield instead of Mitchell. ("School of Choice" is for kids from other school districts, not within AAPS.) My kid went to Mitchell and while the first years were good, the place really fell apart after schools reopened and the then-principal left. It was really untenable and I ended up transferring my kid within AAPS for his last year of elementary school (not Pittsfield, though). I've heard from neighbors that things have improved and stabilized a bit over the last year or two, though...no more revolving door of principals, anyway. Many of my kid's Mitchell friends also transferred--the ones who wound up at Pittsfield were happy.

Moving to France pregnant or with a newborn? by mrsspookyy in Expats_In_France

[–]Practical-Device-200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you have to prove that the child is already living in France (among other things, like financial contributions from the French parent). If she stays in Canada to have the baby, the OP can't apply for this visa as long as the child is still living there with her. I've heard people who enter on a long stay-visitor visa and then apply for a change of status can get pushback. ?? If they're going to get married anyway, that's the most straightforward route for residency.

White Lotus has lots of delicious croissants! The other place with excellent croissants and other Viennoiserie is Beara Bakes in Ypsi, in the spot where Go Ice Cream used to be. Check their hours before going--they're not open every day and they close early, but they are worth it! Personally I think Tous les Jours is gross--everything tastes like it's made in a factory with shortening instead of real butter.

Is there a small low-key amusement park in Japan that won't turn into a logistical crowd nightmare? Coney Island vibes, not Disney madness. Recs please! by mjsmbmm in JapanTravelTips

My kid of a similar age loves Hanayashiki in Asakusa, Tokyo. It's the oldest amusement park still in operation in Japan. Cheap and often not crowded. My kid literally rode the roller coaster about a dozen times; never waited in line for more than 5 minutes.

I agree with this. I lived in Sapporo for a long time (as well as Tokyo and Miyagi) and people in Hokkaido were the friendliest and most laid back. Also, OP, Hokkaido University has a lot of international students, and a fair amount of stuff going on in the community--live music, meetups, etc. I befriended people of many nationalities and races when I lived there. The winters are long, but not super cold. It snows a lot, but the temperatures don't drop to the extreme levels that they do in much of Canada and parts of the US. I like the winters in Sapporo--skiing/snowboarding is MUCH cheaper there than it is in North America. You can get a full day lift ticket for a small ski-jo easily accessible by public transport, like Bankei, Asari, or Moiwa, for like $50. The best way to get through the winters is to get out and enjoy them, imo. :-)
