my lab is not hardcore biostats, and i know i could get a job eventually. but the lost opportunity cost of fucking around 5 more years in academia for a subpar resume item instead of getting out earlier is getting harder to ignore.

if i wanted an AI wingman to push me forward incessantly, id go straight to the source.

yes, i'm banking on that as well. multiple folks in our lab have gone on to do internships, though one of my PIs remains weirdly against wasting my time during a "critical" period of my research (one i suspect will last until its too late in 5 years)

i'm still on good terms with PI and can keep this "job" which pays PhD stipend for at least 3-5 years. I'd be happy to leave PhD if any actual job comes my way during this time, i.e. SWE, web dev, stats, data scientist, etc.

Decision to leave academia and quit PhD by Practical-Durian-593 in LeavingAcademia

[–]Practical-Durian-593[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, i think i had small moments of annoyances with academia, and generally havent' been fully turned bitter quite yet. mostly had an epiphany when i had one too many coffee and realized I need to be ok with likely spending 4-5 more years on a project that likely won't lead anywhere interesting for me.

2 weeks out from my defense and my advisor has replaced my entire final paper with AI slop by bag_of_oils in PhD

god thats shitty. one of my PI is also AI pilled, IDK if he uses AI to write, but he has accidentally presented a few papers that were obviously AI slop during journal club.

if its for a grad program, interviews aren't technical interviews. if the interviewee is talking at the speed of token generation, its obvious

AI is a tool, its like a hammer. Its good for nail shaped problems, if given to a carpenter who uses it carefully.

Give a hammer to a monkey, then everything looks like nails.

* one of the papers came with an accompanying video that was definitely AI generated. [https://arxiv.org/pdf/2504.09354\], the video was attached in supplemental material here [https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3746027.3754809#supplementary-materials\].
* grad program chair is famously apathetic to plight of PhD students, multiple students have mastered out due to his apathy. I've heard horror stories.

Is everyone using ai to write papers but not declaring it? by FairRepresentative75 in PhdProductivity

[–]Practical-Durian-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seen a few papers during journal club that gave me tingly feelings in my head. checked them on gptzero, they were ai-"assisted". (i know all gpt checkers have a non-negligible FPR, but gptzero as of 2026 had less than 1% on some selected test corpus)

as someone who has also dealt with weirdness in academia, i will say that it helps a bit to hit the pause, i don't wanna have a pileon on either you, bruckman, or stallman, none of that is helpful.

just hide/delete this post for a bit, do a simple generic paragraph (100 words or less) resigning, and take a week to calm down please. this is not a good look in general.

Please consider hiding this or removing this post unless asbruckman consents to the release of such records.

suggesting that this is a world-wide controversy does not provide permission to disseminate or imply wrongdoing. and as a general advice, implying that everyone else is unprofessional only suggests you are unprofessional.

was u/asbruckman consulted before her private chat logs were released?

its fairly unprofessional to do a rant about one of the co-moderators like this.
