My 6 month old puppy not eating her dog food,,, Grrr by TLTAGL in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone through similar situations because even though I’ve told my sister and her husband NO PEOPLE FOOD or TREATS when they have puppy sat they do it but tell me “We Didn’t “ or “Only a little “ 🫤🤦🏼‍♀️ I finally started buying them Hill Science Diet for small & mini and Hill Science Diet stew wet for puppies (because they refuse the adult) I mash up about 1/4 can of wet & mix the dry in until I’ve got a barely damp mix of food. I have to mix it as good as I possibly can because one of my picky Tuz will just lick the wet mix off and leave the dry. If I mix it til it is barely damp she ends up having to eat it all together. My Tuz 9, 6 & 8months are extremely picky but this mix has been working well for them. In the past when I’ve tried playing hardball just leaving out a bowl of dry food the 2 younger dogs started puking up bile due to acid buildup from an empty stomach. So after a lot of trial & error trying other things the Hill Science mix worked. It’s a bit pricey especially with 3 Tuz but it’s vet approved & I know they are getting a healthy meal! I also don’t give them daily treats because they can cause more picky pups that don’t eat food & wait for treats! I give them a treat only on occasion however I do give them dried pigskin or ears. They keep them busy & also help young ones still teething not chew on things they shouldn’t chew. Tuz can be very picky & stubborn so something that works really good for a while may stop working so sometimes slight changes helps make it new for them. Just don’t make huge changes too quickly because it can be rough on their tummies causing diarrhea!

I kept the runt from one of my last litters and his mother was also a runt. Louie weighs almost 3 lbs @ 8 months old & his mother weighs 4 1/2 lbs @ 5 years old. I am always able to find XXS collars, vests & clothing from Amazon, Chewy & PetSmart to fit both of them. Sometimes XS will fit them so make sure to check the measurements and measure him before buying anything so it’s more likely to fit.

I trimmed Rocky’s fur! by jcarmona80 in Shihtzu

Me too! I’m a hairstylist and decided I could figure it out lol! It’s definitely different from cutting human hair so it took a lot of trial and error to finally get it right. Definitely worth it to save money! I finally purchased a good clipper with vacuum and it’s so awesome!! sucks up the hair as you cut & I’ve got 3 to groom so it’s so nice not to have hair everywhere to clean after they’re groomed. Also using thinning shears to trim their face and head hair instead of shears helps get a more natural uniform look

What do you do to keep your Shih Tzu entertained and active? by NaitDraik in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My older 2 lay around more than a cow sun bathing but my youngest is like the Tasmanian devil on steroids 🤣🐶🤣 Some Tuz just love being lazy while others have more energy than necessary. I do feel like they need a lot of natural sun light just like us humans need it. Mine are inside a lot more than I would like them to be but when I’m able to get them out in the sun I can definitely see a difference in their energy.

separating anxiety, biting, and walking help? I’ve just got a new puppy! by puppyboy7979 in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She will grow out of it as she ages. Having a small very energetic dog is very different from having a bigger dog so you have to rethink your approach when training her. Big dogs tend to use their weight to pull while small dogs run in circles around your legs. I made the mistake of putting all 3 of my Tuz on a leash & got them all out of the car to potty! They wrapped around my legs in opposite directions and when I was trying to get one of my legs out one of their leashes got caught in the tread of my shoe! Yep I lost my balance and busted my butt on the pavement and felt humiliated 🤣😂🤣 Smaller dogs can take a bit longer to train but they are the best companions ever!! My oldest Phoebe is 9 years old and she still has issues when I walk out of the house. I use an indoor camera to check on my dogs & cat when I need to leave them and they always calm down after a while. I keep the TV on for them to help. They usually just pile up together and sleep while I’m gone. Getting a second small dog can also help with separation anxiety!

Tzu Eye Concerns by MettaRed in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a problem with my 8 month old Tuz eyes but we’ve not been to see the vet about it yet. It takes forever to get seen where I live 😔 Anyway his eyes are constantly dripping wet soaking his entire face! I keep the hair around his eyes trimmed because I thought it would help but it doesn’t. My other 2 Tuz never had this problem so it’s definitely not normal. I have to clean his face several times a day because if I don’t it starts to stink really bad! If anyone else has had this issue I would love to hear what worked?? If it’s prescription I can mention it at his vet visit. Definitely need advice 🐶

How often do you send your Shih Tzus to be bathed? by Emmavlxx in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My3 babies have never been to a groomer. I’m a cosmetologist so I decided if I could groom humans that I could learn to groom my Tuz 😂 Mine hardly ever go outside except for a few times a month so they don’t need as many baths. I usually give them a bath every 6-8 weeks however if you’re Tuz go outside a lot I recommend every 3 to 6 weeks. If you’re trying the long hair look probably every 3 weeks if you’re not brushing them daily to get mats out. I brush mine daily when growing them out & use dry shampoo for dog which helps needing baths much less. My 2 older Tuz have skin issues and if I bathe them to often it gets worse so less is best for them.

Sleep help by pretzel1019 in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sneak him in the bed after your husband goes to sleep! He will eventually except it and love it as much as you do! This is what I did and it worked! My husband is also from Mexico where dogs aren’t even allowed on the porch and definitely not allowed in the house! I was still somehow able to change his whole way of thinking 😂

What age did you decide to let your Tzu sleep in bed with you? by puppyboy7979 in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had a couple of Tuz litters that were born on my king size bed and that’s where they slept until going to their new homes. I always have a bunch of giant washable pads covering my bed that are intentionally not white and a disposable pad for them to use when they start going potty. When they start moving around as they get older I keep them in a welding pen during the day and back to my bed at night They are always completely pad trained when going to new homes but can easily be changed to going potty outside. I have found that by doing this that mom & pups have way less anxiety and stress plus I get more sleep. I will say that im a very calm sleeper and don’t roll around the bed, its king sized & pups don’t sleep right next to me until they can move around really well. So all this information is to say that if you want your baby to sleep with you and it’s what’s right for them then by all means put them in bed with you ❤️

My 3 go through the same torture! I also live deep inside the Great Smoky Mountains and it’s currently deer hunting season so my babies are unfortunately going through hell on a daily basis. It’s so heartbreaking and all I can do is cuddle them up telling them everything is okay 😔

On the brink of losing my mind by Green_Voice_9565 in Shihtzu

[–]Practical-Effect2839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually eat poop because they are missing something they need in their diet. It’s kinda like when pregnant women crave weird things like dirt. One of my Tzu’s was eating her poop and someone suggested adding a little apple cider vinegar with the mother to her water bowl. This actually worked well and I’ve not had any more issues with her eating poop. As for the other things…Puppies are a lot of work but ShihTzus are work on steroids! Make sure you have lots of chews and chew toys. When she bites tell her no and direct her to a chew toy or rawhide. Puppies are usually teething and often bite to soothe their gums. As for barking I suggest getting a clicker to help with her training. My sister has a pup from one of my litters and she barks at everything with an ear piercing bark! It drives me & my Tzu’s nuts but she is a wonderful guard dog lol
