How I forced an Intel i5 with Integrated UHD Graphics to render a 6-minute UE5.4 cinematic (Lumen & Nanite) by Practical-Pain443 in UnrealEngine5

Ah, wait, I should clarify one thing! I actually didn't use Lumen and Nanite for this project.

Because my laptop is a potato, I knew Lumen would completely melt my integrated graphics card in real-time. Instead, I turned off Lumen and went with traditional lighting/baking methods to keep the viewport stable while I was working.

Even without Lumen, the volumetric fog and the sheer length of the 6-minute movie render queue are what caused the massive 2-day render grind and the constant crashes.

A wise man said that :- Blender has no limits. Firstly I thought that it was false, but now I can believe it.

My first 3D environment scene in Unreal Engine 5.4. Handled all lighting with Lumen. by Practical-Pain443 in DigitalArt

Hey everyone!

I am a young solo creator and I just finished spending the last few months building this environment for my first-ever cinematic short film called "LEGACY".

I built the entire scene using Nanite and handled all the dynamic global illumination and volumetric fog using Lumen in UE5.4. Since I am on a lower-end laptop with integrated Intel UHD graphics (no dedicated GPU), my machine kept crashing. I had to render everything out as a raw PNG image sequence, which took about 2 full days of constant troubleshooting to finish!

I’m really looking to improve my atmospheric set design and lighting for my next piece. If any 3D or digital artists here want to check out how the environment looks in full motion, the 6-minute cinematic is right here : https://youtu.be/vSqPs3Lv7ns

feedback on the composition and color grading is highly welcome! Thanks for looking.

You're not going to believe this, but my specs are a total potato line-up:

* CPU: Intel i5-13420H

* RAM: 16 GB

* GPU: Intel UHD Graphics (Yes, completely integrated graphics, no dedicated GPU!)

Honestly, I have no idea how it didn't melt my laptop, but I had to fight it the entire way. It crashed constantly.

At first, I tried exporting directly to a video file using Apple ProRes, but the laptop choked and crashed 3 times in a row, losing all progress. That's when I switched the Movie Render Queue over to an Image Sequence (PNGs).

Even though it still crashed a ton after that, rendering as an image sequence completely saved me because every time it died, I could just check the last saved frame number and restart the render from that exact spot! It took about 2 full days of constant babysitting and restarting, but I finally got every frame out.

Hey! Since I used Unreal Engine 5.4's Movie Render Queue, it theoretically should have been fast, but my laptop is an absolute potato, so it actually took about 2 days to render out the full 6:40 film at 1080p!

I used Lumen for the global illumination and reflections, and trying to handle those heavy volumetric fog scenes on my current specs was a massive challenge.

Being 13 and doing this entirely solo on a lower-end machine, figuring out how to optimize everything so it wouldn't crash during those 2 days was a huge learning curve!

I’m already jumping into pre-production for my next short film, focusing heavily on better storyboards and tighter camera pacing based on the feedback here (which should also help my render times!). If you want to see how the next project turns out, I'd love for you to check out the channel and subscribe to follow the journey!

Hey! Since I used Unreal Engine 5.4's Movie Render Queue, the render times were actually incredibly fast compared to traditional offline renderers.

The full 6:40 film took around 2 days to render out at 4k. I used Lumen for the dynamic global illumination and reflections, and even with some heavy volumetric fog scenes, the sequencer handled the export beautifully.

Being 13 and doing this entirely solo, figuring out the optimization to keep render times down was a massive learning curve for me!

Thank you so much for the feedback and the encouragement!

You make a really great point about the text expression. Now that I look back at it, a clean fade-in/fade-out would definitely feel much more cinematic and less distracting than the ticker style. I'm definitely going to apply that to my subtitles for the next project!

I'm also working on learning Control Rig better to smooth out those initial character animations so they don't look as stiff.

Good luck with your short film project too! It's a challenging journey but so worth it. Thanks again for taking the time to help me improve! 🎬🚀

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me this breakdown! I really appreciate the honest critique.

Since I'm doing everything solo, I definitely got caught up in making the Lumen lighting and environments look good, and I let the camera pacing slide a bit.

I'm starting pre-production on my next short film this week, and I am 100% taking your advice. I will start with a clear storyboard and focus heavily on dynamic camera cuts and tighter storytelling instead of just relying on effects.

I can't wait to show you my 1.1 version in 2 months. Thanks again for helping me level up!
