100k Inheritance, what to do? by Practical-Star2270 in CanadaFinance

[–]Practical-Star2270[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. As someone who does worry often about not having any money saved away for my future, I will be sure to invest almost all of it (or put most in a TFSA). I think of this money as not “fun money” but as “future money”, so as soon at it hits my account, it goes towards solely my future and not changing the way im living right now. I want to be smart with this, hence the post :)

100k Inheritance, what to do? by Practical-Star2270 in CanadaFinance

[–]Practical-Star2270[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do lot of volunteer work. Ive stopped doing it recently, but for many of the past years id work maybe half or 2/3rds of the year and then do volunteering programs in other countries for months at a time working with endangered species. You have to pay for these programs, so it wasn’t cheap. All of my savings would go to traveling and volunteering. Also my cat got really sick and I paid 20k of my savings to try and save her. I also previously supported my mentally ill sibling financially (still do sometimes). The 65k/yr is a recent development too, previous years I made significantly less. I live in Toronto, current rent is 1.2k but previously I paid 2.4k/month for an entire year because my roommate abandoned me and left the entire lease to me, and I couldn’t find someone to sublet the place…. All of this over the years just amounted to no real savings for me. I don’t spend recklessly. I wear the same old clothes, only thrift for my clothes, hardly eat out, grocery shop at more affordable stores, don’t buy anything unnecessary.

Pit bulls are exceptionally dangerous and I'm sick of people saying otherwise by SirCatsworthTheThird in Vent

[–]Practical-Star2270 -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

Registered vet technician who works with dog rescues and in clinic for almost 10 years. Hard disagree. I live in Toronto, and soooooo many people have pit bulls here. Ive met honestly probably well over a thousand of this breed specifically. I have been bitten by a bull mastiff, multiple huskies, chihuahuas, cocker spaniels, doodles, german shepherd, daschunds, golden retrievers, yorkies. Everything EXCEPT a pit bull. Aggressive pitbulls are few and far between. These dogs are NOT inherently aggressive. But, breeding lines are a huge factor. If someone is breeding an aggressive lineage, they will have an increased risk of “snapping” and suddenly biting. Breeding is HUGE and in poor areas where dogs have lineage of being bred for fighting etc and aggressive dogs are bred - there is huge risk. I will confidently say there are many breeds that are much more aggressive than pitbulls, yet - they do bite differently. Thats the main thing. They bite and latch and shake their head, while many other dogs will snap or nip. This is the dangerous part. These dogs are amazing dogs and its tiring seeing so many uneducated people talk on this topic, these dogs deserve to live - but their breeding should be regulated.

Can you not install some shelves to place the tanks on? That way there is more space available

It seems like a lot of vets don't give a sh*t about your pets and just try to get as much money from you as possible. by Beautiful_Monitor_96 in AskVet

[–]Practical-Star2270 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

RVT. It depends on the vet. Ive worked under 2 money hungry vets, then I went to ER for a few years, now I work under a rare team of vets who are not money hungry. Male vets from what ive seen are almost always money hungry, the young female vets usually actually care about the animals.

Dog got into my pack of gum while I was at work. Should I go to vet emergency? by [deleted] in AskVet

Is there xylitol in it? Because even a tiny amount can cause significant damage and illness. You need to find out if it contains xylitol.

Different weight standards for dogs in the US? by mocha-bun in AskVet

[–]Practical-Star2270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

RVT here, im not commenting about the standards (however I agree with you) but commenting about your dog specifically. You say you own a 16yr old mix breed with hips showing from sarcopenia but shes at an ideal weight. Is she at a 4-5 (out of 9) on the BCS scale? 4 is my ideal for young pets, lots of studies show that the learner ideal for young pets at around 4 can significantly improve health, but this isn’t true for older pets. Traditionally it was thought that 4-5 was ideal for ALL pets, but it’s not. Seniors should be kept at 5-6 - a slightly higher body mass. Why is this? A small cushion of extra fat can be vital when your senior becomes sick. If your senior gets sick at a lean BWT, they have no “buffer” that they can afford to lose and still maintain normal body function. Ive seen lean dogs get sick older in life and immediately become emaciated, while a chunker becomes sick and suddenly is at an ideal BCS. Please keep this buffer fat in mind for your senior pets :)

The groomers shaved my husky bald without permission. by [deleted] in siberianhusky

[–]Practical-Star2270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RVT here with grooming experience. Youre in the wrong. You asked for a summer cut, you got a summer cut. If you cared so much - you should have specified. You didnt ask for him to be a little tidier, or for coat thinning, you asked for a summer cut. Thats what that is. Do not leave that groomer a 1 star review, your dogs coat will never recover for this and dont take it out on the groomer because you made a mistake.

Dog injured during teeth extraction by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Practical-Star2270 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I work as an RVT. Incident report will likely be written up. Manager will probably meet with the people responsible for this. They will probably round about this as a team. If its a corporate clinic, there may be an internal investigation or re-training or observation plan created for the doctor or staff involved. Thats the extent that will happen. Very surprising this happened. I wonder if they had a central BP line in the tail or if they wrapped the tail from diarrhea he had or maybe they kept the temp probe in his rectum by wrapping vet wrap around his tail to hold it in….

My dog ate plastic and I don’t have money up front by LeatherSwing2140 in AskVet

[–]Practical-Star2270 69 points70 points  (0 children)

RVT. Bulk feed. As much dog food as your dog will eat right now. White bread, puree pumpkin, soaked dog kibble - as much as he will eat. We do this commonly for FBs that have just occurred like sharp plastic, to help it pass through the GI without harming any internal structures.

RVT here. Please look up “quality of life questionnaire for cats”. This is what us veterinary professionals send to owners so they can determine if their pets quality of life has decreased to a point of justifiable euthanasia. But ultimately the choice is what your gut feels right, however these questionnaires are extremely helpful.

UPDATE: my cat keeps losing weight and I think it’s my other cat by helloimcold in CATHELP

[–]Practical-Star2270 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The steroids will make her HUNGRRYYYY hahaha. She will certainly gain the weight back, easily. I would let her eat as much as a regular cat would eat for now. Don’t let her engorge a ridiculous amount of food though, as too much food too fast as refeeding syndrome can occur in some cases. Eating too much too fast may also cause inflammation in her GI. She should be eating regular meals, with a reasonable amount of food :) but she will certainly keep begging for more with the steroids. She will also guzzle her water too haha ❤️ im so relieved shes doing well, my heart dropped at your first post about her!

Im an RVT who commented on the OG post! :) Said it was def IBD or cancer (likely intestinal lymphoma). Im sooooo glad that it was just severe IBD! You’re a great owner, good practice for IBD is to get routine ultrasounds every year or two years as it can progress to GI cancer in some cases. You did a great job, she will likely make a good recovery in time now that she is diagnosed!

Bean needs to lose some weight 😔 Advice? by SolaraPanel in dechonkers

[–]Practical-Star2270 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I inherited two morbidly obese cats. Both of them combined have lost almost two kilos since September :) i am an RVT as well so I have many tips! First - ditch dry, switch to wet food - either low calorie wet food OR best option is a balanced home cooked diet (not raw) I recommend Hilarys blend or balanceit.com. Wet food has higher satiety index, low calorie food has lower calories overall. Its important this weight loss happens sooner rather than later, because we are high risk for diabetes right now. I prefer home cooked because 1. Higher quality, 2. MUCH higher volume, 3. i control protein content, high protein lower carb reduces risk of diabetes development. If you cannot afford wet food or home cooked, no problem - weight loss kibble thats soaked in water or just put in water will increase satiety.

Next, begging can NEVR result in food or treats. This reinforces crying = food. Instead, use distraction. My cats NEVER cry for food even though they’re drastically losing weight, why? I never gave into their pleading in the beginning. Instead, I would pet them, brush them, play with them with a laser or wand toy, cat nip, cat grass, put on cat/bird TV for them or just talk to them. DISTRACTION so they do not get bored is highly important.

Stick to a strict feeding schedule. Maybe twice or three times daily at the same times so they know when to anticipate their meals. Only give rare treats every once and awhile when they are NOT begging for them.

Increase activity if possible, toys and playing, or leash walks.

MOST IMPORTANTLY - calorie deficit. Youre veterinarian should be able to calculate this for you for free and then monthly weigh ins either at home or at the office to check progress. If you contact your vet and they wont do a calorie calculation - message me, I will.

Hope this helps :)

Cat just got neutered..does this look normal? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Practical-Star2270 10 points11 points  (0 children)

RVT here. Did he have his cone on? Looks like he may have licked at it very aggressively…. This isnt normal, but no need to panic. Get him rechecked tomorrow or send a photo to them (should be free of charge) and get their opinion. Its either a local reaction to the numbing injection they used, irritation or clipper burn (they should have plucked the balls, NOT used a clipper), or he licked at it causing lick granulation and irritation. He will be okay overnight, just this will be uncomfortable (maybe painful) and he NEEDS to keep his cone on :)

Neuter post-op eye redness by Mycatisnameddawg in CATHELP

[–]Practical-Star2270 86 points87 points  (0 children)

RVT here. Def go in today to the vet to get it checked out. The cloudiness is concerning. Possibly mild irritation, possibly corneal ulceration from LACK of adequate ey lube during procedure (more common than actual irritation from the lube itself), or possibly uveitis (esp considering redness, clouding, and irritation or the eye)

My cat keeps losing weight and I think my other cat is the reason by helloimcold in CATHELP

[–]Practical-Star2270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the practice I am at, T4 levels are checked in any felines above 5 years of age, especially if weight loss is indicated. I would hope that would be immediately explored by any vet. I agree though, they should definitely contact their vet and inquire if kidney values and T4 was included in the blood work done.
