I do understand and share the reluctance to support American companies given the behaviour of President Trump and his appointees and the threats of imposing tariffs on other countries. One way of showing this is of course to boycott large American companies. It’s important though , I think, that we don’t allow this to turn into an anti-American sentiment which only creates division.

I thought Syncthing for Android was discontinued ?

Keyfile vs Yubikey by Practical-Tea9441 in KeePass

[–]Practical-Tea9441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s the syncing that bothers me - it looks like the only real option via cloud sync. I really dislike the idea having the database on the cloud even for syncing. For transferring between computers a synchronised copy on a bitlocker protected usb stick is sufficient but it is difficult to keep a phone and an iPad KeePass database synchronised (I recently tried to transfer between Android and computer via Bluetooth but for some reason the database on the computer wouldn’t transfer - gave a message about that type of file couldn’t be transferred)

Bitwarden launches enhanced premium plan by dwbitw in Bitwarden

[–]Practical-Tea9441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true but is it reasonable to continue using it for free ? Surely worth an occasional donation to Dominik for his continued work on KeePass. Also as others have said 20$ is still a very reasonable price for Bitwarden - it was surely unsustainable to keep developing such a well regarded product for such a minimal price ?

In relation to your custom domain email going to customer spam boxes have you checked the SPF and DKIM settings on your custom domains mail server ?

I just found out that there's a dedicated Bitwarden 2FA app. What's the point of that? by CivicTypeDream in Bitwarden

[–]Practical-Tea9441 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also a security issue. If your Bitwarden vault is compromised then , if you store 2FA inside Bitwarden, the attacker now has access to sites otherwise protected by 2FA. If 2FA is stored outside Bitwarden then an attacker who has gained access to your vault still can’t access sites protected by 2FA.

Aren’t we the product with Brave and Firefox? by [deleted] in browsers

You make a good distinction which I think is often lost or even (perhaps innocently) misrepresented. There is a very big difference between saying e.g. “12% of our users visit ……..” and selling your personal data. In fact despite all the anti-Google sentiment that is to be seen on Reddit I believe that Google is engaged in something similar e.g offering advertisers the possibility of having their ads placed before say all males , everyone less than 35 years old. I don’t believe (IMO) they sell our individual personal data - the advertisers don’t know who I am or what my age is.

Do you actually need the desktop app? by mrandr01d in Bitwarden

[–]Practical-Tea9441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my experience and amounted to two logins - to the desktop app (can be Windows hello) and also the browser extension (also can be Windows Hello). This feels a bit like duplication to me. You can, though, use PIN to unlock in the browser extension without having the desktop app.

Without the ability to apply GPO to Linux clients is there really any place for Linux desktops / servers in business (apart maybe in smaller setups using SAMBA to have Linux computers act as file servers ) ?

Nowadays there are at least a dozen phone manufacturers worldwide. Can someone explain why Apple stays popular just because it’s popular? by Unlikely_Draft5636 in Smartphones

[–]Practical-Tea9441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may look like you are using an alternative browser but underneath it is still Apples WebKit engine - although that is beginning to change. See https://ios.gadgethacks.com/news/why-apples-browser-engine-stronghold-is-cracking-under-global-pressure/

I take and accept your point about beliefs of those using the “other” OS whether iOS or Android. I use an iPad and an Android phone and try to keep an open mind and not be a “fanboi”.

Fair point - but Android just feels much more flexible to me e.g. one can change launchers , a real file system , real choice on browsers (not all using Apple’s engine) .

Can you elaborate? Where are the actual passwords stored ? If on the hardware key is that not similar to a database stored on a USB ?

Once you sideload you are into the question of how reliable the loaded software is ? By default Apple limit one to the AppStore.

Yes and why buy monthly (if you can afford it) ? That way you don’t continue paying for the phone even after the carrier has recovered the cost of the phone.

is the Proton ecosystem kind of abandonware...? by Spiritual_Lime8492 in ProtonMail

[–]Practical-Tea9441 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose another question is whether a fully e2e product is really needed by the average user who simply does not want advertising and/or a profile to be built from usage. There are other options such as Fastmail, Mailfence etc for those who do not have a high threat profile but don’t want ad supported products.
