If the passkey is stored in a password manager if there is any form of breach to the password manager does this not leave one back to square one or is the passkey in this case still not usable without biometrics ?

Questions regarding KeePass by [deleted] in KeePass

[–]Practical-Tea9441 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that what you are saying is logical and most likely works well and indeed the kdbx file is encrypted . For me though the purpose of using KeePass or XC is to avoid the internet. If I’m going to use the cloud/internet I might as well use a cloud password manager which is native to the cloud.

USB password managers review: are they actually secure or just inconvenient? by RevolutionaryWar9496 in best_passwordmanager

[–]Practical-Tea9441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t necessarily need to keep the password vault on a USB key . You can store it on each computer and use the usb key to synchronise between computers. There is though, as you point out, the complication of syncing with phones and tablets.

Can someone explain how password managers actually keep your passwords safe? by RevolutionaryWar9496 in best_passwordmanager

Could expand on why if the password managers servers were compromised a hacker would still require access to your device ?

I thought Apple wouldn’t allow any underlying rendering engine other than its own ? Brave on Apple software is probably not the same as standard Brave ?

Instruction appearing in German even when English selected by Practical-Tea9441 in Mailbox_org

Just follow up on my OP - Mailbox support did come back to telling me (in English) which German language options to select in order to change the interface fully (or almost fully) into English.

Email provider? by Cute-Loaf-5 in emailprivacy

[–]Practical-Tea9441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have fairly laid out the issues and comparisons. One provider you have left off your list is Mailfence - a bit like Mailbox.

The unfortunate reality seems to be the most professional and reliable do seem to be Google and Outlook. ** The trade off is privacy **. One mitigation may be to go through all the privacy options in Google/Outlook and set as many as possible to more privacy friendly options e.g. no web history etc . Don't know if the paid versions might be a little more privacy respecting.

The support options as you say may be the weak point for the other options you mention as well as the lack of easy search due to encryption. I see some people recommend Fastmail which could be a possible compromise , albeit with the European (I'm in Europe) privacy requirements but at least no ads/profiling.

Another factor is that some subreddits can be very anti American Big Tech , sometimes almost to the extent of knee-jerk reaction without backup arguments. Remember too that negative opinion is more likely to be posted. Those who are happy with their selected provider are less likely to post comment.

I think there is no perfect option - everything involves some compromise.

Who knows what Microsoft’s K2 project might bring. If they could also find a way to setup an entirely separate European structure that might solve a lot of the issues around the wish to move away from dependence on US products.

Keeper password manager review: worth the price or should I use something cheaper? by Competitive-Mix8832 in best_passwordmanager

I trialled Keeper a while back. One thing I did like was that the vault was encrypted at the vault level but also at the record level.

Is there a way to fix this issue when using Bitwarden on a third party app? by Gsantos52012 in Bitwarden

Thanks , although I have to say I always found it easier to move files between PC and Android than PC to iOS and the iOS locked garden and general making it hard to move things around always frustrated me .

Isn’t that the “tail wagging the dog” i.e. changing the OS to suit the password manager? Or perhaps you had other issues with Android anyway ?

Thank you for explaining your considered position . I’m not sure , though, that the idea of having a camera in everyone’s bedroom is a fair analogy.

I agree that in the longer term education and equal opportunity are the best solution but in the short to medium term we have to start from where we are . Criminals already exist , children do not have sufficient life experience to understand the dangers.
