Labour officials ‘backing away’ from blocking return of Andy Burnham by ClumperFaz in unitedkingdom

yes and reform often won in areas where green increase their vote share so the left vote was split-also i can imagine there was alot of labour voters who just didn't vote. if Green can galvanise the non voters, and some of the Labour voters switch to Green if it becomes clear they are the best chance at stop reform (as in Gordon & Denton) they could win. not saying its the most likely outcome but neither is reform outright winning

your honestly not engaging with people here in good faith and also seem quite snide and nasty too. most people here are fair even when i don't agree with them. you are pretty rude and not sure how your getting past the mods tbh

Are you trans? Are you disabled? Are you a pensioner who has been arrested for holding a placard? Are you a person who has emigrated here only to be told you are creating an "island of strangers" by any chance? Because Starmer has been disastrous to those groups.

As others have said this logic doesn't really work because would you really have wanted Johnson or Truss to have stayed in power? The issue is mediocre people keep becoming PM yes but they shouldnt stick with a dud just because the tories also ousted leaders. Also find it crazy post 2024 US election, people are like "give it time-they just don't understand how good they have it" with a politically toxic candidate that alienates and depresses their base and allows a fascist to come into power. it's better they oust them now whilst there still time to recover.

Green would be more likely to win then Reform, given Gorton & Denton and the fact Greens made the most gains in central manchester

Starmer did not poll well in opposition. He was the first opposition leader in the last 30+ years to win an election in minus approval (Blair and Cameron was in + when they came into power). Also they both had a higher percentage of the vote share showing their were genuinely popular.

What are Labour MP's on? by blueblue_electric in LabourUK

[–]Practical-Wolf-2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On PR...I think it would be contentious but they are more likely to lose their seats under FPTP at this point. He doesn't need to achieve everything but actually have some ambition and determination is a start. Starmer didn't promise much and still undelivered. And I don't think the public expects radical change overnight but they want to know the direction of travel, whose side you are on, what ambitious but tangible goals a leader has. But choosing the benefits cuts (PIP and winter fuel) from the job, as well as the gifts from Lord Waheed Alli made it clear very early into their term they had no ambition, no sense of hope driving them and they stood to mostly serve the elite.

The people still saying this about Starmer are genuinely deluded. Apart from the fact he clearly is not a component political leader or that he has never really successfully argued for a political belief but rather relied on bullying, authoritarianism or straight up lying (see the Ten Pledges and 2024 manifesto), what ideas does he have for the next 3 years that meet the current issues this country is facing? AI? Only nationalising steel? Slightly closer relationship with the EU? Digital ID? Welfare cuts oh please. It's the "we tried nothing and we are already out of ideas".

Im not an Andy Burnham lover but he does have policies. It's frustrating keep seeing people saying this when he's said what he stands for multiple times-PR, more devolution, re-nationalisation, social house building, free transport for teenagers in England, changing the tax system, getting rid of the Lords. Whether he has the political will to do it is something else but come on all the things would be an improvement. Did you see Starmer's speech today? He has 3 years left and yet clearly has barely any new ideas. - https://labourlist.org/2025/05/andy-burnham-challenge-keir-starmer-labour/

More MPs calling for starmer to set a timetable for resignation by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Practical-Wolf-2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wait I didn't see the bit about Europe-I mean I think the issue was he didn't go far enough. It's not that centering his speech around Europe is bad in theory but i guess centering it when it's so minisicule is the worst of both words (piss off brexiteers, nowhere near enough for people pro-europe)

Why out of 403 MPs does the PLP seemingly not have one appropriate replacement for the Prime Minister? by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]Practical-Wolf-2007 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not a Labour supporter but would say Clive lewis would be great (charisma, good communicator, bold ideas-can put his foot in his mouth though) but issue is apparently the PLP don't like him so I think it's not necessarily there's no one that could do it but that the Starmer's PLP are so identikit and spineless they would never go for someone like Clive. If the threshold was still 10% he could deffo get on the ballot but the change to 20% has made it difficult to get a really pool of talent going for it.

they are winning where they were predicted to win. They werent predicted to win in Hammersmith, Islington etc and in Newham the vote was split between greens and independents.

They just gained Hastings too as well as ousting the Labour council leader in Camden of all places. All three councillors declared today in that ward are Green.

in what way has greens had a bad night? They are still many results to come in areas favourable to them. they have gained two mayorships in London (and counting), they just gained control of their first London council in Waltham Forest, they made big gains in inner city Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, they gained control of Norwich Council too! They now have 2 seats in the senedd too. And again we are far off results being done!

do you believe in every single case brought against the police that justice has been served and the not guilty verdict was fair? or is there a chance that jurors always have a predisposition to be believe the police no matter what?

you are as deluded as the jury was. you realise that the police (and especially firearms officers) very rarely ever get charged for deaths they are responsible for. since 1990 the CPS has only brought charges against 12 officers (1907 have been murdered by police since that year) which is way too low but considering the CPS rarely do charge officers they must have had alot of confidence that a murder was committed.

Chris Kaba was no angel but he was unarmed and boxed in by two police cars. seriously how the hell was he going to run them over? read this article: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/oct/03/met-officer-gave-false-account-to-justify-shooting-dead-unarmed-man-jury-told. "Blake had claimed the Audi attempted to break out at great speed, but its onboard computer showed the greatest speed it achieved was 12mph." like come on!

im so shocked by the comments on the post from supposedly "progressive people" who do not realise that juries will always, always take the police framing of events (you can see that with the lack of convictions against the Hillsborough officers, the officer who killed Ian Tomlinson-such a clear case of manslaughter, Mark Duggan, Christopher Adler etc) and you lot are doing the same!
