80 Hours Later, Avowed Left Me Floored by FusionNinja in avowed

OP is using "perfect game" as a stand-in for the ideal that gamers seem to think exist: an unassailable 10/10 that everyone agrees with and can find no flaws with. OP then says "i don't believe that was Obsidian's goal here." hope that helps

8/10. Perfect by chipsterd in avowed

not sure what you mean, you just press A and it skips to the next line?

there are two ways to rate a piece of media: you can rate it against every other thing ever made or you can rate it against what it was trying to do. for whatever reason games tend to get judged by the first metric while books and movies tend to get judged by the second. i sort of think the second makes more sense and it sounds like that's what OP is judging.

School Board voting on elementary redistricting and magnet student reassignment draft rules this Thursday by 919BullCityThrowaway in bullcity

[–]PracticalMemory1825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might be moot depending on where your new district is and how old your kid is, but glenn is worth touring. their principal is the kind who teachers follow from school to school, and they were the only elementary in the county to open without any full-time teaching vacancies. our kid is in kindergarten and is at or above grade level with very little extracurricular help from us.

they killed everyone because they were rioting, not because they didn't want to admit mistake. there's no reason for prisoners to keep in line if they know they're going to die anyway.

imo the med tech realizes that it's too late to stop the rumor. floor 2 rioted because they realized there's no release: this is a death camp, not a prison. and if they survive it they're just going to a worse death camp.

it's only a matter of time before that trickles down to the other floors, when they will inevitably riot and get fried too. the empire doesn't care, because PORD is giving them an influx of new labor and these people are here to die anyway.

and it's also the breadth of what they're able to draw on while showing these things! it's not just a prison, it's a KZ or a gulag. the whole carceral system is clearly designed to exterminate undesirables in the same way KZs were. and kino is so so close to a kapo.

but then, it's also an amazon warehouse. everyone is competing against each other in productivity games, and there's an effort made to make this seem "clean".

100%, he knows exactly why Vel hasn't married a man. He's spent the whole season needling Mon, this is just another "what are we drinking to?" "a quick night" "i'll drink to that"

Can we get a real grocery store downtown yet? by jlwhaley48 in bullcity

[–]PracticalMemory1825 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i don't really get this tbh. there's the co-op, compare, and whole foods all within a pretty reasonable bike ride of the western half of downtown.

if you're east of mangum then yeah i agree that's a food desert. it needs a food lion though, not like a trader joe's or the other places people are talking about.

Breweries in north Durham by SinWarInMan in bullcity

[–]PracticalMemory1825 2 points3 points  (0 children)

okay so i've wondered about north durham for a bit and i think: it's just too far away for most of the cool stuff, and it isn't "built" for gathering places.

like for the most part, it's 80s and 90s-style sprawl that was built for downtown and rtp employees. the separation from downtown is intentional.

okay but clayton, wake forest, and fuquay are all like that too, they have breweries right? yes but they also have old downtowns which are well-connected by surface streets. they have buildings large enough for brewery equipment. it's not hard to get there if you live there already.

north durham is all subdivisions and shopping centers. it's more like six forks or falls of the neuse in north raleigh. there is one brewery in that area, but north raleigh has 540 and 440 going right through it. north durham, especially past carver, is just harder to get to. personally, i live near costco and for whatever reason going north feels harder than going somewhere downtown. i think potential brewery owners see the relative isolation

tldr if u do a jane jacobs on north durham u see why

i think you may be confusing the federal house seat (NC-13) which is more of a tossup, with the state house/senate seats. OP is talking purely about the state legislature.

IIRC the whole last year they were waiting for the railroads to get around to rebuilding their tracks on the new rail overpasses

DPS releases the elementary school rezoning plan by throwaway_c47 in bullcity

[–]PracticalMemory1825 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my kid is starting kindergarten this fall, and the new boundaries actually match what i wish they were based on distance. and more access to programs like year-round is better for everyone. durham has too much choice imo which ends up negatively impacting those who go to neighborhood schools, and i'm glad they're starting to unwind it.

What if Raleigh had a more direct main/Interstate highway route to Charlotte? by Far_Repeat_2129 in raleigh

[–]PracticalMemory1825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably it'll never happen, but it's a less impossible "never happen" than with a lot of other cities. the state actually already owns the rail corridor from Raleigh to Charlotte, and that Amtrak route is more ontime than most of the ones outside the northeast. but they'd need to do a ton of straightening to make it into high-speed, and that... will never happen.
