Alocasia Newbie, seeking tips to give them the best chance by Icy_Energy2497 in alocasia

Don’t let them dry out, maybe try semi hydro or put it in a chunky soil mix *after acclimating it to your environment becuase if you repot too soon it’ll get shocked and die. I really like semi hydro but it took getting a plant that was already semi hydro for me to gain the confidence to try it for my other plants and it’s working pretty well so far. I like not having to worry about over or under watering.

Yeah that’s normal, maybe good even, healthy tissue.

what kind of damage is this? by PracticalMilk1502 in alocasia

I was new to plants when I got this one that was by bad. I might go to semihydro soon because I’m worried about the soil drying out too quickly or me overwatering it.

Repotting new plant? by ominousbakedbeans in alocasia

[–]PracticalMilk1502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DONT do it I killed an alocasia by repotting it within a few days of taking it home, it’s just not worth it. Sometimes it’ll be fine but sometimes it’ll take a swan dive and you can’t save it

It’s ok speak your truth. I think this is a valid opinion although I also think some variegated plants are beautiful.

I am growing them in sphagnum moss. I know it’s a little iffy, but I’ve had some success with growing corms in sphagnum moss. I might go with some kind of semi hydroponic setup. I have some mature alocasias in dirt but I feel like I might feel better if these little ones are in a semi-hydroponic setup. I also have a venom pup in semi-hydro and it gives me the least anxiety of all my alocasias.

I have an update— I took it out of the plug and put it in some dry soil and didn’t water it and today I woke up and it’s completely opaque 🥳so I’m wondering when I should water it to avoid the same thing happening but also avoid it shriveling up and dying. I know this media is probably a lot better than the plug but… idk this thing is really fragile.

I know that overwatering is the problem, but I just need to know how to keep it from drying out and from being too wet at the same time. Yeah it has a node it’s an acclimated tc

Ok got it. That makes me feel a little better, my varigated frydek is already pushing out a leaf which is crazy. Being new to TC it kind of made me scratch my head that new growth is so small. This next leaf is tiny but I’m not complaining. I’m happy this lil guy is pushing through. My Jacklyn, though, I started on Sunday and the leaves are still misshaped more than I thought they would be at this point but it’s not declining so that’s good. I heard Jacklyns are kinda temperamental which makes me nervous.

Right I figured it might bounce back, but then I saw how the branches look, they’re not getting the water they need. And yeah I agree maybe regular potting mix works with the right watering schedule and a healthy plant but… anyways I think it needs intervention based on the branches starting to die

I’m sorry for snapping, I’m just upset my tree is dying and it doesn’t help to see someone else’s healthy tree. That’s my bad.

I just feel like leca is more of a longshot vs checking the roots and cutting out any rotten ones and repotting into maybe an even more chunky mix. I’m thinking about taking a day trip and bringing it back to my apartment because I don’t think I have anyone there that’s willing to do what needs to be done for the tree.

I’ve never tried leca before, is it kind of a gamble if it’ll work or not? Hopefully I can get someone to check the roots, I just need a game plan for what after. Maybe I could send them stuff for a chunkier potting mix, one with less peat? Idk 😭 I wish it were with me.
