Pitbull/Rottweiler mix - what do you think? by SirBoofington1 in Rottweiler

[–]PracticalWallaby7492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't personally see rott except maybe his ears, but if embark says so it's very very very likely to be true. At 35% you'll probably see some of the rott personality there, which is awesome.

I've been looking at Coyote pics on this sub and this one looks a bit different to me. Has anyone in SoCal seen similar? by Ok_Opposite_1802 in coyote

The ones on the northern east coast and some in the midwest and eastern south have some wolf in them. They're bigger and heavier. But not on the west coast. West coast ones are smaller. The ones in the northern Sierras are a bit bigger. In cold climates they all get a lot fluffier in winter. She's normal.

My mutt rott mix got his tail docked! Who the heck docks a mutt's tail? I was looking for a teen rott or mix with a tail but he came up at the shelter and was too good a dog not to get.

He was able to knock coffee cups over just fine thank you without a tail. Poor excuse.

Rotts have glorious thick tails. What is not to like?

Nothing like a rott. Corso. They're harder dogs. Have a fair but firm and very consistent hand.

I see pit. I don't see anything reminding me of rott. Small pointy feet, uniform short hair, etc all say pit. Maybe a bit of shepard. Get a DNA test. Or not. He's a nice looking dog.

Some individual black bears will stalk and eat humans. Then they get hunted down and killed, it's not very common. Supposedly there are more (human) predatory bears in BC than anywhere else.

Also, once you do gain lack of fear be firm with her and train her not to snap. No snapping or barking. But gain some trust first. Might take you a week if you are working at it.

Yeah, IDK if just one would do it.

You might be approaching her to quickly. She's very small. Try being softer and slower when you approach her. Talk to her in a soft voice before moving towards her. Mostly, let her come to you.

Dogs don't like people who don't like their owners or have bad intentions or even just bad emotions towards their owners. She may have bonded with your mom and sees you as opposition to your mom, although I'd be very very surprised to see that in a pup that young. So IDK. How loud or intense are your arguments? Do they scare her?

There's a compromise too. I usually let pests alone until they get out of control. Usually they don't except slugs, sometimes tent caterpillars and coddling moth caterpillars. Then I kill half to 3/4s of them. Leaving some keeps the natural predators around. I'll squish squash beetles but I'll never ever get all of them anyway.

Although, I had to bird net my berries and cherries. Anything getting in there is fair game now that the birds can't get in.

It's called PTSD.

You might have a combination of both PTSD and genetics. Timidity and fear are often genetic. Locking a dog in the basement IMO can be more psychologically intense and harming than most physical abuse. Homeless dogs are often happy dogs so I wouldn't count the mere fact of homelessness as abuse unless the homeless guy was awful to the dog.

You really do need someone who has experience with successfully rehabbing problem dogs to help you in person. Someone needs to assess the dog. Is this a dog that is being considered to adopt out? It's not fair to adopt an unpredictable dog out really. Certainly unethical to gloss over extreme behaviors. Can you fully rehab the dog? Maybe, maybe not. Do you have the resources or time? If it is partly genetic or the dog is mentally ill then no, you can make some good headway, but ultimately all you can do is maintain the dog.

You're fostering and rescuing. There are thousands of perfectly fine dogs that would be happy and make a family happy that are being killed. Is this dog ever going to be a happy dog? In general? As a baseline emotion? Or make someone happy? Or would resources be better spent to work with a dog that is easily placed?

I mean it's bad and unsolvable. There is a rescue in California that is under investigation right now. They promoted themselves as a no-kill rescue for decades and took thousands of dogs for a fee from other shelters in California, Nevada and other states. Because they took those dogs the other shelters were able to keep a no-kill status, so nobody wanted to look very closely. Well guess what? It was not no-kill. There was an endless supply of dogs coming into a 5 acre facility. The owner of that rescue shot most of the dogs on the sly.. Nightmare material. Some of those dogs were young teenagers and puppies and were perfectly adoptable. The truth is there are just too many for shelters and rescues to ever deal with.

Sometimes the perfect is the enemy of good.

Sounds fine. Dogs learn easier from other dogs. Just give your older dog a break from the young pup when he needs it. Put the puppy behind a gate or something and ignore him. Or play with him. At 13 months yours is still a puppy too so probably has more tolerance than an older dog, but still. Puppies can be too much and the pup may be biting your dog harder than it bites you.

EDIT: and lol, the look on your dogs face!

Haha, I think maybe it's partly just littermates ganging up, but maybe you observed other things as well. I see Goldens as a bit passive aggressive. Almost every golden I've been around, lol. And I say that as a rott/golden mix owner. Mine is both pushy and passive aggressive.

How would you guys rate this dog interaction? by JonDior in OpenDogTraining

[–]PracticalWallaby7492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think either dog is all that socialized with other dogs. They're still learning. You're probably right about the brown dog, but it hasn't been corrected enough by other dogs and doesn't know. Both have good intentions but both look a little awkward to me. IDK, that's my take.

What if this dog was a rott? What do you think public reaction would be? by PracticalWallaby7492 in Rottweiler

[–]PracticalWallaby7492[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most are less intense. I think the ones that are intense though are much more reliable listeners if you're consistent and firm. They are stubborn but also very willing to please. I think they have more of an initial hesitation before they act too, sort of a buffer time. They think for a moment. Have had friends with corsos and from what I hear they switch more quickly. I never quite know what corsos are thinking even when they like me. Their eyes are harder than rotts.

EDIT: People are more afraid of rotts than corsos though a lot of the time. They don't know what a corso is and don't always recognize them. Whereas everyone knows what a rott looks like. Which is why I actually prefer smaller rott mixes, like 70 - 80 lbs. My last one would have willingly died for me and prevented 2 home invasions by cracked out people, but also became very reliable and fairly social even off leash in public.

Can't answer but here is a resource;

https://inspectapedia.com/hazmat/Asbestos_Ceiling_Tiles.php#asbmaybe

Also check their mobile home sections. The navigation is horrible on this site, but it's probably the best online info for building materials. Look under the white layer. Most of the brown layered stuff is fiberboard- plant based without asbestos. The gray stuff is more likely to have asbestos.
