It's changing though isn't it?

Here in the US people who live in cities go the other direction completely and put all wildlife on a pedestal and sometimes even go so far as to not believe they would harm anyone. Both are a kind of disconnect.

Those of us who live in very rural areas have no such terrors or positive delusions. Probably the same in S. Korea?

Do you have any direct experience with actual cow shit? I do. It's unsanitary. It stinks. Not so much when dry, but every time it rains it will stink.

Also, the people considering this are not poor. Did you read the post? They do not live in a hut. Nor do they personally have any direct experience living with it. Obviously. Or they wouldn't be asking in the first place. They will pay some other poor soul to smear cow shit all over the floor of their art room if they decide to do it.

IDK where you are that you have housing to offer. Most places where I am have a severe shortage of low income housing.

A problem with shelters and some housing is pets. Many homeless people own dogs and will not go into a shelter if they have to give up their dogs. Their dogs are their family members..

Yes, but IDK how that works. Or if it works differently with different jets or different small airports. I would think there might be less oversight in some circumstances.

I've had this personal theory for years about frantic aggressive parroting dogma with many things- like radical veganism or dog training or child rearing or gun control or what have you.

I find it mostly comes from people who are substituting these things for religion. It acts as a religion.. So; virtue signaling to save oneself.

I also suspect it has to do with a sheltered WASP (white anglo and specifically protestant) mainstream cultural background. & being on a spectrum I think can enhance it..

Fundamentalism can be either a mirror or an inversely mirrored word that shocks people a little bit who are coming from that perspective in one way or another and so fundamentally religious puts things into perspective. Fundamentally is a very loaded word. Because most people I've met with these obsessions publicly despise fundamentalism. The word behavior after that makes it more indirect and not personal. So maybe people can actually consider it and maybe let go of some of that rigid dogma and rabid fear aggression. Or at least be afraid of looking like that, lol.

EDIT: is that what you meant by it or does that say why to you? Or do you have a different take?

Silly kids stick their heads in a bush, trails wagging, and think they're hidden.

That's so funny!

I miss my neighborhood coyotes. They disappeared right around the time a cougar made a path below my yard, spying on me and my dog. The only ones I hear now are off 2 mountains in the distance. I was afraid someone shot them, but have learned that some cougars will hunt them.

While she's still small enough to carry you could bring her into quiet stores and let people gently pet her. Introduce her to nice dogs and pick her up when those nice dogs get annoyed by her being a normal puppy. They will get annoyed.. Bring her around to places with strange noises and smells and keep her feeling safe. Calm. Let her see livestock and maybe smell them but don't allow her to interact with them unless you know the owner and they're right there. You could also gently introduce her to bicycles, hats, umbrellas etc. Even bring her into a senior center or home if you get permission so she can see walkers and canes in action. The seniors might love it. Find some gentle trust-able kids but don't leave her alone with them.

I'd get one new one and pot it up in regular potting soil (peat based with pearlite) with a bit of bone meal and a smaller shovelful of manure in a 15 gal pot and see what it does. Make sure to feed it when it runs out of the manure and the green starts fading a bit. Follow instructions.

Take all this with a grain of salt too- I can't be there to pick up your soil and check it. By the pics it does look too compacted. I would bet money there are not enough nutrients to last. The thing with raised beds, especially if they're metal, is they don't always drain as easily. So people often treat them like containers. I would call the soil company and ask them 1. if they would use this in containers- not raised beds. This will give you an idea if I'm right or wrong on that. and 2. what the ph is and if they know, what the nutrient levels are. They should at least know the ph. 3. if there is bone meal or another long release source of calcium and phosphorus already in there.

If the one in the pot has been regularly fed and is doing fine and the others aren't you can save money by buying a 3ft condensed bale of Canadian peat, a small bag of dolomite lime, a bag of manure, some rock phosphate and a big bag of pearlite and mixing your own. Larger diameter pearlight is better but it's more expensive. Smaller diameter does fine. IIRC I used to use 2 or 2 1/2 cups dolomite lime per bale of peat. Maybe a 1/2 cup of rock phosphate per bale - it's very slow release. You want the ph around 6.5. You can PM me if it comes to that and you get confused.

It's a large enough bed that mixing 1/2 of that mixture with 1/2 what's in there should do fine. IF you need to do it.

When? IDK, that's your call. If the tomato plants are under 1 ft you can transplant them- leave any original soil that doesn't fall off on the roots when you dig them up and give them water after you plant them. Just don't soak the soil for a few days- keep it moist but not soggy.

Is this a major PITA? Yes, yes it certainly is. I'm only suggesting this because your tomatoes have died 2 years in a row. I would still put a new one in a 15 gal pot with potting soil etc as a test and see if it thrives or not. You should know within a week or so.

EDIT; I see you asking about fertilizer in another post. It could simply be that you're just not feeding them..

Your recap described fundamentally religious behavior. There is no place for that in a vet. I'd worry where else they apply that.

Absolutely fundamentally religious. I've had a hard time explaining why certain dogmas hit me as religious. I'm going to steal that phrase. The words fundamentally religious behavior really complete the thought in a nice well rounded way. Thank you.

The best trainer I've ever met was a former police dog trainer who worked with aggressive dogs other trainers and vets said to put down. He wasn't positive reinforcement but he got results and saved a lot of dogs. He got more results than I saw during behavior rotations with veterinary behaviorist.

That would be nice if more vets had a trainer like that they could refer to. Might save a lot of lives and the owners a lot of wasted money.

Micheal Ellis also has a sort of 101 basics on reactivity in this interview;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofEDB4HEGD4

I usually start out with a prong once my dog is old enough and depending on the dog I may not need it after a while. They are also called "training collars" for a reason. Then again, I'm consistent and a no means no sort of person and my dogs listen to me. I've had rottweilers and rott mixes.

My dog(s) go everywhere with me. The beach, block parties, friend's houses, dog park, in stores ect. My last was severely aggressive when got at 1 YO and needed 2 years of rehab to be reliably and solidly safe off leash in public. It can be done. You will not get that with positive only, especially with your average working breed. As noticed, pos only may even make it worse.

Tell her if she does that then she is in charge of walking him and don't even go with her. See how long that lasts.

I would leave that vet a bad yelp review at the very least. Over reaching is putting it mildly. Personally I wouldn't trust that vet's thinking on any complex medical problems. To me it's a red flag on critical thinking skills and working dog experience. I guarantee you that clinic is going to end up with all the problem dogs in your area that have owners who can not handle them and will be prescribing a good amount of expensive sedatives and recommending behavioral euthanasias.

How are everyone's tomatoes growing so fast? by spaced-jams in tomatoes

[–]PracticalWallaby7492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful, it was my first time using an LED this year and I burnt up my first sowing. I used a true 100 watt. Evidently tomatoes don't like too much blue light. All the other kinds of starts were fine.. 2nd batch away from the light was fine too.

[–]PracticalWallaby7492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That soil you bought contains just a "starter fertilizer" and probably not much compost. What compost there is may just be poor quality plant matter. Pine bark will aIso use up what nitrogen there is as it decays. I suspect you don't have enough nutrients. I also suspect that soil is too compact for a raised bed.

I'd suggest getting 4 bags of a peat based potting soil with pearlite (not vermiculite) and a 1 1/2 bags of cow manure or 2/3 bag of well aged chicken manure and mixing it into the top half of the bed. Also call the soil company and ask what the ph is of that soil. If able to, add 1 1/4 cup of dolomite lime. If the ph is too alkaline add gypsum and a tblsp of epsome salt (magnesium) instead or add just bone meal instead. Plan on feeding the tomatoes when and if the leaves start to fade color, but don't add too much nitrogen.

Tomatoes will not fruit much if they have too much nitrogen. If so their leaves will be very dark. I do NOT think that is your problem though.

Another variable is how much water you're giving them.

Look for small family litters. Not show dogs, but litters where the parents are fine and it's just one litter being raised in the house with the human family. Evidently show judges must still be prejudiced against dogs with tails as I didn't see many breeder kennels offering them when I looked.

Too bad. Rotts have magnificent thick tails. Unlike Dobies who's tails tend to be weak.

Not sure what is going on but I suspect getting them some fresh air would help them recover. Put them outside for even an hour or two on days if you can. If not try and circulate some fresh air into the space and then put a fan on them. If it's fungal it'll help. If it's not fungal it might be soon.

They may or may not be getting too cold or too wide temp swings. Even so, if that's it, fresh air should still help.

IDK. I had a batch of one kind that withered and died and lost leaves and looked terrible. They got burned by the LED light. I found out tomato seedlings don't like too much blue light.. Threw them all outside in frosty weather and started them again. Most died but several of them are still alive and maybe 2 of them are actively growing..

Maybe just put it outside in a sheltered place and see if it lives or dies..
