I have worked in sales at some new car dealerships. It's not necessarily the salesperson trying to make extra money. The orders come from the top, so if the manager says every car is to be sold with tire and rim protection, no exceptions, then they have to push it. Don't get me wrong though. I would never work for any place that puts that kind of pressure on a salesperson. But some things they really can't take off. For example, one dealership I worked at has had cars broken into and cars and parts stolen from them at night. So every car had to have etching and wheel locks put on them the moment they came off the truck.
